Segura is the eighth-ranked pound-for-pound fighter by The Ring Magazine.
Uh, no he's not (unless Segura is short for Pongsaklek Wonjongkam in which case I'm terribly sorry and I made a mistake (but probably not)).
Look at who he's facing
A come forward slugger was actually in an even fight simply boxing with Martinez thru 10 rounds
He has faced 3 str8 European caliber fighters in a row
Im a Sergio fan but when a guy who has never actually tried to box actually has success boxing with you, theres a problem
Macklin is literally the highest MW available for a fight (at least according to the Ring). He's the unofficial champ after beating Sturm. Who would you rather have him fight?
At this point, Martinez is cleaning house waiting for a big pay day.
Every single fight he is in, they keep saying he is "exposed". And during the fights, they always say how he isn't looking like a middleweight champ. Yet in every single fight, he knocks the guy out in the end and destroys fighters towards the end. Someone explain to me, wtf is HBO's problem with Martinez?
For starters, he took two american superstars out of the big scene with his upsets.
To make things worse, he is after another big name (and all smoke), Chavez Jr. They can't wait to see Martinez decline.
How can they be afraid to fight if that is their profession and they do it for a living? Im guessing you mean Mayweather from your post...correct me if im wrong and i apologise if i do but that man has fought 42 fights in his professional career and countless fights in his amateur days. How can he be afraid to fight?
And every man, every fighter in the world is afraid for his health! That is just natural for a human being. Sure no fighter will tell you that whilst he is fighting but you must be really naive if you think that any fighter out their is not afraid for his health.
Mike Tyson, one of the most intimidating men on the planet when he was fighting has come out and said after his retirement that underneath that vicious look of his, he was scared himself. So is every fighter though deep down, but that is only natural.
It's perfectly understandable that boxers fear for their health. You're not a coward if you fear for you're health. You're a coward if you're afraid to lose.
If doing well against Felix Sturm is an indicator of being a credible opponent then I guess Martin Murray is next.
Murray's performance against Sturm was worlds apart from Macklin's. I saw the fight and he was gifted a draw. I thought it was particularly strange that they favored the challenger this time.
I'll go on record in saying that Murray is not a legit contender and doesn't deserve a title shot with any belt holder at 160.
Mayweather vs. Martinez simply because I feel it's the most competitive. After the Marquez fight, I have no reason to believe that Pacquiao can beat Floyd. Marquez is stylistically a problem for Pacquiao and Floyd is in many ways a better version of that.
The biggest problem I see with this tournament is that Martinez is already recognized as the king in the division. Why would he lock himself into 4 fights to prove his on top? He'd be 40 by the end of it.
If you take him out of the equation the tourny looks good. The belt holders are holding the title's hostage and are reluctant to taking any risks. It'd be a nice alternative to get them to fight. I would cut the number of fighters to 8.
Because Macklin isn't the one being showcased. It was Sergio's decision to fight such a lacklustre opponent and thus he is under more scrutiny to perform.
Macklin is a lackluster opponent? Didn't you hear about the robbery in Germany? Which opponent is more solid at 160 than Macklin? I thought Macklin was a legit opponent coming into the fight. Macklin is no Barker IMO.
The way I see it, Khan already beat him once, so he can do it again. I'm sure he'll come in prepared for Peterson's strategy. There won't be any funny business from the ref this time around.

in before "he's not that black"
So you're argument against the OP is that it's biologically impossible for black skin to be less propense to cutting because this guy has a swollen forehead? What the hell does the skin toughness have to do with swelling anyway?
You can't have a Puerto Rican figher, a Puerto Rican ref, Puerto Rican judges in Puerto Rico and expect it to be fair game (this goes for all nationalities of course).
It's the sanctioning bodies fault that these things happen. There's not a sport I can think of were the people in charge of regulating the sport are doing whatever the hell the promoting companies and boxers want.
Imagine if in the World Cup Soccer finals between Spain and the Netherlands they had a Spanish ref? Or, imagine if the Netherlands had so much influence on FIFA that they decided they didn't want to play the World Cup finals with Spain and instead preferred Uruguay. What kind of sport is that?
Part of the problem is that boxing is a business first and a sport second. Everyday it looks more like the WWE.
Yes, I feel that in most cases you mentioned, it was corruption. The judges don't decide "oh, it's good for boxing if I let this guy win" all of a sudden. Still, on the Khan fight, I believe it was pure incompetence.
I don't know how people are complaining about the stoppage.
In my opinion the ref did Kirkland a disservice by allowing Molina to hug Kirkland close all night.
So he benefited from the crap ref all night too late to complain when he gets robbed by the same ref.
You got to take the bad with the good.

It doesn't matter if he came off that Peterson KO. Even pillow fisted Bradley almost sent Peterson to Queer Street. Danny Garcia is the champ. People fall in love with aggressive fighters so easily. Matthysse is a contender on paper, and it's not fair that the Ring Magazine is published in the U.S and they can't support an American Champ, but they give more publicity to his mandatory.
What is this nationalist bull****? Last I checked, the first amendment to the Constitution granted freedom of speech. The Ring can put whoever the hell they want on their cover, especially if it helps them sell more magazines.
Shane - Vacation comeback. Shane was not just past-prime but way over it.
Ortiz - Beat Andre Berto.
Cotto - Not elite since years.
Guerrero - Also beat "The Gatekeeper".
Alvarez - Interesting fight, if only because Canelo is bigger. But why the catchweight clause from a weight in which you've fought twice and are a current belt holder?
All the while, he really should have been fighting Pacquiao, but for whatever reason the fight was never made. I always thought Floyd would beat Pacquiao, but you can only enhance your legacy by fighting in the ring.
Ignoring the fanboys, I'd say nobody really stands out as overrated.
GGG: Based on his recent performances, and Martinez looking way past it, I'd say it's reasonable to assume that he is a top Middleweight. Is that such a long shot?
Matthysse: People think he can KO Garcia. So speculating that #2 can beat #1 is overrating? Garcia isn't a superstar you know.
Personally, I think Froch is a little overrated. I guess I just don't see what other people see. Actually, the whole SMW division is overrated. Some people talk like it's the meca of boxing but in fact nobody comes even near Ward.
Dont understand why any fighter at the end of his career would take a chance on a young lion. Unless that fighter is financially set. Cotto has 2 maybe 3 left. I say fight Floyd or Pac you deserve it ....then fight any of those guys.
Nope. Makes no sense at all in the pseudo-competition that is boxing and its championships.
