James 'Lights Out' Toney after training session for PeterI: "I got something for Samuel, I've got a wicked pine box, ready to go, UPS, Nigeria, Africa! I don't believe in none of that black magic-voodoo shit. I belive in beating his ass, period!"
James Toney sparring with WBA Light Heavy Champ Danny Green: "Fight me boy, come on! You're scared to get hit, your European!" LOL
Gotta throw Michael Katsidis in the mix! The guy could knock out an elephant. He battered Earl and Amonsot to a pulp and not many people would wanna trade stamps with the guy!
i saw the march 08 edition at the bookstore yesterday so you know januarys way outdated
That really doesn't make a difference! The point being that Taylor/Pavlik fight was 9/9/07 and Jan 08 issue said it would be in next issue! Four months is surely a long time between drinks to put together the article along with Kessler/Calzaghe and the Ratings which are very outdated! The features of the magazine should coincide along with the correct timeframe and not be so misleading publishing material that is in fact 5 months behind. Instead of The Ring putting Jan 08 it really should have been August 2007 issue. This is VERY misleading on the Magazine's behalf and at $25AU the content should at least be up to date. I really enjoy reading the Ring Magazine but surely the content MUST be up to date and not 5 months behind misleading it's readers!
I was wondering how the hell did toney make wieght to fight in the middlewieght division he was 6ft as they say and he was 200lbs+ when he started boxing.
Is it possible for him to do this without cheating e.g. steroids or anything else?
heres the middlewieght toney

Well cudnet get some gd pics of jones but u get my points a thing that rearly stands out is how big his biceps got what type of effect do u think it had on him?
It's quite phenomenal how Toney made 168pds from being a 200+pds quarterback at high school! Toney ate lettuce leaves and drank water coupled with a brutal training regime. This is farken extremely difficult with the hunger pains you'd get after training and all you can eat are lettuce leaves! Day before Jones fight Toney was in hospital on drip trying to rehydrate in order to be able to fight.
Thomas 'Hit Man' Hearns' right cross could easily take out Cruiserweights! Dick Tiger, Carlos Zararte, Ruben Olivares, Wilfredo Gomez, Jack Dempsey, Archie Moore, Sandy Saddler. All these guys could hit VERY HARD!
 why he was undisputed junior middleweight champ and was robbed against taylor in my opinion, but why?
Agreed! Winky is an awesome fighter (lack of KO power aside) with one of the BEST defences in the bizzo! He's a cagey Southpaw who always comes to fight. I was particularly impressed with is victory over Mosley and the moment he dropped his hands and let Mosley hit him with a couple of thunderbolts! Even Vargas fight was awesome viewing! Definitely got robbed against Taylor!!!
No doubt it is Kelly Pavlik
He turned from midwest tomato can fighter to superstar overnight.
Miranda was no doubt weight drained and that made Pavlik look good.
Than he fought the way overrated Taylor who had never faced a puncher. Even Taylor who had never put anyone on the canvas in like 2+ years almost KO Pavlik.
Dont get me wrong. Pavlik proved something. He is just being put way way to high on people's list.
Don't make excuses Pantera!!! I get a sense of "Sour Grapes" reading your post!!! Obviously you're a Miranda fan but he's been a Middleweight all his career! Was he weight drained when he flogged Green, gave Abraham a tight argument (headbutts aside)???? I'm not knocking Miranda who's an all action fighter who always comes to fight, but Pavlik was just too good for him and handed his ass to him on a platter on the night! Taylor was undefeated at the time and yes he did get lucky against Hopkins and Wright! But hey, fighters do need luck from time to time and Taylor was lucky on both occasions where it could have so easily gone the other way! He KO'd top rated fighters and Champion in Middle Division so he's taken no short cut to the Middleweight Title and thoroughly deserves WBC and WBO belts. Abraham won't fight him unless the fight's in Germany and Abraham's uncles are judging the fight and his father's refing it!
How the hell can people say Kelly Pavlik is overrated??? The guy 'destroyed' the top fighters in his Division in Miranda who usually gives those kinds of beatings to his opponents, not the other way around! Pavlik's performance in this fight made me a fan of his which was 'Hagler' like. Pavlik KO'd former World Champion and undefeated (at the time) Jermain Taylor with devastating shots that Taylor simply had no answer to. He'll KO Abraham in quick time also and become undisputed Middle champ.
Joel Casamayor is the most overated fighter!!!
It's sad that Fenech and Walcott both lost their rematches.
They would be even more known today if they had gotten the decisions go their way in the first fights.
Walcott could've beaten Louis, Charles and Marciano. Marciano did beat him fairly but Walcott was up on all scorecards until Rocky got that legendary right hand flush into Walcott's jaw.
Fenech could've been a 4 division champion.
It was sad when Fenech got KO'd by Nelson in rematch. I was 13yo and remeber sitting there stunned and my heart sank when Fenech got dropped for the second time then the ref stepped in and stopped it. The first fight draw robbed Jeff of his heart and soul. Walcott dropped Louis twice and befuddled him with his savvy style which Louis found hard to deal with. Louis even left the ring right after the bell when the officials strongly recommended Louis to hang around for the scores to be read out.
These three decisions were VERY controversial:
Jeff Fenech v Azumah NelsonI was an absolute disgrace.
Jersey Joe Walcott v Joe LouisI was another absolute disgrace.
Bob Mirovic v Nikolai 'Lumberjack' Valuev was major BS decision.
Isnt Peden retired?
Bomber pulled the plug after his shock loss to Ranee Ganoy in Queensland one year ago. He said before the Ganoy fight that it'd be his last tilt at a Title.
Ive heard Nelson actually had Malaria during the first fight or some other real bad disease. But Fenech was a really good fighter regardless.
Dude! This is a load of BS! Fighters get checked out by a Doctor before they fight and would not have let Azumah fight if he had malaria. Were not talking about a general cold here!!! Malaria's serious s*** to have. And if the Doctor let Azumah fight with malaria the Doctor should be banned from ever practicing again. This is just Azumah's BS excuse for getting taken to school in first fight.
I'll tell you something about Nate Campbell, I'm picking him to beat Diaz. He is looking nice against some very tough sparring partners. He did 10 rounds today with 3 guys changing in fresh and was schooling them. He explained Diaz's strategy and it's apparent he's done his homework.
I'm in all of the gyms here, these pros are just regular guys. They all love talking boxing and respect people who know their boxing. They know I'm there to do a job that helps them as much as it helps me so we all get along.
Campbell's management should make sure they keep him away from Robbie "Bomber' Peden! I actually saw how Peden KO'd him:owned: and won the Title. Still to this day I ask myself why the hell did Campbell drop his hands and give a pro fighter a free shot like that:boxing: ???? Nonetheless I still loved it being an Aussie!!! Winky Wright got away with it against Mosley as did Mayorga v Forrest. The same thing happened to Mayorga v Tito! Didn't Mayorga know Tito hits like a mule???
How people can say James Toney's a wasted talent is beyond me. The guy's a throwback fighter and was a 'poster boy' as an active World Champion. You'd have to go back 50 years to see another fighter with a record like James'. Chavez is another who comes to mind.
He's always fought the very best and never knocked back anyone. Toney's a former middleweight who's now campaigning as a Heavyweight gives an indication the guy has Brass 'Koyones'!
The guy will enter Boxing's Hall of Fame with more fanfare than Roy Jones who only fought at Heavy once against one of the weakest WBA Heavy Champ.
Best Trainer: Freddie Roach aka Eddie Futch of the 21st century.
Johnny Lewis is also one of the best.
Manny Steward has virtually worked with every fighter so that's telling you something.
Worst Trainer: Arnie Rosenthal trains his fighters to get KO'd in best fashion!
Light Out is the man! Former IBF Middleweight, super middle and cruiserweight champ of the world says it all. All those title fights were rippers! Toney in the early 90s and 2003 Jirov fights was an awesome fighter to watch. I loved his body to head shot combos on the inside then he'd follow up. BHop chooses oponents carefully like Jermain. Toney follows old school motto: "Anybody, Anytime, Anywhere". Sleepingtime, Perfecto, Lights Out!
Roy jones out os top 10 P4P
Roy Jones' legacy has been severely dented due to his two bad Kos to Tarver and my man Glen Johnson! Johnson Ko'd his ass pretty bad! Jones is 20th P4P all time list! Lights Out
1) Both Toney and Batchelder were found guilty of taking illegal substances and both subsequently banned from boxing for a year (May 2008) and both ordered to pay $2,500 by CSAC
2) He was meant to fight jirov in russia in September this year but highly unlikely. Refer to 1).
3) Toney got both Ring Magazines Fighter 2003 of the Year and fight with Jirov got fight of the Year 2003 also.
I hope he does go on and fight! He's all class!
wlad is the best fighter of alltime, he has everything. amazing power.
amazing skill, his jab is like larry holmes is left hook is like joe fraizer his right hand has the power of big george but straighter.
he has great movement. plus he is 6 feet 7 inches tall. and know he has the best offensive fighter in boxing history training him.
prediction wla will not lose for atleast the next 5 years
LOL LOL LOL! The best fighter of all time??? That's the funniest thing I've heard today!
I saw the fight.
The fight was boring, annoying, disappointing, and fustrating.
Nothing great about that fight.
Booker is a nobody who was undefeated in 22 fights because he fought nothing but bums with huge loss records.
If Toney was anywhere near as great as you people claim he is, he should have put this fat, powerless, hugging piece of shit Booker away in the 2nd round.
It went 12 sleep-inducing rounds.
He finally got Booker to go to one knee in the 9th round I think.
So after that I expected Toney to take out Booker.
But no, he still couldn't get him.
Both fighters had no power whatsoever.
Fights like these are the reason why I cannot stand the HW division.
So tell me why you think Toney is great for going 12 uneventful rounds with a fat, weak, no skills having nobody?
Toney actually tore his tricep muscles in the first round or he definitely would have stopped Booker early. During Toney's recovery after snapping his achilles tendon while preparing for McCline, he went on a weights program and all he was doing was upper body weights. He came in massive for Booker fight and due to overtraining upper body, both triceps went early.
Without a doubt Roberto 'Hands of Stone' Duran should be in HOF! Once this guy hit you you were going to sleep! He's a 'REAL OLD SCHOOL WARRIOR'! Put it this way most people wouldn't wanna trade stamps with the man let alone trade punches with him! Duran was also s very smart boxer who also had a very good defence with constant head and body movement. This guy generated so much patriotic pride in Panama that when he fell behind with his taxes the Panamanian Government wiped them completely! This goes to show you how highly he is regarded! Sugar Ray Leonard even admitted that he never knew Duran was so quick or that he punched so hard! 120 fights, 104 wins with 69 KOs really says it all. Tell me one 'other new school' fighter has had over 100 fights??? Even 50?? You start calling yourself a 'REAL FIGHTER' once you've had 50+ fights, not 30 with two plastic belts either!!! In 2002, he was chosen by The Ring Magazine to be the 5th greatest fighter of the last 80 years. He held world titles at four different weights! What more could the guy have on his CV in order to make a statement! To sum up Roberto Duran, the guy's a "PURE ANIMAL"! One of the GREATEST!!!!
Roy Jones Jr - he is shot and has achieved everything possible and has already sealed his legacy as a p4p ATG. He has absolutely nothing left to prove and should just hang them up.
Hopkins - sealed his legacy and has nothing left to achieve or prove. HE can no longer fight anywhere near is previous level and is simply too old.
Anthony Mundine - has disgraced himself to the point of no return.
Ruiz - for the good of the world.
Agree with all of the above. Roy Jones is a shell of what he was and he seems to be teaching Mundine well to follow the same path of fighting au pairs, nurses, policemen and posties.
No, what everyone knows is that Peter dominated him in their second fight. Try to stay in touch with reality.
Toney's a former middleweight dude and Peter the big, bad heavyweight was running from him? What kind of BS is that? Toney had him doing the wobbles both fights.
McCline knocked Peter down like a sack of spuds three times. Peter thinks he's a unit beating up on a 50 year old Maskaev who everybody knew didn't stand a chance.
The second Toney v Peter fight shouldn't have gone ahead cos Toney should have been declared UD winner. This loss also robbed Toney more than just a title shot.
It just goes to show you how these 'pissy' politics are ruining one of the best sports in the world. Oh, that's right, didn't the Duva's sell King half their promotion outfit??? As the saying goes, "You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours?"
Toney's in great shape and will be in even be in even better shape come the 16th. Toney will KO Rahman in 9th. Year off would have done him good both physiacally and mentally so he should be refreshed and fully energised to mow down Rahman.
Everybody knows Toney got robbed 'silly' against Peter twice. The first bout was daylight robbery at its best!
James Toney is a natural middle weight, and Yes he has ducked someone, Bernard Hopkins wanted a shot at Toney.. He screamed Toneys name out after one of he's fights a few weeks later toney vacates his tittles and moves up in weight.
Once Toney kicked Jirov's butt it was a near certainty that Hopkins would fight Toney. However, Hopkins came to his senses knowing he'd get owned badly against Toney at 190lbs.
Not sure if anyone watched Hopkins' interview with Fighthype.com? Hopkins says that he wouldn't dream of fighting Sam Peter, the Klitchkos or any of the other Heavy Champs. Hopkins knows he'd get flattened by them. Yet Toney beat Peter up bad in first fight and got robbed silly. The Klitchkos and other ABC Title holders have been ignoring Toney for the best part of 5 years.
