Posters still calling Floyd a cherry picker?

Floyd Mayweather has fought some very solid opposition over the course of his career and is without question one of the all time greats. I think the beef with Floyd and people calling him a cherrypicker stems from 3 things. 1. Floyd Mayweather vs Arturo Gatti as opposed to Kostya Tzyu or Ricky Hatton at 140. 2. Floyd Mayweather went into "retirement" right when the Welterweight division was red hot and there were several fights people were itching to see. 3. Obviously the Pacquiao fight never materialised. Now it would be far fetched to say that all these things are Floyds fault and/or were bad decisions. But it is also safe to say that if Floyd had atleast fought some of these fights (at that time) then his resume looks a LOT better and doesn't get as much critisism.

It's not that Floyd has fought BAD opponents (well maybe Baldomir) and he has a very solid resume...but its not elite. Call it a function of his era or whatever. For whatever reason--his fault or others or both--he didn't fight some tough challengers/big names during their primes. While is unjust to call him a career cherrypicker, its equally unjust to pretend he fought all comers and met all challenges.

Floyd's last couple of fights... hatton at 147-- Everyone knew hatton was crap at welter,, gatekeeper like collazo proved that,, floyd should have fought hatton at 140 for lineal championship, something floyd never got,, and it would make floyd a 3 division champ in 3 weight classes in 3 straight fights (baldomir 147, oscar 154, hatton 140) That is what a henry armstrong would have done... JMM- huge cherrypick,,, JMM a great fighter but he counters aggressive come-forward fighters like manny, diaz,,,, barrera and casamoyer gave him alot of problems because they could box... Does anyone really think that a smaller, older, slower, flat-footed, less powerful, counter-puncher is going to outbox a faster, younger, taller, bigger, more powerful, quick-footed, boxing genius like floyd,,,, DId anyone at the time really think jmm had a chance of winning,,, Mosely- true he was the champ at welter but was approaching 40 and hadnt fought in 16 months, and was coming off a huge upset of come-forward margs.... Not a huge cherrypick so i wont give floyd much flack but would have liked to see this fight after the oscar fight instead of cotto-mosely that fall ortiz- huge cherrypick,,, ortiz had one legit win vs berto who isnt that great,,,, ortiz can only come forward and ko somebody,, thats his only way to win,,, maidana, and peterson already proved that ortiz was not elite... Cotto- was on his last leg,, he had already gotten beaten down by margs and manny, had struggled with low level opponents like shot-mayorga, one legged yuri, and one-eyed margs,,, Floyd would have gotten more respect if he fought cotto in 2008 but he was "retired" Guerrero- Ghost has never beaten anyone good ever,,, the most bogus multiple division champ ever,,, slow, wins vacant belts vs limited competition, has never beaten a top guy... once again a guy looked great vs berto, but in actuality, berto is not that good Now Canelo-- Legit fight for floyd,, not too many issues with this fight except for floyd wont fight him at 154 but instead at a catchweight, even though last year he said he likes to fight guys were they more comfortable at so there wont be any excuses, but then when faced with a legit, in their prime, opponent, he wants a catchweight,,, totally hypocrite but his fans dont care, as long as he stays unbeaten...You're trying to hard. Has floyd's opponents ever had a good victory after him ghost- no but still too soon, but ghost never had a top win anyways cotto- nope ortiz-nope mosely- nope jmm-- only the manny win hatton- nope unless you count lazcano and puali as top level wins instead of showcase fight for hatton oscar-nope baldomir-nope zab-nope shambra-nope gatti-nope bruscles- never had any good wins chop-chop= nope ndou- nope sosa- nope JLC- yes, so you have to go back a decade to fight a guy that had some more top wins after floyd fight... Floyd himself admitted on video he cherry picked his fights. What else you need more to say he did not?

OK smart guy .... answer this simple question that I asked the other poster. Let me know how many well established WW that Floyd fought. Meaning, not opponents that had 0, 1 or 2 fights at WW but guys who really proved that they are top WWs consistently. Floyd has been at WW since 2005 so you must have volume 1 to 100 in responses with all the opponents that fit the above description in which Floyd has fought ....... I don't think there's a fighter in history who fought the amount of Top ranked fighters Mayweather has fought that was also considered a cherry picker. Last time I checked Khan was ranked #2 in the WW division. They are trying everything to make Khan a future opponent for Floyd. Let me know how many well established WW that Floyd fought. Meaning, not opponents that had 0, 1 or 2 fights at WW but guys who really proved that they are top WWs consistently.

Did he fight the nr 1 fighter in his weightclass and the nr 1 p4p for the last few years?No?Then he is cherrypicked....

Floyd's next two fights are going to be the Khan/Alexander winner and then the Garcia/Matthysee winner. All prime, and when they face Floyd all champs. The cherry picking thing is really stupid. :rofl: One has no chin and the other is crap....yep, you can bet thats exactly the kind of fare Floyd is likely to serve up. And so it continues..

just think about it, Floyds best wins till date are JLC and Diego Corrales. Both fights happened over a decade ago. Then he fought all the weak ass competition at the right time and "retired"

Shane - Vacation comeback. Shane was not just past-prime but way over it. Ortiz - Beat Andre Berto. Cotto - Not elite since years. Guerrero - Also beat "The Gatekeeper". Alvarez - Interesting fight, if only because Canelo is bigger. But why the catchweight clause from a weight in which you've fought twice and are a current belt holder? All the while, he really should have been fighting Pacquiao, but for whatever reason the fight was never made. I always thought Floyd would beat Pacquiao, but you can only enhance your legacy by fighting in the ring.

It's very easy to mask these opponents by saying "Oh look he was a champion" or "he was p4p". It's smoke and mirrors. Mayweather tends to pick certain kinds of opponents. Almost all of them have no speed or no jab. Flatfooted and come forward are two other things he also looks for. It's a strange way to prove he's not a cherrypicker, by pulling a bunch of opponents who look much better on paper than in real life. Like Canelo, Guerrero top 10 p4p lol. Maybe the guy needs to consult the dictionary for "cherrypicking".
