I think that the Middleweight division underrated. They just need to get some of these guys on American television.
I included a couple matches that have been announced/speculated and then added my own match ups. who takes it?

The biggest problem I see with this tournament is that Martinez is already recognized as the king in the division. Why would he lock himself into 4 fights to prove his on top? He'd be 40 by the end of it.
If you take him out of the equation the tourny looks good. The belt holders are holding the title's hostage and are reluctant to taking any risks. It'd be a nice alternative to get them to fight. I would cut the number of fighters to 8.
Martinez wouldn't have anyone to fight at 160 if he wasn't in the tourney, he'd prolly move down to 154, but i digress
I know that time, injuries, draws, money and other things would play into it. But those things weren't considered. This is just about the fights

Martinez KO 9 Lee...Lee is competitive early and then Martinez steps on the gas once he adjusts to Lee's style and busts him up late.
Sturm UD Zbik...Boring close fight, could have gone either way but since it was in Germany Sturm gets the decision.
Golovkin TKO 10 Geale Best fight of the first 1st round of the tournament, Geale is able to keep Golovkin away, but Geale eventually gasses and Golovkin sparks him late.
Wright MD Quillin It appears Winky is back to form. Winky's strong defensive guard negates Quillins offense. Winky wins a typical Winky Wright decision
Chavez UD Murray Chavez has worked on his fitness and nurtrition for this fight and it shows. He sets the tone early with the jab and big body shots. Murray has his spots but ultimately drops the decision to Chavez
Macklin UD Proksa Macklin has hung tough with 2 of the best middleweights in the world in his last two fights. Macklin hires a new trainer, sticks to the game plan and pulls out the decision
N'dam UD Bursak To be honest, I don't know a lot about either fighter, but i am going to say N'dam UD...
Pirog KO 8 Williams Pirog confirms 3 things in this fight: He is a legit threat of winning this tournament, Paul Williams is NOT a middleweight, and Paul Williams should not have taken this fight. Fight becomes one sided after 5 rounds up until the brutal ending in round 8
Again, I tried to keep the matches that are already happening, and the ones that are likely to happen (Martinez Lee IMO is coming) together. I'll post round 2 synapsis later.
Martinez vs Sturm Chavez JR vs Macklin
Golovkin vs Wright N'Dam vs Pirog

Just look at Kirkland for good matches between contenders. The guy has to fight Angulo, Molina, and Vanes, just to get a shot at Alvarez. And even then, nothing is guaranteed. I see Alvarez fighting Cotto once he loses to Floyd. Cotto only wants big fights and would probably love to get another title if he loses to Floyd. And Canelo would see Cotto as a way to land the Floyd fight. The only Canelo becomes a really good fight for Floyd is if he beats Kirkland or Cotto. That's it.
This is WHY I wanted Cotto/Canelo to happen, because now Canelo can simply avoid Cotto if/when he loses to Floyd. I'm hoping Cotto gets a shot at Canelo afterwards. Cotto beating Canelo will maybe open the door slightly for Cotto/Martinez? I wonder if Martinez would offer the same 80/20 split to Cotto? hmmmm....
i would like to see these guys start fighting eachother
(except for sturm. i just wonder when he's going to finally retire.)
we tend to focus a good deal on the champions and their opponents. some of the most even matches come from the fights among the contenders.
that's a lost art, matching contenders
not every fight has to be billed as the next big thing. some of these fights would make for terrific undercards and they dont cost a ton of dough.

I think Lou would let Macklin fight Quillin now that Sergio already beat him. After Quillin beats Winky, and he will beat him at this stage, he should go for Matthew Macklin. Macklin beat Sturm and gave Sergio all he wanted the first 6-7 rounds. Macklin is a legit and solid Middleweight. He'd whup Barker's a$$.
And I am not sure why people are so high on Andy Lee. His best win was a decent win over McEwan, where McEwan gave Andy Lee trouble until he stopped him. Quillin made McEwan look like the sub-par fringe contender he is. Quillin > Lee all day everyday.
Cause he's got nice tangibles: decent handspeed, power, length, good technique. Some nifty combos, things that get people excited. He's also Irish, doesn't hurt (see Macklin's 1st US fight, and he's not even full Irish), He's also missing some important parts like stamina, chin (? he hasn't been down much or at all? but there's room for doubt), defense, but it's not like Barker and Macklin beat him here (Barker has more responsible defense normally).

Lee is overhyped, but not necessarily overrated. I think he's technically sound with some pop in both hands. He has an amazing southpaw uppercut that he was catching Vera with. I just like his offensive arsenal, but his defense can still improve. I think Quillin could and would beat Lee, but it wouldn't be without a fight. Lee has a solid jab which he would try and keep Quillin at bay with, but I'm not really sold on his chin. I think Quillin would test it, and probably crack it lol. Dibella knows what he's doing.

IDK what the hell is being done with Quillin, but they need to get him young and relevant MWs to fight. If Dibella didn't let Lee fight Quillin, i'm not sure he would allow Macklin to do so either. Of course I could be wrong. The MW division is filled with potential, but there is too much stalling going around. The champs aren't unifying, Sturm is playing keep-away in Germany, Pirog is playing the same game in Russia, TR is using every excuse to keep Chavez from fighting the top guys, etc. The Middleweight division is a ****in mess lol. I wish a tournament could pop off already, it needs to happen for the sake of the division.

winner of golovkin and martinez fights pirog
the real question would be how much the tournament effects each man. martinez will probably be 38.
can he beat golovkin after two hard fights in a row at that age?
i tend to doubt it. just think about the strain that will put on his body given the way he trains and fights. he's basically a pure athlete who boxes.
golovkin is fresh. stringing tough fights and camps together will be much easier on him. he's also more likely to end a fight early with his power.
golovkin beats pirog
golovkin wins.
if they were to skip straight to the final three i'd pick martinez
he's got much more season. golovkin and pirog will have never been in a fighter of martinez class.
and while the russians are good, martinez has been fighting guys in that same class for years now and has been winning, often via stoppage.
it would be a BRUTAL tournament and would never happen.
guys would get carted out. they'd have to pay them big time dollars.
I'd like to see Macklin fight someone like Barker or Quillin next. And if he were to win that, fight someone like Golovkin for a title.

I hope by some ****in miracle that Zbik comes outta the Sturm fight with the WBA belt, and Murray comes outta Texas with WBC belt, so we can finally get **** going.
Very true, but I get the impression that Macklin is gonna start title hunting from now on. After giving a good account of himself vs. Sturm and Martinez, his confidence is at a high. On the other hand, Proksa's confidence just got knocked down a couple notches. He needs to win his European title back.

I thought Macklin/Proska would be interesting, because they're both coming off of loses and are trying to get back on track. Might make for a more exciting fight

Hope was roughing him up, and made him look bad. Although it was a controversial decision, I thought Proksa didn't do himself any favors.
How would you those guys 1-16
Just do it by the RING Rankings, regardless if you think one guy is better than the other. And then once you get to apoint where the fighter is not on the RING rankings, go with who you think is the better one or who you think would be seeded higher.
Sergio Martinez
Daniel Geale
Felix Sturm
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr
Sebastian Zbik
Dmitry Pirog
Matthew Macklin
Hassan N'Damn N'Jikam
Martin Murray
Gennady Golovkin
Grzegorz Proksa
That's the RING rankings, right or wrong. Go with who deserves to be ranked higher after that to you or who you think would be ranked higher in a tournament.
Paul Williams
Peter Quillin
Andy Lee
Max Bursak
Winky Wright
So, with those rankings, the tournament would look like this.
(1) Martinez vs. (16) Wright
(8) N'Jikam vs. (9) Murray
(5) Zbik vs. (12) Williams
(4) Chavez Jr vs. (13) Quillin
(6) Pirog vs. (11) Proksa
(3) Sturm vs. (14) Lee
(7) Macklin vs. (10) Golovkin
(2) Geale vs. (15) Bursak
I get the way you were going though with the realistic matchups being made for the first round and all. But, fantasy, that's how I'd set it up.
Well, some of the match-ups are likely to happen. Chavez is planning to fight Murray, Kid Chocolate is planning to fight Winky, and Sturm is planning to fight Zbik. I don't think Proksa/Macklin would happen, especially since Proksa just lost his title lol. I see Macklin fighting Pirog in the near future, assuming he still got a belt with him. Dibella is lookin to monopolize the MW division with Martinez/Macklin/Lee.

I like this idea on paper, but it could never happen unless they were all kidnapped and thrown into an arena together gladiator style!
Yeah it's too bad. I wish they could get rid of all of the paper belts and do this in every division
He should have seeded them by their rankings. I doubt Andy Lee would have to fight the #1 seed of them all in the first round. The seeding just seems off to me.
