Two wins over Ezzard Charles and Two wins over Jersey Joe Walcott. Floyd could fight till he is 50 and not come close to topping that.
Better legacy. Marciano or Mayweather Jr?

Good post as always Bat.Marciano. He was HW champion back in the day that there only was one champ pr. division. He obviously dominated and retired undefeated with 49 wins.
Mayweather retired 39-0 and has held a string of alphabet titles before retiring in hi prime as the recognised WW champion.
Trouble for me is the retiring part. Marciano retired at 33 when no obvious challengers was around with a body spent from the rigorous training camps. Rocky was in camp 9 months a year.
Floyd retired at 30. At the peak of his powers and several deserving challengers loomed in the horizon. Of course one can say that Floyd has earned his right to do so and of course he has, but that will definetely harm his legacy.Comment

You really couldnt be any more wrong. I have never said Mayorga was great. I never said Calzaghe was god and I really dont even post about him. You seem to post alot about him tho, wonder why?
I never said Mayweather was garbage, hes just not ATG. Its simple as that.
Never said Marciano was the best heavyweight ever but he ranks higher than Mayweather on the ATG list. (check the poll and boxing historians)
You mean little, and you act like a child. Go back to calling people ****sucker because they they know what their talking about.Comment

As of now, definitely Marciano. If Floyd came back for a couple years and succeeded in taking out the best then I would say Mayweather. But he has yet to reach that point.Comment

Is 31 to 24 reasonable? How about the boxing almanac of boxing historians?
You come up with "hate" any time anyone disagrees with you. You need to watch that or your the one who will become ridiculous and unreasonable.Comment

I knew Marciano would win this POLL
Some guys just think that Rocky was greater and i respect that ( Even if i dont agree with it )
But lets be honest here guys, most people are voting AGAINST Mayweather NOT FOR Marciano . Its more name the guys Floyd hasn't fought rather than the guys Marciano fought as to why Marciano is winning the poll.
NSB is turning into a Mayweather and Calzaghe hate board more and more as the days go by. It is also turning into a place to for people to overrate and suck Pacs **** ( And i'm a Pac fan )Comment

Three reasons why i consider Floyd the greater fighter. He moved up several weight divisions to win his titles, he fought better opponents and the fighters he fought were more in their prime.Comment

But who did Marciano beat that was in their prime and a heavy threat?
In fact, has he ever faced a LEGIT 200+ pound HW threat or were they all under that?
Mayweather has held lineal titles which thankfully you just brought this up because it justifies Floyd's decision to fight Baldomir at 147.
And, the Mob allegations will always leave a stain on Marciano's resume.
It's arguable if Floyd retired at his peak or prime since I count them slightly different. Floyd has serious hand issue and possible other injuries that are wearing him out so how is that at your peak? He obviously retired for a number of reasons and one of those might have been because he was fed up with boxing after devoting his life to it.
Marciano did have one fighter on the horizon: Floyd Patterson.
And if we look at where Marciano won the title at, what was it, 42 fights about?Last edited by Benny Leonard; 12-24-2008, 07:08 AM.Comment

Getting a title is definetely easier today than it was in the old days. Back in the day you could almost always be certain that the champion was the baddest man on the planet. It isn't like that today. Baldomir was probably never considered the best even by the most fanatic and he held the linear title. Same as nobody would say Zsolt Erdei is the best LHW.But who did Marciano beat that was in their prime and a heavy threat?

The era of Marciano wasn't the best of times for the HW's that's right, but he still beat Charles, Walcott (who both had a lot left)and several no. 1 contenders (I think ****ell and more were no.1). Of course Joe Louis wasn't the force he was in his championship years, but he had still racked up 8-10 straight wins before Marciano ended his career.
Patterson wasn't a force at the time Rocky retired. There was definetely no public outcry for Rocky to fight him before retirering since Patterson fought at LHW back then. We all know Mayweather had Cotto, Margarito and unfinished business with Oscar.Comment
