I was watching Mayweather last week in the ring and afterwards,” said Big Steve while hitting a heavy bag at the Y in Glendale:” And I can’t help but to compare him to Muhammad Ali. They are both as fast as greased lightening and they both talk a lot of smack… What do you think?”
Let’s start with the speed. Muhammad Ali was one of a kind heavyweight with a lightning fast speed in both, his hands and his feet. He glided around the ring and befuddled opponents with movement that was as quick as any welterweight fighter.
“I'm so fast that last night I turned off the light switch in my hotel room and was in bed before the room was dark,” said Muhammad Ali.
Welterweight Floyd Mayweather Jr is faster. He claims that whoever you put in front of him:” They can’t beat me.”
“Floyd Mayweather’s mouth moves fast, but his punches keep up with it and round out his attack,” wrote a columnist Kyle Skov in his recent prediction of Mayweather Ortiz fight. But it is not just his speed, but a pin point accurate punching and subtle movement that have opponents confused in the ring. Floyd says he is the greatest fighter ever.
Muhammad Ali used to say:” I am the greatest; I said that even before I knew I was.”
Both men boast quite a bit about themselves and believe that they are a special gift to sweet science. Both men have offended people. However aside from really hurting Joe Frazier, Muhammad Ali had a lot of fun trash talking and asserted himself as a media darling predicting fights and having verbal duels with legendary Howard Cosell. Floyd Mayweather’s sharp tongue spares no one. He has not been able to endear himself to media and has a huge chip on his shoulder about not getting his just due from reporters; thus his recent blow out with veteran color commentator, Larry Merchant.
Are they bragging? “It's not bragging if you can back it up,” said Muhammad Ali. Both men can definitely back it up in the ring. However this is where parallels end between those two. Muhammad Ali became larger than life when he refused to fight a war that he did not believe in and went to prison while standing up for his rights. Floyd Mayweather believes he is larger than life because he is his own boss and takes one hundred percent of the revenues, thus a new handle, Money Mayweather.
But the biggest difference between Floyd Mayweather and Muhammad Ali is the quality of the opposition. Ali fought all the best heavyweights of his era and his destruction of undefeated George Forman in Africa became the stuff legends are made off. However every great champion needs some body to take him to the absolute limit of courage and human endurance. In that regard Ali’s name is forever intertwined with Joe Frazier.
Floyd Mayweather has fought all the best fighters of his era, but he has been constantly accused of picking the right opponents at the right time, but more than that, Floyd does not have a Frasier to test his limits. Or does he?
Muhammad Ali once said:”He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life.”
Would Floyd Mayweather have enough courage to face his Frasier whose name is Manny Pacquiao ?
I think what he's referring to is the KD by Henry Cooper, which it's rumoured that the bell saved Ali who otherwise wouldn't have been able to get up in time. Also he is supposed to have gained time by his corner deliberately enlarging a small ear in the glove.
Well, I saw the fight on TV at the time, and also have seen it on video several times since. In my opinion he could have beaten the count, although he might have been KD again, or even KO'd. The bell ended that speculation. As for the torn glove gaining him much extra time, well....unless they faked the film and the later videos, there was only a delay of a few seconds.
So it's all pure speculation. Ali showed he had a very good chin, all through his career.
Ali used illegal smelling salts in that fight. hes a cheater and a scumbag. Not to mention all of his controversial decisions, 2 against Norton, Shavers, Young, Jones etc...
And people saying Ali wouldnt have demanded steroid testing? Why didnt he give Foreman a rematch? Why did he force Foreman to fight outdoors in the middle of a jungle? The guy did tons of trash in his career. Imagine Floyd giving a fight to a 6-0-1 fighter. How brave is it to hang on the ropes an entire fight? HOw about when he gave shots to evangelista and wepner...what a freaking joke Ali was. Do not compare him to Floyd.
floyd doesn't compare to ali. if there is one heavyweight he reminds me of, its jack johnson. from the class of fighter to the infamy he seems to conjure up. jack was much more of a bad ass though.
And also a better fighter!
When exactly was Ali knocked unconscious bro? He had to retire in his penultimate fight before official retirement but he was NEVER knocked clean out!
Floyd cheated against Ortiz aswell and who did Ali cheat against that were '3 weight classes' below him???
Heavyweights are all the same weight class you know, if they are 15 stone or 22 stone! I don't hear many people standing up for David Haye who was much smaller and about 3 stone less than Wlad....

What an ABSOLUTE JOKE of a thread and a comment.Floyds name shouldn't b in the same sentence as Ali's!
Ali had b*ll*cks and fought with 3 ATG's in Joe Frazier 3 times, George Foreman and Larry Holmes
He lost 5 times yes, twice after retirement(once to ATG Larry Holmes), never got KO'd, a split to Ken Norton and Leon Spinks the year before retirement and once to Joe Frazier!
Lets see 'bigman' Floyd get in the ring with possible ATG Manny Pacquiao and maybe he'd deserve his ATG status....
Maybe if he had fought Mosley, Cotto and Margarito in their prime he'd have more respect but he ducked them all. Even if he lost, at least he had balls and got in the ring with them.... It will be a boxing tragedy if he doesn't fight Manny!
right on the button...
ali is thousand miles away to floyd...
in and out of the ring
To put it simply, Howard Cosell was every bit as critical and opinionated as Larry Merchant yet Ali actually befriended him while Mayweather certainly has not. If you know how to deal with the media, you can make it far easier on yourself.
As for styles, there is very little comparison.
It was actually the other way around. Cosell befriended Ali, sttod up for him and constantly gave his "unasked" opinion as to his rights and defended him all the way. Ali was only a confused semi-cretinous kid campared to Cosell, who was a highly literate and very well educated very opinionated, stubborn man.
IMO Floyd's the G.O.A.T...It's about the skills(the best I've ever seen from past and present), He's the most complete fighter ever:
Speed, quickness, balance, ring IQ, decent power, extremely sharp and accurate punching, master of defense, and excellent counters!
But the MAIN REASON I believe he's the greatest of all is because of what he brings to the sport! No he's not bigger than boxing, but he's BIG for boxing. Whether you want to see him win, or you want to see him lose...YOU'LL WANT TO SEE HIM! Floyd Mayweather brings such an attraction even with that " Bad Guy " image!
U have to judge a fighter on his competition. Floyd is lacking in that department. He has the chance to face the best thats out there, but he chooses not to.
I personally thinks he beats everyone. But i wish he would fight his nearest p4p rivals.
Ali wasnt liked because of his political views.
Floyd isnt liked because he's an as.shole.
Ali was loved because of his sense of humor, and the fact he took on fighters who people think he couldnt beat.
Floyd isnt loved. Only his skills are appreciated by boxing fans.

Except that inside, Cosell loved Ali. Deep inside Merchant, he wants to see Mayweather hanging from a tree.
A little bit different IMO, but what do I know.
This would have been the same had Cosell and Merchant changed places. In fact Merchant was a big fan of Ali and scored the Ali-Frazier I fight for Ali. Cosell would have ripped into Mayweather most likely. He was rough on a lot of people and not many liked him.
Stylistically I'd compare Mayweather to this man:
George Benton vs Bobby Boyd by TheGreatA
The great George Benton passed away recently.
Except that inside, Cosell loved Ali. Deep inside Merchant, he wants to see Mayweather hanging from a tree.
A little bit different IMO, but what do I know.
so you've done an autopsy on both?

Ali was knocked unconscious and forced to cheat against guys 3 weight classes below him. Ali also lost 5 times and Floyd has never lost. Never...Ever...disrespect Floyd by comparing him to that piece of human refuse muhammad ali.
HAHAHAHAHA LOL at this pathetic klit licker who has the nerve to play-down Ali. Wladimir *****sko got KTFO BY A ****ING BUM CORRIE SANDERS !!!! HAHAHAHA LOL and got SPARKED BY A BUM IN LAMONT BREWSTER!!! :bottle::bottle::bottle:
And btw Muhammed Ali >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Floyd Mayweather. Don't ever compare.

Ali wouldnt ask Pacquiao for a PED test...he would go in the ring with him and smack the **** out of him cause he knew he is the greatest...and if he would lose he wouldnt care about it and would train harder for the rematch and then would smack his ass...he was confident about himself...not like Floyd...Floyd is maybe the most talented boxers ever but he isnt confident...he says he is the best bla bla but he dont really believe it cause if yes he would have fights with Cotto, Margarito etc...
