Ali would school him on boxing methods! Lennox would look awkward trying to deal with the great laterial movement from a "prime" Ali! Ali on the move and going in & out with combination Lennox has NEVER witnessed would be to much for a young Lewis! The Greatest against a Good just doesn't add up to Lewis dealing with Ali! Ali by distance and if Lennox pushed trying to pressure he'd get stopped! To many folks here watch an old Ali on video in the prime years he had ALL the punches flowing and the best chin EVER in the heavy division. Ray.
The thread is old the fight was almost 10 years ago who cares it was an amateur fight against a quality opponent! He got caught against a southpaw moving away from his right hand and got beat by a counter left. We move on.......:boxing:
Ray
Young Scully how are you? This is Ray Corso the original trainer from Ring One in Hamden Conn. I had Ray Bright, Martin "Ike" Williams in the abf and Felix Marquez and Wilfredo Franco in the pros. Do you remember the "Hamden Hammer" Kenny Schmidt hahahaha and Jerry "Whimpy" Halstead? I remember you John when you started with Mac, and kept tabs on you through your boxing career. I hope your well and happy too, best to you.
I handled Mike for Cus at the JO Nationals (first year Colo Springs Oly. Center) and a few other shows I think the old man wanted me to keep an eye on Teddy more than the kid hahahaha!! Ray.
I only know this young man by his performance against Khan and showed alot of determination but not alot of skills. I do believe when Mannys skills go their going quickly and with the smaller guys which he was they don't go long as far as longevity. Hes done a great job as far as conditioning and more important is his mental strength. I think Manny should win going the distance but if this young man is not prepared and doesn't come to the ring to compete Manny will stop him. I think a Bradley win would be a huge upset! If I watch I hope its a quality bout and both are safe! Ray
i think Freedie is refering to "high" peak muscle that when filled with blood can tighten up and a boxer can loose some flexibilty. The type of muscle can be important on a fighters build. If Tim added size to his arms there is a chance of tightness as fatique begins. The old saying about a bodybuilders body not being prefered for a boxer shape has some merit. Kenny Norton had high peak muscle and it did effect him as his career developed. It may not bother Tim at all but since its new size at a new weight it can effect him. Ray.
.........hopefully not!
I agree with George 100% but I also give some credit to Wlad because he's done a good job protecting a questionable chin. I do believe that a challeger must "take" a title but the champ must be "fighting" in defense of it too!!
As to any of the current heavies none would do very well back Louis's era and none would fare well in the early 60s thru the late 70s!! 'None of these challengers can punch and Wlad does have good power in his right but he doesn't take good shots either. Ali and Holmes and plenty of others could give and take and I don't see that in the Klitz Bros.
It sure would be better if either of them had personalities and chins atleast they'd be interesting in and out of the ring. Their fights are boring because their opponents have to supply the excitment but none of them can fight!!
Its not the Bros. fault that the comp stinks but they're not exciting either!
Ray.
Theres far to many fans that credit losses as a deminish to someones talents and abilities. Cotto was defeated by a man and trainer who use the most hanis means to hurt someone by "loading" gloves. He took a hell of a beaten then with a returned bout won easily! Being defeated by Pacman is by no means a slight to his record, Manny is the best fighter who uses boxing skills in the game today and has been defeating all comers with the same fighter/boxer style for years now. Cotto has proven himself as a competitor who trains hard and has a will to win. Stop counting wins and losses and try to understand a fighters will and desire to win. Very few fight to an undefeated mark and if they do it doesn't mean they fought the toughest competition however it means they beat they everyone "someone" (Promotor or selfpromotor) put in front of them. Hope its a great fight! Ray
If Floyd takes the lead by controling the center of the ring by the 4 or 5th round he will have an easier fight with Cottos style. You back up a style like Cottos because he looses his ability to punch backing up. If he can't turn out after a step back he'll get stopped if Floyd wants to push the fight. I don't know Cottos will, I've seen him only twice and he reminds me of a light hitting Pepino Cuevas. Seems to be a southpaw converted and they struggle backing away as most fighters do.
I guess I'll see what Cottos made of regardless of victory or defeat, either way he needs to take advantage of the marketing opportunity in his biggest fight. My guess is that Floyd wins by KO if he works for it or settles on a distance win. Ray
Box you need to look into my archives on this forum as to my past in the sport!
I opened my gym in 1969-70 and it remains open to this day run by one of the young men who I trained in the mid 80's.
I'm a former Region 1 USA/ABF coach and coached at the Olympic Training Center in Colo. Springs with Pat Nappi and many others.
I have trained state, regional and national champions and have worked with and against world boxing pro champions.
My opinions on based on actual experiences working in the sport not reading forums.
Tyson Fury is a green very inexperienced boxer who prefers to talk big as opposed to fight big.
His claim to fame is that he is a 6'8" who can actually move around a ring without stumbling. Lets wait and see him navigate some pressure and come off the ground to dominate before we anoint him a great boxer.
He beat a 40 year old old man who didn't want to engage because he was used to bums coming to him.
By bums I mean men who don't give max efforts!
good luck with your on line "sparring"! :boxing:
Ray
Who's the "elite warrior" Wlad? Seriously, an elite warrior hahahahaha......
Try to understand the history of Louis, the bum of the month era came after he took the title, beat the top contenders and then took on anyone!
You see back then a great fighter had to produce at "live shows" not sell ppv
to fans who are so gullible they buy into a clown like Fury. If Fury fought like he did against Wlad back in Louis's era he would have been booed out of the building!
Ray
Right now Canelo has better head and upper body moves than any of the above mentioned boxers. He has improved alot since the Floyd fight and is beginning to evolve into a productive counter move/counter punch fighter. He made Cotto miss at close range and Cotto is an experienced veteran in these times.
I think you'd see Kell moving after Canelo because he'd have height and reach.
I don't think Canelo likes to take the lead and prefers to sit off and counter.
In regards to GGG if his opponents can't get his respect their screwed!
However if they can land with decent accuracy and regularity he will swell up on his face. He has high check bones and his skin looks taunt. I'm not sure Abel is set up for cuts, his ice man doesn't not apply pressure for a few seconds and you need to do that as soon as inflammation begins.
If you can back him up things will change dramatically!!!! :boxing:
Ray
GGG fights at 171-72lbs. Taking on a legit light heavy would be giving away
15 to 20 pounds (weighin 175 re hydrate 188-93) come bell time.
If he is at his best fighting weight at 172 there is no way he can move to light heavy and be a legit light heavy.
If there were same day weigh ins the light heavy might only get to re hydrate
up 10-12 instead of 15-20 and that would be a more legit difference.
Personally if he gets all the 160 belts I think he moves up to challenge anyone.
However he is already slowing down, I see it in his steps and in his over all reactions. The hundreds of amateur bouts and hundreds od spar rounds and his pro career can sneak up quickly. I don't see his reactions after he punches to be as sharp as they were just 3 fights ago. The legs go first!!!!
Ray
Junior welter who hasn't fought in a year and is 3w 2l in his last 5 fights?
He has a 44% ko rate and is a SAFE opponent. Total waste of time!
Cotto go home, you made great money it's time to ride off in the sun set.
Bernard, Jones, Mosley, Mayweather, Pacman all of these guys your time is OVER!
Ray
Roman Gonzalez.....he pressures from a boxers stance. Boxes as he pressures, uses two hands to attack, has upper body movement and ring generalship.
He's moving from 106 to 112 to 115 superfly!
Had an amateur record of 88-0 and as a pro is 45-0 with 38 KO wins!
To me he is the most complete boxer on the scene right now who incorporates
boxing skills and true boxing form with pressure style and a two handed attack working in combinations. Rarely seen these days!
Ray
You talk about Scmelling and Walcott as if they were fringe competitors.
That alone tells me your just a Fury Fanboy!
He lost to Max when he was coming up in contention. You really need to watch that fight so you can get an understanding of willingness and desire! Louis took tremendous punishment from Max and still kept trying to succeed. His heart was huge and he learned Max's lesson.
What happe3ns to these "oversized" men once a real fighter slips inside them?
What happens against a puncher who WILL punch once they get close?
We know Wlad was taught to tie up because he has no skills inside, Fury will be chopped meat with a real puncher because he has NO Power! He pronates nothing and he's an arm puncher. If Wlad gives everything he has for 5 solid rounds Fury will be gone unless Wlads chin is even worse than I think it is!
There is nothing Fury does thats better than Louis, NOTHING! He's tall!
Ray
Yes I think the "mixed race" fighters are "better"!
Especially the ones from the 100 yd dash and the Mile Run (1500m).
I also favor the Daytona 500 and Isle of Man combinations because of fearlessness and athletic abilities, don't you?
..this place is going to hell........babysitting daily......:bottle:
Ray
Tyson Fury doesn't belong in the same sentence with Joe Louis!
If you can't see the differences in the skill level of these men you need to take up watching bowling! Even that might have to much technique for you to grasp,
and by "you" I mean any one who compares a Tyson Fury to a Joe Louis.
Fury does NOTHING better than hit himself compared to Louis.
Louis will be a top five heavy for many more years and Fury along with his "best" win will be forgotten very soon!
Ray
box...."I don't mean as in different rules. I mean that modern fighters are trained to react to certain changes in an opponents stance and so on a lot better. Back then many people who fought a certain opponent would have been surprised by a change in tactics as everything was new back then, and they would go away and think about how to counter it for months. It was like the beginning stages of the evolution of specific styles back then. It is much more refined now which may be why you don't see the same level of versatility in today's fighters. They would have been doing things that they didn't realise were not optimal for the primary styles they were using and so on."
Doesn't get any more full of crap than this dribble :lame:
This is a boxing forum that will counter garbage like this quickly, stop insulting
"former boxers" and exposing yourself as a BS'er! Absolute garbage...:trink26:
Ray
Reminded me of Mayweather vs Oscar when Oscar took his foot off the pedal as the drive ended.
My preference is usually with the aggressor if he makes the opponent engage but Ward did a nice job as the fight moved on.
I can see both sides but does it really make a difference who won?
They need each other to earn so big deal! They should fight a different opponent in May or June and come back against each other in Nov.
Then when Koval wins a decs. they could finish it out in March.
Who do these guys have out there to make any real money with.
Stevenson? OK add him in the mix and stretch the calendar out.
Two cheap promoters who have no one in the wings to take over for these guys, think about that!
Ray
His standards aren't high he doesn't know what he's talking about.
To talk about Vito as if he's a walk in the park is a joke!
To put someone down to try and raise your favorite up shows me the person who does that has no real knowledge of the sport and the history of the sport.
Hagler has one of the best records at 160 and the men on that record are some of the best contenders in any era.
Seales (3)
Watts (2)
Monroe (3)
Colbert
Finnigan (2)
Geraldo
Minter
Obelmejias
Hamsho (2)
Lee
Sibson
Scyprion
Duran
Rolden
Hearns
Magumbi
Leonard
The men on Haglers record are far superior to the men GGG has fought to date. It's not even close! 67 bouts 52 via KO/tko and has NEVER been stopped!
I like GGG a lot but he is NOT on Haglers turf yet by any means. The skill level is far apart and without the punch GGG would be an average talent.
I know he can box much better than his showing last week and will have to in his future fights or he will get beat! He will puff up, and I believe he will cut too. I believe his heart is intact but will his power last through 10 full rounds of a testing fight?
We know Hagler did!
Ray
Theres a lot more going on than size sonny! If you study the game and learn Methods & Techniques over measure some guys height and weight you could have a better source to evaluate skills.
Babe Ruth pitches in the World Series in the early 1920's and still hold World Series records for it!
You probably didn't even know he started out as a pitcher to begin with, did ya!
Ray
First off the "Cobra" was welter champ Donald Curry!
Second off if GGG fought Froch (the worst jab I've ever seen) why do you think he would repeat what he did against Kell? Did he fight that way in any other bout? What I've seen in Froch is a guy who is open "all the time for everything"! He had his chance to sign against Tripe G and declined!
All of these Brits and Euro fighters know this Tripe G guy very well. For many many years they've followed him through his amateur career and none of them have been in line to take him on! Those are the FACTS!
I don't thin k he's a great fighter but I know he can punch and in todays boxing era there are very few if ANY punchers! Boxers respect punchers and would just as soon move on from them. And they do.........
Ray
Wlad-Lennox Lewis-at heavyweight.........Lennox by KO inside 6
GGG-Hagler -at middleweight...right now from what I see Hagler by tko late
Lomachenko-Mayeather-130.....interesting early but Floyd takes over late decs.
Ray Seales was an Olympic Gold Medalists and top ten contender!
Trained Joe Clough, National Champion in the AAU in the Gloves & AAU
Ray Seales a BUM really why not study up sonny!
Vito Antuofermo is one of toughest SOB ever in the sport, no one wanted to fight this guy and if you did you'd better be ready for a war!
He was Gatti & Ward long before them, he was LaMotta and Armstrong coming to you all night long! The guy was 5'6" at 160 and a ****ing animal!
Watts & Monroe were top ten contenders that Hagler had to face, both excallant competitors. Hagler turned the losses into wins the next time around. Stopping both of them!!!
Sonny a BUM is someone who doesn't fight up to their abilities!
I have no idea what you think the word means but you use it incorrectly!
Ray
