I think Jim is being honest as he sees it. Also, on this week's The Fight Game, Max Kellerman said that Joshua/Klitschko was the greatest event he has ever covered, then said that Alvarez/GGG 'wasn't going to be the biggest fight in history, not the best middleweight fight or biggest fight in 10 years'. Again I believe he believes it all to be true. he's glorifying Joshua contracted to Showtime and running down HBO's largest PPV match this year. I hope the Joshua hype is doing what they think will be good for boxing. Joshua is good 19-0 probably the best HW out there but he's only had 19 bouts, when he cleans out the HW division and over 30 fights then talk greatness. There is definitely some Kool-Aid going around HBO Sports studio, other than honesty there may be something fishy since Golden Boy wants Joshua and his ties are with HBO.
Now that he's legitimately proven his critics wrong and defeated arguably the best (and most feared) 175 lb fighter right now how well do you think he would do against these past HOF/ATG fighters?
Ezzard Charles
Harold Johnson
Archie Moore
Bob Foster
Michael Spinks
Dwight Muhammad Qawi
Matthew Saad Muhammad
Roy Jones jr
Bernard Hopkins
Thomas Hearns
Great question, made me look up Harold Johnson; man did this dude fight some greats. Ward would lose to all but Hearns(power/chin issues at 175), Saad Muhammad(lost to all top flight and many not), not sure about Johnson. He would have paid dearly if he had fouled Moore, Charles or Qawi. Qawi was a bad, bad man. RJJ would have played Captain Hook. Spinks is similar but wins due to reach. As someone else said Hopkins would have drove Wards balls up his throat. As much talent as he has, Ward doesn't have real power at 175 other than Kovalez he has no real KO's at LHW, excuse me TKO Paul Smith. Ward has a real reach problem at 175, 71" even RJJ has more reach. Even Michael Moore would have gave him problems at 175 78" reach. If you don't have reach at 175 you have to have real power. Ward is a IBHOF lock and at 168 a GOAT. Ward probably doesn't have much competition at LHW or even Cruiser today but your list is too much and too great at 175.
BS over the glove weight. It's licensed as a Boxing match by NSAC and are using Uniform Rules of Boxing: over 147# must use 10 ounce gloves. They can use any 10 oz. boxing gloves approved by NSAC unless otherwise specified in their contracts.
LOL fair enough. Might wanna edit some in or do so in the future. Its a tough read without paragraphs with longer stuff like that.
Thanks, got it straight now.
He probably placed a bet on PAC. Trying to rationalize the fight by giving out a 10-8 round. Atlas is a joke and should not commentate while he has pacs love in his mouth
Are you from Argentina too? Horn only landed 15% of his punches not as many punches as he did headbutts. When a boxer clearly dominates a round as thoroughly as Pac did the 9th it can be a 10-8, I had it 10-8 as most people who have been involved in the sport did.
Horn seems like a good kid and no he did't do anything wrong. Can't blame him for lame judges. Pac is a small mountain now, best he think twice before trying to climb K2 or Everest. That's rare air up there, Thurman, Spence, Crawford, Garcia, et al. Better to stay on the ground, get a trainer to pro up his game before trying to climb these mountains.
Paulie was a decent boxer, not much power and should beat McG handily but he got hit a lot something Floyd doesn't do. So here I would say that McG has a chance at a lucky punch, not even a slim chance hitting Floyd cleanly. It really didn't need this question to prove it's all about the money not the game.
The problem for me is that so many young fighters now look at him and think the way to all that success and money is stay undefeated and take minimal risks, so they try to manage their own career in that way. The thing is though, Floyd never took an easy route early on. He wasn't really that selective until late on in his career, but that's also the Floyd that made a lot of money and that's what young fighters now see.
I don't blame Floyd for that though, he did what was best for his career as he should and fair play to him but i think it has influenced a new generation of boxers in a way that is detrimental to the sport, but it wasn't purposely done for that reason of influencing people, he was just looking out for his own career.
So yeah, i don't think his influence has been good for the sport, but i don't blame him for anything either. If people want to point the finger at Floyd for "damaging the sport", then people must also direct the blame in other directions too. The fans and boxing business allowed him to do it. Nobody was forced to buy his fights.
It's up to the new era to change things and up to the fans to force the industry to make the best fights if they want fans to buy it. Promoters and TV networks would be forced to make good fights if the fans stop paying for bullsh1t fights.
I agree with everything you said, I see young guys all the time and all they think is, Mayweather=Money. Well it worked for him but 1:1,000,000+ don't have his genetics or work ethic so it has hurt in that these kids could be good boxers but for their emulation of Floyd.
how was he good for boxing?
the masses don't enjoy his fights... they just been hoping that he gets beat for years...
if any casual watches his fights they don't come back for me... they fall asleep and say never again...
Plus he set the blueprint to act like a diva and choose when to fight certain fighters... that's just the truth...
i don't see why the hell he fought ortiz, guerrero, maidana, or berto...
exciting boxers are good for boxing...
mad props to floyd for making so many millions by mind f u ckin the masses for years though 'ALL PRESS IS GOOD PRESS' in the vacuum that was boxing in the last decade, Mayweather vs whomever keep the lights on boxing. He did his share of damage but he and his fights attention more than out weigh the damage.
fury gets some credit, but vlad sucked.
Are you talking in their fight or career? Fury's career doesn't come close to Klitchko's, he will be a IBHOF member. Not one of the greats of all-time career but considering his Era.
McG isn't going to use a wide MMA stance he doesn't have to watch for kicks or take downs from Floyd. If he does not a problem for Floyd getting inside as he doesn't have to watch for kicks or take downs either. Besides where is McG going to get all of this room from inside a square. I can't see nothing that McG can do to stop Floyd from doing what he has always done and wants to do in the ring.
Lomachenko is P4P one of the best boxer in the business and he's a thrill to watch, Rigondeaux is a good fighter, fast and adapts well in the ring both are in my top 5 P4P list; Lomo at 1, Ridondeaux at 5 behind Ward, GGG and Crawford. Lomachenko is a throwback boxer, he moves, slips, parries, feints and step around or to the side, he can lead or counter-punch, I have not seen anyone as good as Loma this early in their Professional career since Ray Leonard. I want to see how he handles himself with Rigo, this could be a fight of the decade type fight like Leonard-Hearns I. I don't think I am over hyping to say, it has the makings and possibilities.
Most of Gs fights are chess matches, he's just been a great finisher. I don't get why people think he's a slugger. That's not what I see when I watch his fights. He is a chess-master in the ring and when you make a wrong move you pay heavily for doing so. Canelo can match the physical but the mental edge goes to GGG. In the traditional l sense I don't think he's seen as a slugger, but a puncher/boxer. Canelo a boxer/puncher. GGG is like Sugar Ray Leonard in Marvelous Hagler's body and Canelo is like Hagler in Leonard's body for this match.
Does Mikey have Jeff Horn "I can Beat the World Syndrome"? Good fight at 140 against Broner, Top 10 fighter in the world but Cotto at 154 before the end of December; get real or get killed.
I wouldn't think Canelo's plan calls for backing up, he is or will be as strong as GGG on the inside. I think Canelo may move in and out using angles he can't back straight up with GGG or come straight in has he has in the past. He needs to get in range and work but plan his exit, hook out or jab out at angles. GGG is coming to look for you so you better be off to his sides.
Backing up and fighting off the back foot aren't the same thing. That's true, you can put your heels down and dig in inside/outside, coming and going. I think that what he needs to do changing the pace, using angles. If you stay in front of GGG you are a live target to be hit hard and often.
Never saw Skip until last week on YouTube, always known and like Sterling. When he was talking about the Event at first I thought he was punking on Sterling then I figured out he was for real, for real a fool when it comes to boxing. Floyd Sr. can hold his own with anyone but I really would like to see Skip talk boxing with Teddy Atlas, Teddy would turn red, start spitting and Go off on poor Skippy. It's people like him that confuse casual fans with his baseless comments and opinions on boxing. Supposed sports experts like him and his comments hurt any sport they talk about, you want find me commenting on Rugby, Lacrosse or Polo likewise he shouldn't talk boxing. I agree he DKSAB but I don't feel sorry for a fool who's mouth clearly overloads his a**.
Teddy is high spirited, makes off the wall comments, is insensitive to others opinions and stands by his opinions. Sound like people on this forum, although we don't have a mic just a blog. But Teddy is a throwback to "old school" boxers and trainers. As a long time trainer of boxers from amateur to contenders and champions he has a boxing knowledge not matched by many. When a trainer with his experience and knowledge watches a fight or fighter he see things 90% of us don't or at least sees things in a different way. While we may see a bunch of wires in a outlet an electrician knows which wire is the problem by what is or isn't happening or the way an engineer may see an unsafe load or an accountant may see one figure out of place in a ledger. You see things in your occupation I wouldn't see, he's an old Pro and all he knows is boxing. Love him or hate him but I respect him, unlike Max Kellerman who sees the obvious, repeats the obvious, tows the company line, tries to be PC and has no true boxing insight and no knowledge gleaned from years in sweaty, hot, hectic corners. And working with Cus, Teddy didn't have to learn boxing, it was driven into him daily.
Everybody on the bandwagon now;bet the Mayweather win by NC, ND DQ line. This event was never going to happen until MMA/McGregor money came in and it came in big (By who?) but it was enough for Vegas gambling money to make the event. The odds are what they are, books protecting themselves. But with NSAC calling it a boxing match, let the games begin
Floyd's skill set and style makes it boring but effective. Ward's thinking and adapting style in the ring makes it boring, mainly because he's never faced an opponent multi-dimensional enough to adapt with him. Floyd's style is set and he's going to win or lose with it, Ward is going to find whatever he needs to win.
I agree, it's sad. Colon was a potential contender, the referee didn't do his job! Williams was rabbit punching constantly. There is the huge danger to boxers, rabbit punches. Watched Elbiali v Brooker last night and was thinking about the danger of rabbit punches but the referee did a good job. Hopefully your post reminds fans like myself of Colon. May God bless and keep him, praying for miracles. One last thing Colon still has more head movement than Horn, LOL.
