I'm not a Ward fan, dislike the guy. But to say he's unskilled is flat out wrong. He was very skilled and will easily get into HOF. I don't blame him for either of the 2 Kovalev fights.
Kovalev lost the first fight. He was dominating Ward for first few rounds then decided to play his game and fight inside. Ward wanted it that way, but Kovalev was eager to do it. You can see it starting in rnd 4 (I think). Only towards the end is he thinking 'oh crap I'm running low on energy why did I do this'. I don't agree with the decision, he should have won the first one, but it was his own bonehead moves that cost him the fight.
Kov got his ass handed to him in the 2nd fight. Ward was in MUCH better shape and was kicking his ass all over. I don't think Ward intentionally hit him in the nuts, that was a combination of Kov ducking down and being visibly hurt from those shots. Even if there weren't any nutshots, Ward was dominant.
What I do blame Ward for is fighting dirty throughout his career, and getting away with it. Most of his wins will have an asterisk next to them because he always did some shady sht. He was never punished for anything, so in his mind it was more like "Ok, I'm going for a clinch and don't want to be in range, but if I headbutt him, oh well". Or "he's hurt to the body badly! I'm gonna hit it no matter if I hit low accidentally".
I dislike Ward because he's neither a good sportsman, nor a good brawler. Just a very good fighter who was lucky to get a lot of help throughout his career.Comment

what you just described is called wrestling and holding and hitting. its clearly illegal in the rules. i guess its all semantics really. its not wrestling its muscling! also why was henry akwindade dq'd against lewis? seems like he should have a lawsuit on his hands. he was just muscling and clinch fighting. why was wlad docked a point against jennings? etc...etc...Round 2 is a perfect example of how boxing fans often have no idea what they're watching. They think Ward just clinches to spoil, but you can watch him here and he's using the clinch to muscle Kessler around and land punches. Fighting in the clinch has become such a lost art that people have forgotten how a fighter can use the clinch to really put hurt on someone.
Ward was masterful at fighting in the clinch. He would negate the other fighter and position himself to land his own shots. But Ward haters just claim he was doing nothing but foul and spoil.Last edited by daggum; 04-13-2020, 12:07 PM.Comment

I actually looked up the Golovkin-Lara situation to refresh my memory and network affiliations were an issue. GGG was with HBO of course and Lara was with Showtime:Golovkin " helped " his career... by refusing to fight the same caliber of opponent that guys like Ward/Canelo were willing to fight
Canelo had the balls to fight Lara, against the wishes of his promoter... Ward had the balls to rematch Kovalev, against the wishes of his promoter... Golovkin never had the balls to do anything like that... he avoided Lara, and Jacobs/Derevy will never get their rematch

Gennady Golovkin’s promoter explains why he wouldn’t mind fighting Erislandy Lara, but knows that it can’t happen.
Here is the most important quote if you don't wanna read the entire article:
However, there has been one boxer who has at least made an attempt to call out Golovkin. Erislandy Lara, regarded by many as the best junior middleweight in the world, has taken to Twitter to say that he would welcome a fight with Golovkin. Only, of course, there is one big problem with that. Golovkin exclusively fights on HBO when he is televised in the United States. Lara works for Golden Boy which only works with Showtime when it comes to premium cable in the US.
Managing Director of K2 Promotions Tom Loeffler, who handles Golovkin, had this to say on the matter, via Boxing Scene's Jake Donovan:
"It's well known that Gennady Golovkin - when he fights in the United States - is under exclusive contract with HBO. Lara is with Golden Boy and fights on Showtime. So while he is a great fighter for whom we have a tremendous amount of respect, the bottom line is that HBO is our biggest strategic partner and it's up to his promoter to get him accepted by HBO.
"The strange thing is that his name really never came up. His insistence took us by surprise. It's not that Gennady doesn't want to fight him - he'll fight anyone and continues to prove that. But we were looking at fighters who we know can and will fight on HBO."
Take from that what you will but I just wanted to provide some context. If anything I think Demetrius Andrade has more of a case for being ducked than Lara does because GGG and Andrade both fight on DAZN.Comment

I would never claim Ward never just wrestled and grappled, but in the round I mentioned that's not really what Ward did. He got inside, a clinch happened, but where Ward differs is that he knows how to fight in the clinch and that's what he did to Kessler. Most fighters stop fighting in the clinch or only use it to get a break. Ward actually fights. When Kessler just wants to wait for the clinch to be over, or expects nothing but a clinch, Ward is still positioning and fighting. Sometimes Ward would move inside, Kessler would expect the clinch, and Ward would punch him in the face.what you just described is called wrestling and holding and hitting. its clearly illegal in the rules. i guess its all semantics really. its not wrestling its muscling! also why was henry akwindade dq'd against lewis? seems like he should have a lawsuit on his hands. he was just muscling and clinch fighting. why was wlad docked a point against jennings? etc...etc...
Honestly, it's something that used to be much more common. Fighters didn't use to accept clinches like they do now. They used to gain position, clamp arms, muscles fighters, and keep throwing punches. That kind of clinch fighting was a skill all its own, it's something Duran was spectacular at.Comment

dont take these people seriously. they just make things up. they think as memory fades they can make up their own history. they are even saying ggg ducked saunders now lol. there are other articles where lara says i will fight ggg if htey give me millions. keep in mind this was when willie monroe was making like 150k so yeah thats just silliness, not to mention the network complications, not to mention they werent in the same division, not to mention if ggg had fought lara "hes picking on smaller fighters" the same thing they said about rosado and brook.I actually looked up the Golovkin-Lara situation to refresh my memory and network affiliations were an issue.
