Before those leg injuries I was hoping to see Sergio Martinez near his best vs GGG....This fight would have answered a lot about GGG...could he take a punch, could he overcome an elite talent, how well could he deal with an unorthodox guy who had speed, heart and a good chin
Back then I was picking Martinez until the leg troubles the past few years
What about you guys?
Golovkin wouldn't take the fight with a 2012 Sergio. It would be like Ward, where Golovkin acts brave and calls him out. Then runs with his tail tucked. My dog does the same thing with pitbulls. Barks, then hides behind me when they bark back. Maybe I should nickname him Genady.
:lol1::lol1:
i wish we could have seen this fight but martinez didn't want it. i'm pretty firmly convinced that golovkin murders any version of martinez. dibella was too
Golovkin Vs the Martinez that faced Williams and Pavlik would be good.
Martinez is slick enough and good enough to keep things interesting early on.
Due to Golovkin's ability to cut off the ring, and Martinez's iffy chin..i think GGG would stop Martinez in the second half of the fight.
prime martinez would give golovkin some problems. he was a very accurate puncher. i sitll think he gets knocked out.
2012 amrtinez was not prime. alex bunema - first williams fight, give or take. he looked great agaisnt pavlk, too.
"could he take a punch"
:lol1:
you're f#cking kidding me, right?
the guy reportedly hasn't been down in 350 am fights and 30+ as a professional. not once in the gym, or in a sanctioned fight.
he takes shots from middleweights and just snarls.
Martinez Doesn't last 5 rounds with GGG. He was too easy to hit fighting with his hands down, and no fighter has been able to run from him with how he cuts off the ring. Macklin dropped him in 2012 and gave him a tough fight. GGG destroys him. Martinez was good but not great. GGG I believe to be on his way to being a great one.

The Martinez we saw on offer from 08-12 was one of the p2p best on the planet, he would have beaten GGG. The Kazakh has a big punchers chance though.
Sergio's movements would be completely neutralised by GGG's cutting the ring off ability. And dont forget his shaky chin, even if this fight goes the distance, Martinez hits the canvas at least 2-3 times, which makes winning decision almost impossible.
Listen to DiBella's interview, he knew that Sergio had no chance against GGG.
Some comments are very clear to me, haters are trying to find some overrated fighter from the past to beat GGG in fantasy match up, because they cant pick nobody from current 160 division to beat Gennady, hehe
GGG wins, Sergio's defense is too leaky. Sergio has too many come back from behind wins over B-C level guys.
The only thing I will disagree with is the people making the 12th round of Chavez a big deal. So what a 180 lb chavez dropped and hurt a guy who moved up from jr middle. we have all seen what happens when jr fights a guy his actual size. That he was unable to put away a guy who was out on his feet right in front of him shows how crude he was. A 10-8 round dont mean much when you were outboxed the previous 11 rounds.
I remember on the degale v dirrell fight one of the commentators mentioned dirrell beating giggi and even showed a pick. Would love to see giggi in with a boxer like degale or dirrell to be honest
Degale would be good. Not sure about Dirrell, maybe in a 4 rounder. He freaks out vs punchers not half as good as Ggg. Remember he got banned from HBO for running non stop vs Curtis Stevens, then the whole AA fiasco.
Dirrell? AFAIK he beat him by 1pt at a friendly in the US, and lost by 5 at the Olympics. You'd think he'd do much better vs smaller puncher in the amateur format

Didn't andre beat giggi in the amateurs? Serious question?

Dude you voted for Ward over Ggg via stoppage. That pretty much disqualifies you from the discussion.
The bigger, faster Andre Dirrell couldnt outbox Ggg over 3 rounds with headgear and big gloves, and cyclist turned boxer Sergio does with ease, sure thing.
