Why was Mayweather jab so poor against Ortiz?

Because he wasn't throwing it with much intent, generally the rear hand is most affective against southpaws and it was working for Floyd, so it just seemed he used his jab as more of a measuring stick and a distraction.Comment

Good points.
It must also be true for soutpaws when facing orthadox fighters.Comment

exactly, he was pawing the jab out there to measure distance and distract victor as he came with the right hand behind it, couldn't have said it better myselfComment

From what I remember as well there were times when he was just flicking it put for the sake of it, sorta just to keep busy and keep Ortiz on the back foot.Comment

More truth than any other post. An Orthodox's jab is significantly less effective against a southpaw while the right-cross is significantly more.there are many theories why his jab connect rate was so poor
my guess after watching the fight a few times now, he was fighting a southpaw and was simply using his jab as a range finder for his right hand
if you're being objective you can clearly see Floyd was going for the KO in this fight, hence the amount of power shots he threw
floyd was using his jab differently than he normally does which usually is to score points
Mayweather fought more like Pacquiao does, feels out with the jab, lands the cross at will.Comment

Ortiz landed 0 of 31 jabs.
He was countering Ortiz almost at will with left hooks & straight rights.
Floyd left his jab out there as a distraction for the straight right & to step in with a left hook to the body which is very effective against southpaws.Comment

Do you think the compubox stats can give a false impression on how good someone jab was in a fight. Because if they are just flicking it out, using as a range finder and feinting, it will be doing it's intended job but compubox will count it as a miss.Comment
