He is def in the top 20. Most of boxing had him beating Canelo twice out of his prime. He is still an undefeated fighter in most people's eyes despite all the haters on a boxing forum.
I think this is the fight K2 wants for Golovkin. Arum said K2 contacted him about the fight. It would have to be at 168. But it will give GGG the most exposure he has ever gotten and could possibly be a PPV knowing Arum. I would assume the plan after this fight would be to go back down to 160 for Golovkin and try to get a match with Sergio in the fall. Having fought a common opponent (Chavez) would also make the fight bigger.
I know some will say why not fight Ward then? But Chavez and Sergio are much bigger fights than Ward at the moment.
This is really petty stuff. The A side talk is tiresome. It's obvious to me Canelo is the A side. Just compare the numbers with both of their fights with Floyd. The fight with Canelo set records. But to make a fight with diva cotto you need to give him his way.
And I'm surprised with all the rematch talk. I guess they plan to vacate the title...
I would say around 500k. But just like his other fights that didn't crack a million, the official numbers won't be released. This is the worst fight he has taken since his showtime deal.
I don't see the point in debating this. It's a PPV fight......because you have to pay to see it. If not, wait a week for the replay. I bought 9 tickets yesterday. Should be a great night of boxing.
I bought 9 tix monday. I just checked ticketmaster to see how it's doing and its close to selling out and it's only been on sale today for 2 hours!.
This guy may sell out the garden in a day! It's kind of a big deal for him. This may be an indication that the PPV sales may be better than people expect. He's about to be the next big Star in boxing, if he's not already.
Since when has Cotto been hard to hit? I see Canelo walking him down all night. And Cotto hasn't been deep into the later rounds since Trout. I can see Cotto gassing out if he runs all night. Canelo by late stoppage.
Canelo will be the first legitimate opponent Cotto has faced since teaming up with the Roach. And this fight will be an eye-opening experience for many who have brought into this so-called Cotto rejuvenation.
Canelo will beat Cotto soundly ..... :boxing:
I know many fanboys will ignorantly view this as some form of hate, but my comments have nothing to do with any absurd Cotto hate :lol1:
This just a spot-on prediction.
This is how I see it also. Cotto hasn't fought anyone good since the loss to Trout.
Martinez Doesn't last 5 rounds with GGG. He was too easy to hit fighting with his hands down, and no fighter has been able to run from him with how he cuts off the ring. Macklin dropped him in 2012 and gave him a tough fight. GGG destroys him. Martinez was good but not great. GGG I believe to be on his way to being a great one.
If you watched the SBnation video, Ward himself said GGG would not be next if it happens. Golovkin will hopefully fight Lemieux in October. And Ward will fight another BUM. Then GGG will press to get the Cotto Canelo winner. This whole debate about nothing is premature.
Lemeiux is a solid champion. Ndam was coming off a one sided win off Stevens and got a beating from David. Gabe took a beating as well from David. Gabe gave Quillen a good fight the year before. David is step above these guys and is a deserving champion but he is not on Gennady's level. No one at 160 is though. But I see your point, he will quickly become just another BUM to the GGG haters. I think it will be exciting as long as it lasts, and is the best MW fight for GGG with the opportunity to get another belt.
Sounds to me like Cotto wants to get out of this fight. Team Cotto keeps moving the goal post every time Canelo gives in to his demands. He needs to shut up and fight.
If you don't like catchweights fine, I really don't either. But it is a fair catchweight. Gennady doesn't need to go to 168. Meet in the Middle. The ball is in Ward's court. Gennady doesn't look scared, he looks to genuinely want the fight, but wants an even playing field. Ward should at least counter offer if he's serious.
Maybe the worst metaphor I've heard in a while. I get his point tho. The fight was PPV because David needed to get paid a lot or he wasn't taking it. and the purses were more than allowed in the HBO budget. The purses did not total anywhere near to what Floyd's was so comparing the numbers is apples to oranges.
Not bad. I bought myself a hat on the way out. I brought 8 friends. 7 of which had never been to a fight. They all said they were having a great time well before the main event even started. Great show and great night overall. The atmosphere was outstanding in there.
I've got no reason to believe it won't but he's unwilling to find out.
I wouldn't say unwilling, just premature. The guy has PPV fights lined up. Once he has all the belts at 60 he really doesn't have much of a choice but to move up. But it would be dumb of him to move up now. Canelo/Cotto vs GGG would be the biggest PPV to make in the sport.
I don't think GGG has the frame to move up to 168.
GGG strengths:
-- Power
-- Boxing skills
GGG weaknesses
-- Mediocre speed
-- Shortish (listed at 5'9")
Power does not necessarily travel up in weight class. A much greater boxer than GGG, Roberto Duran, had single punch power as a lightweight. This didn't move up with him, even to WW. He had to gain more skills and get cute. Which he did.
Point being, you have to land the power on the opponent without getting hurt in the process, and GGG can't give up height and reach and expect to succeed against guys over 6' tall such as Ward.
Then again, it's hard to predict GGG's capabilities, because (very unlike Duran), GGG has not been tested against great competition.
I say no, he can't carry the power up and land it.
Interesting reply. Height and reach are very important, which is why I mostly selected videos of larger men who have sparred with him. Because they obviously got touched if they respect the power.
I agree he doesn't have the frame of a SMW. MW is the weight he should stay at. He would have to add lean mass and do it over time. His skill, chin and punching power is what would allow him to be successful at SMW.
What belt has Golovkin actually earned besides IBF?
So how did Canelo earn a Middle weight title and make a defense without fighting a middle weight?
This is a duck and you can try to spin this however way you like. But don't say you are a fan of boxing while defending this garbage. Canelo loses and the fans lose. GGG's legend grows without even fighting. It would be funny if it weren't so sad.
So I'm guessing your answer to my question is zero then.
He earned his belts by beating the opponents in front of him to earn interim champ status. It's not his fault the regular champs decided to give up their belts quietly instead of getting an ass whooping and losing the belts regardless. There is no scenario where the duckers look better than Golovkin.
Golovkin isn't looking so good. He's about three years from retirement and hasn't fought anyone.
You WISH he retires in 3 years. This guy could fight till he's 40 easy. His fights last an average of 3 rounds and he takes no damage. Canelo's best wins are trout and lara, GGG beats both inside 5. Which welterweight will the great Canelo fight next?
I have never heard Golovkin or Sanches call out Lara, they know he posses the most threat
Vegas would have Lara as another 4-1 under dog, at least. It's a mismatch.
