True that happens sometimes, just like in boxing when one guy gasses and gets stopped..
But the real skill is when you can put on a choke when your getting beat or in a rough fight,, silva popping that triangle on sonnen, or when big nog was getting beat by Sylvia and he caught him in a choke... Jon jones choking out machida..
Werdum catching fedor in a triangle..
Watch the old school Nick diaz vs takanori Gomi fight from 2006ish in pride,, incredible fight and incredible choke to end..
Shinya aoki has out of this world chokes..
Royce Gracie vs Dan Severn way back in the day, another good example
Not only that but, like boxing, things like movement, positioning, and technique are things that have to be learned over a long and consistent period of time spent training. You can teach anyone to throw a left hook, a right straight, or an armbar, but without the ability to move into position, set up the attack, and understand when and where it can be properly applied, it's useless. I mean, there's always the chance of just jumping into it and landing it, but to efficiently apply those techniques, I think everything else has to be learned to supplement it. I always compare grappling to boxing, in the sense that the average joe can understand a KO punch or a chokehold, but when things get technical and slower (Jake Shields, GSP, Mayweather, Rigondeaux) those same people start *****ing and moaning about how "boring" it is. And they're not always wrong because that **** can definitely get real boring, but I think it takes a certain amount of education to better appreciate the minor details.
