Watched it and as stated many times before the commentary surely has an effect on peoples opinion. But it is without a doubt HBO has lots at stake in Manny's career. They make a ton of money on every one of his recent fights, so I would understand the "need" to have him keep winning.
IN boxing contracts (especially big money/world title/title eliminator fights etc..), the type of gloves used is in the contract. Maybe Floyd requested his opponents use a certain type of glove?
Probably stayed champ for at least a year, but if the stories are true, alcoholism is a very serious thing and he may have been derailed before that. He might have celebrated too much just as in defeat he wallowed too long.
tough to say at the time of the fight i though hopkins had no chance of winning
Me too. Boy I wish him and Williams would have actually made that fight. I would have been epic (as they say.)
I do admit I totally forgot he did stay champion for about 2 years afterwards. By ducking opponents (i.e. Williams) faking injuries (alcoholism) he just showed that he lost his confidence by losing to Hopkins.
Rubio was a tough guy, ask David Lemiux about that, but very limited.
Espinosa was a contender contestant who really had no business being in there with Pavlik.
Then Sergio Martinez happened and well that took a lot out of him.
I remember watching this on T.V. when it happened. I was right there with Teddy yelling all kinds of sh*t at the T.V. and judges. Ever since then I not only became an Emanuel Augustus fan, but also a Teddy Atlas fan. As many have said here before, if agree with him or not he has so much passion for this great sport. Plus I kind of like the metaphors, they crack me up sometimes.
I was just so glad that someone actually went off on air and on the officials to boot. Best part is when he tells the official that he doesn't know the rule of boxing and makes him agree to it.
He is whining, but you know what I don't care what your background is, YOU DON'T PUT HANDS ON A WOMAN. Especially in front of your kids. Don't do the crime if you can't do the time.
(BTW just for background I was poor. My family was homeless and when we did get a place to stay there was always dealers and prostitutes outside. I remember seeing people getting shot, and getting chased home by gangs in 1st grade. So I don't want to hear his whiny little @ss complain.)
No way he would be undefeated.
Let's see who would he have to fight.
Jake LaMotta
Henry Armstrong
Kid Galivan
Randy Turpin
Rocky Graziano
Gene Fullmer
Carmen Basilio
just some of the greats he fought and with as many matches between LaMotta alone he would have at least 1 loss.
"Jesse" James Lejia, the man who made a name with his series against Azumah Nelson. Drawing the 1st match, winning the 2nd to take away Nelsons belt. 3rd fight Lejia gets stopped in 6 , and in the 4th fight beat Nelson to take his belt once again.
Leija had an amateur career that spanned three years, going 23-5 during this time. He won the San Antonio Golden Gloves in 1988.
True about him having his mouth open. My remember my brother telling from a young age about how Ali's jaw got broken by Norton. The lesson I learned was to keep my mouth closed.
Probably says more about NBC than it does about Holyfield's celebrity status.
^^^ This more than anything. H*ll even my wife who never watched boxing till she had to with me knew who he was. One time I was watching an old fight on ESPN Calssic and she said "wasn't he the guy Tyson bit."
