I think he dived cause he didn’t want to be in there personally. Clay had broken him but he had to take the rematch cause he needed the money. It was a quit rather than a fix IMO.
Don't forget ...he had to go in there because the Mob wanted him to. You don't know about those Senate hearings, mainly all about the Mob controlling boxing-which it did then, but it was because of Mobbed up Liston winning the title.
I consider only Patterson an atg. I think the others were great. Their is a difference.
Patterson was a built up middleweight, and because of his speed and the fastest puncher of his time, had great success. But eventually he took a lot of punishment and slowed down. By the time he fought Liston he was done-mentally and physically.
Contrary to popular belief, his best range was not inside, it was mid-range.
Sonny Liston would not have that hard a time with Tyson.Liston would used the jab to pick off the smaller Tyson and set him up for big rights and uppercuts.Tyson's style was exactly like Floyd Patterson's (Cus trained him also) but with much more power.Sonny can take anything Tyson dishes out,and that would discourage Mike big time.A great heavyweight contender named Cleveland Williams unloaded on Sonny in the first round of their first fight, bloodying his nose and possibly breaking it.Williams had big time power like Tyson and probably the same amount of speed.Williams was also bigger than Tyson.Liston simply shook off the blows and figured Williams out, eventually knocking him out in 3 rounds.Sonny took Williams down in the 2 round in their rematch.Liston would pound the smaller Tyson around the ring and do what nobody ever did with a prime Tyson and that's dominate him.Sonny takes this in no more than 5 but probably ends this much earlier by 3rd round knockout.
Williams was a very good puncher, but SLOW...SLOW. Liston also a very good puncher and also SLOW. but faster than Wiams and also had a good straight left., Williams did not have a good chin. He was KOd 9 times in 13 losses, some by journeymen.
.........champ in a division having been involved in a lineal title fight to then immediately become the universally recognised number 1 in another division the very next bout like Hopkins did after beating Tarver???
i know sugar ray robinson tried but heat exhaustion forced him to quit. (of course super middleweight division wasnt around then but it would have been 2 weight classes if todays divisions existed then)
Henry Armstrong did it..4 weight divs at today's reckoning, also Barney Ross and very likely several others. Although not a champion, Young Stribling fought professionally at every weight from paper to heavy..
Emile Griffith ....
I thought i read that back in the day there was some fighter who would grind up steak and like drink the blood or something. Not sure who it was though or even if its remotely true
I believe that I may know who you mean. Archie Moore used to fight at heavyweight and light heavy. He was often over 200 lbs and he made a big secret out of how he would take off 20-30-40- lbs and still be able to fight a hard 15 rounds.
Eventually, after years of speculations by the boxing world he revealed his secret-at least he said that that was how he did it and still remiled strong. He would make huge steaks, and chew the mouthful until it was just pulp, spitting it out when he;d extracted all the goodness..
Please tell me you included the building of the bleachers/stadium.
WHAT IN THE FUCK............
Just think back at how unbelievably insane that sounds now.
You sound even dumber than you look. (hard to do). If you'd read or listened to what teacher was saying you'd have realized that the stadium was being proposed by MGM and being temporarily erected on their property. They told Arum about it and he passed it on to the boxing public. Because the fight was never signed, MGM decided not to bother wasting $3-4mill on a temporary structure and are instead building a permanent 20,000 seat stadium in Las Vegas in partnership with the sporting construction giant AEG. It's expected to cost $350 mil. If you can read you can see the info.
MGM has no publicity contact with boxingscene morons, so Arum was doing you droolers a favour.
Oh yes .. "Ha ha ha ...Ho ho ho.... is that enough??
Please don't be as stupid as you sound. That "penalty" was a PR piece of bumpf and Mayweather could easily make 147. And what do we poor simps know about their backroom deals which most likely was that the ridiculous "penalty" (I'd bet there was another little clause which negated it down to, say $50,000 a pound over) would make more interest in the fight....pure promotion.
I'm fed up with reading all this crap, which needs to be answered with facts and logic. Let someone else do it. A bunch of elementary school idolators.
Oh. Like 10 mil per pound want ridiculous? Difference is Floyd accepted it

Didn't Manny say he said "50-50" in response to Floyd on the phone? Ariza telling porkies.
You're mixung uo two different items I think. What he was reported to have said on the phone was that he would offer Mayweather $50 mill with the same terms. There was also a reort which said that Arum told him to offer $50 mill, which makes it possible that when Mayweather phoned Pacquiao, he (Koncz or another flunkey) got Arum on anpother phone and was holding both phones close to him ...depending on how spontaneous his rejoinder offer was. He may have said "let me think this over for a minute" and then got right onto the Arum phone.....
Who really knows what is what in boxing these days......not me.
This fight was made back in 2009 except for one thing:
Olympic style Random Drug Testing. One side wanted it and one did not. This will always be the legacy of this non-fight.
Olympic style drug testing is YEAR ROUND..not for the 8 weeks or so which Mayweather was talking about. Mayweather would never do genuine Olympic style testing because he has been strongly reported to be dirty himself. He wanted the testing from a time when he would be clean, and also banked on MannyP's supersitions to cause the problems.
You all seem to forget that Pacquiao was the A side in that original attempt to make the fight and for Mayweather to try to take over the negotiations and insert extra conditions after everything had been virtually settled, was a clear violation of the negotiating positions. and a ploy to derail the fight.
You guys don't even know recent boxig history, and believe everything that comes from your favourite side.
You're a worthless Pac troll. Almost every single thing you said in your post is meant to mislead and reinvent the facts.
In 2009 Pac and Floyd were a total 50/50 draw and they were both the "A side" of the fight. In fact, Maywearhers name was going to be listed first - "Mayweather vs. Pacquiao" - plus Mayweather was going to walk to the ring last.
Secondly, everybody knows Floyd is clean. If you Google "Mayweather and steroids" nothing comes up but Pacquiaos name.
Keep on trolling, brother.
I'm not an anything troll. Every single thing I have mentioned was reported in THIS site. Except for the Thomas Hauser articles about Mayeblather's 3 failed A tests, which he investigated exhaustively and reported on Maxboxing....PLUS Golden Balls cushy testing "reporting" arrangment they had with the testing laboratory...
You are trying to sound as stupid as you write. I care nothing about either Mayweather or Pacquiao, But the ridiculous claims and comments on this site by illiterate or semi-i 's just need to be redressed with FACTS. You see, simpo, I remember what I have read for almost ever, and read every report I find interesting. And the Mayflower-Pacquiao was very interesting at that period.
And they were NOT equally famous, MannyP was (and still is) a world wide icon, sought after by loads of top companies for endorsements, whilst Mayweather was equally (about) well known in the US and maybe Britain only, but almost unknown in the rest of the world..... Simpo...... Pacquiao was originally expecting more than 50%. You need to just sit down, take a deep breath(hold it for 15 minutes) and dispassionately examine the FACTS as I have detailed......if you have the mentality for it.....
And, as for nothing coming up but Pacquiao's name when you "google" meaning I suppose Wikipaedia.... That was the major reason why Mayflower and company had to pay untold (the financial details were kept confidential-according to BoxingScene) multi-millions to Pacquiao when they suddenly crumpled and paid up........after receiving a court order to produce Phoney Phliyd's medical records for his past 8 fights....... Schlemiel. ... DUMBO (10 degrees worde than simpo).
"You shudda stood in bed....." (if you know that quote which you probably don't).,,,,,
Third because Carl beat him up in sparring, and then stopped him in the last fight.
British people boo Froch because for some odd reason we seem to dislike fighters who are successful & perceived as arrogant. Most true boxing fans appreciate the warrior that is Carl Froch, however the football loving casuals are swayed by idiots like Groves who has never actually achieved anything in the ring.
He's Jewish and there's a much growing of anti-semitism in the UK.
Since when is froch jewish? He is half polish according to his biography. It says his grandfather left poland so he wouldn't be recruited into the german army. Jews weren't forced into the german army, they got sent to camps.
You mean that that were sent to slave labour camps and crematoria.......
Bull****. How many knowes Froach is jewish anyway? I didnt know before you said it.
I suppose you are 95% of the British boxing fans..... Regardless of what you believe, or say, the facts are there. He's one of the "despised people", and there is an enormous swell in Jew hatred in Britain, has been for many years. I;m sure they know everything to be known about Froch. In Europe alone over half of our people will not dare any more to go in public wearing any Jewish symbol-like a kippa for instance.
You can't brush away facts by showing ignorance or indifference. And I'm not talking about the dodos on this site...only.
He is not jewish, his nose just looks that way from boxing a long time.
What has his nose got to do with anything. You are falling into the familiar bigoted stereotyping. Could you tell the facial difference between a Greek, a Sicilian, a stereotye Jew, a southern Spaniard, a Frenchman, a Maltese, a Turk, and generally any of the whole Mediterranean Basin population, not forgetting Arabs, Afghanis etc etc....
The biggest nose I ever saw was on a Mixed race South African Plymouth Brother, a close relative of my wife.
You pretty much answered it there. Just like Tito knocking out some decent WWs and Jr. Middles.
Trinidad had about 15 defences of his title mostly or all by KO. Which means that, since he beat ssome very good unbeated fighers, in his time, he was unbeatable.
Did you see them when Merchant mention Hopkins? Dude was like no and his manager No!!! Then Merchant says is the weight negotiable? "No, not a chance" hahahaha what a bunch of hypocrites.
No excuse, Hopkins is a very customer to fight. Be prepared for butts, low blows, lacings, holding and hitting, rabbit punching and bad breath. Martinez doesn'[t feel he needs to take that as well as perhaps a 15 lb weight difference. And if he gets on top, you can be sure that Hopkins will be faking a low blow to get the refs call for a point or even a DQ.
Who wants; to go through all that rubbish. And he wouldn't be a big money , except against a Canadian.
I really dont see floyd dissing many fighters. he actually tells it like it is. no dis to corrales
either.
he dissed gatti,
That's not exactly so, amongst his nasty comments, he announced that he was going to beat Corrales to avenge all the beaten wives, since he knew that Corrales was heading for gaol. A month or so later he himself was up on charges of beating up his girl-friend,or wife or whatever she was.
Nothing "wow" about that...Winky was a beast in his prime.
You obviously never saw him in his "prime". He was most noted for his defence and his lack of KO power.
Shane was lightning fast with power and he would have taken Floyd in his prime!!!! Both Oscar and Shane take Floyd!!!
This is what I believe. Both had excellent chins and would have backed Mayweather up all night. And they were both as fast as Mayweather, Mosley actually the fastest of the three both hands and feet. And heavy punchers throwing excellent combinations.
LOL @ the Tito talk. Trinidad was no beast at all, now what? Done? Cool. Because, if you really want to compare Tito and Mosley resume we can. But, I doubt you want to do that.
So lets get back to the subject, shall we? Mosley is a HOF'er no doubt. But, Mosley wasn't highly regarded prior to the first Oscar fight and that's my point. It was seen as Oscar cherry picking Mosley who hadn't look spectacular since he jumped from LW skipping JWW. Mosley was considered smaller. And, it was seen as a pretty big upset at that time when Mosley beat Oscar.
There had always been a local rivalry between them and Mosley was irritated at the excessive praise that Oscar generated. He was determined to beat him, and he actually won that fight at least 116-112 or better. The split was a farce.
Because you dont wipe your opponent when touching gloves! Everyone boxer knows what a proper touch gloves is. For hundreds of years boxers have known it.
And on top of that, there is that little rule about stepping BACK (at east) ONE PACE. And for all the "protect yourself at all times" lovers, there ia also the instruction "Obey my commands at all times", and it's still being debated, by the more imtelligent posters as to whether Cortez gave permission to resume boxing or wheter his "let's go" was to the timekeeper which of course should be first BEFORE action is resumed. On top of all this mess, Cortez is supposed to make sure that when boxing is resumed, BOTH fighters must go to neutral corners not just one fighter.
Just my opinion.
So whilst it was cheap shot, for many reasons, the real cause was Cortez being so lax with his control in the ring, and Mayweather's nasty "win-at-all-costs attitude. If he had retaliated immediately after the head butt, I could have understood and even accepted that, but to do so after Ortiz had been properly penalised, and they were coming toogether in a supposedly sporting event to resume action, it was below cheap to deliberately engineer to take Ortiz by surprise in such a deceitful way.
Why complain about a refund you got to see 3 good fights and the main event was good while it lasted so why complain? You freankin pactards piss me off
I don't think that they were good fights, they were very average and certainly not championship calibre. Alvarez was very passive only defensively active, and I was shocked to see how Morales has deteriorated, he was bad and I believe he'll lose in his first defence if he fights anyone half-decent. Alphonso Gomez gave it a good try but he was just not up to the neccessary level to make it a decent fight. That he was able to mount so many attacks shows the weakness of the champion.
Maybe the matchups were just not right and they'd all fight better against other opponents.
Maybe.....
Someone did, Dumbquiao hired a company called VisionQwest. That's where I got the 26 million from. That's why everyone in the Philippines(fans and media alike) are shocked and asking Dumbquiao where all his $$$ went.
I mean, it's not a secret PAC is a big spender/gambler. But, if he's supposedly getting all this guaranteed $$$ from all his fights he should have more in his account(s)
Didn't Forbes fairly recently report that he was one of the highest earning athletes in the world last year earning over $60 mill. Apart from boxing he has videos, music, endorsements, etc.
We don't really know what is behind his hiring independent accountants to check his figures or earnings or whatever the reporters are concocting. Didn't he fire them after a week and they are now suing him because of it??
If hes not a Golden Boy fighter,
why do they pay for him, promote for him and have all of their logos and banners everywhere in sight when he fights?
His "promotion" company does not, or certainly did not have a promoter's licence, according to the Nevada State Commission he never has applied for one. So when he fights, being the main attraction and wanting to make the most money, and dictate the terms, he hires Golden Balls to do all the promoting, which is a huge job, needing a big organisation to do it properly. And he went to Oscar because he parted with Arum on bad terms, as did Oscar. Childish.....
When exactly was Ali knocked unconscious bro? He had to retire in his penultimate fight before official retirement but he was NEVER knocked clean out!
Floyd cheated against Ortiz aswell and who did Ali cheat against that were '3 weight classes' below him???
Heavyweights are all the same weight class you know, if they are 15 stone or 22 stone! I don't hear many people standing up for David Haye who was much smaller and about 3 stone less than Wlad....
I think what he's referring to is the KD by Henry Cooper, which it's rumoured that the bell saved Ali who otherwise wouldn't have been able to get up in time. Also he is supposed to have gained time by his corner deliberately enlarging a small ear in the glove.
Well, I saw the fight on TV at the time, and also have seen it on video several times since. In my opinion he could have beaten the count, although he might have been KD again, or even KO'd. The bell ended that speculation. As for the torn glove gaining him much extra time, well....unless they faked the film and the later videos, there was only a delay of a few seconds.
So it's all pure speculation. Ali showed he had a very good chin, all through his career.
not sure, but the ayala one in real time is bad ass :D
@ 6:26
Ayala had lots of determination but wasn't very good. He got three undeserved wins against Tapia, Dianzo and Adams. And he was too small to fight Morales and Barrera.
probably because he knows he was b****ting and he will see pac in court soon
Exacty right. I believe this also. What he's trying to do, even at this late date its to create "evidence on the ground" which he thhinks he can use in court to show that it was all a joke and he never intended to degrade MannyP.
I think he's too late for this, although Oscar succeeded, but there was probably a big settlement there, as well as the tiny share of Pacquiao which he had.
To put it simply, Howard Cosell was every bit as critical and opinionated as Larry Merchant yet Ali actually befriended him while Mayweather certainly has not. If you know how to deal with the media, you can make it far easier on yourself.
As for styles, there is very little comparison.
It was actually the other way around. Cosell befriended Ali, sttod up for him and constantly gave his "unasked" opinion as to his rights and defended him all the way. Ali was only a confused semi-cretinous kid campared to Cosell, who was a highly literate and very well educated very opinionated, stubborn man.
I remember when Wilson was the talk of the day after his devastating KO of Emmanuel Nwodo. Those days seem long gone now.
I'm guessing Gomez will get a title shot at some point as long as he keeps beating these type of opponents he is facing. Not the most honourable way of getting a title shot, but it works.
He was lucky. He is only a wild swinging brawler, more like a tough bar fighter than a schooled boxer. Pretty useless in my opinion, and not nice to watch.
