You can talk about extremes at one end of the spectrum and pretend it means something, good for you. Like i said to someone else, we can include all the baseball players who play for poor leagues and say the majority of pro ball players are poor. Many average and unknown fighters make a living boxing, I don't know why you expect some cab driver with boxing gloves to make 50 million dollars. It's an individual sport, it's harder to make it, this is true for every individual sport. That fact has no bearing on boxing being a major sport and a thriving sport.
    - - Ham and egger journeymen fill every major card in boxing and don't make squat.

Obviously you make the grave error of misrepresenting Evolution which takes centuries to unfold in physiological changes. In spite of 5000 years of written history, laws, ect alloyed with modern supercomputers now introducing artificial Intelligence into the workforce and business practices, modern mankind cannot create a Stonehenge using the existing technology of the day much less the pyramids.

What was needed in Ray's time for a star boxer that he was, was a strong offense, ie A FIGHT, but a fight with the science of boxing offense and self defence. l'l floydy wif his grrly hands and squallin' baby dependence on his daddy would be pushing a broom in Sugar's Gym at best.

Read it and weep, son. Your boy an artificially produced mirage. Why you think he keeps a litteral TON of Beefsters on his security detail? He's a Sissy's sissy and he knows it...

Ironically the UFC might help with that problem.

Their fans are willing to embrace a "champion" with multiple loses. Undefeated doesn't seem important to their mind set. Maybe that will rub off onto boxing with this next generation.

IMO Television in the 1980s with its obsession with championship fights only, and their relationship with the scantioning bodies rankings created the "0" mentality.
It's how it always has been until Mayweather. When these guys take a loss they're mentally never the same. Imagine Tank losing right now. He'd be all screwed up. I don't think Haney as much but it would still affect him significantly.

Lol. Dramatic but accurate right down the line. Another gem. A triumphant return to quality contribution . Will it last? Nahhhh.
        Still, welcome back.

        • Metrics for measurement:
          Public polling (See links provided)
          Gross international revenue
          Total worldwide newspaper print (Archaic)
Internet top 10 sites traffic worldwide
          Top 5 annual salary average
          Total annual salary average
          Historic value (Applied formula)

You find "bigger" sports regionally, such as NBA, NFL, MLB in the US, Futball, Rugby, Cricket in the British Commonwealth, or Curling in Canada.
International measures, however, as acknowledged by a percent of the world's 8 billion inhabitants? Most don't give a **** what an NFL quarterback makes, or even know what his job is in that sport.
.....They mostly all know Muhammad Ali though. Pele, Jordan, Ruth, Ronaldo, Brown, Maradona, Woods, Brady, Federer, Gretzky, Thorp, Etc. Less so.

It's a measurement of something that you can bend to your liking.
Boxing is a clean, upright and dignified fight. The rules as each of the great historical cultures admired the most, distinguished from a weaponry assault (or a dirty fight). It's here to stay. It's thriving, still setting new records. So relax.

            Warning: Pointless Digression

I taught high school in a very culutrally mixed system, a virtual United Nations.

There was an episode of Seinfeld, with its usual cultural and lite racial humor, where the cast couldn't find a taxi because all the Pakistani cab drivers were home watching the World Cup.

One of my Pakistani students pointed out to me that the joke didn't really made sense to her.

While Soccer is popular, the actual Super Bowl of Pakistan is when Pakistan plays India in cricket.

That's when no one shows up to work, not for the World Cup. World Cup/soccer is no where as important to Pakistan than cricket. Pakistan vs. India in cricket shuts down both countries.

Point of of this pointless digression --> soccer is the dominate international sport but cricket is amazingly, considerably, more popular world wide than we Americans can even begin to realize. So much so, that Sienfeld pulled off a good/rude cultural joke about the New York City taxi system and who the cabbies are, but they assumed the wrong sport.

                • Who are the great cultural boxing heroes? I'm not talking about just being popular I'm talking about being loved!

For Italians it truly was Marciano.**

My first thought was there can't be a Black fighter because there are just too many great black boxers.

Then I realized. No! Joe Louis did reach that level of love. I don't think any other black fighter ever reached that level again.

But who are the other cultural icon boxers?

Not the same level as Louis, but Ray Leonard was loved by all for the first 8 years or so of his career.

                      - - Joe very understated personality was perfect for upsetting the status quo in boxing. Cassius Clay was never beloved, nor in the beginning Ali until the Vietnam issue won him the anti Vietnam War college crowd that only grew after the Supremes ruling.

Looking at l'l floydy today, obviously a PPV magnet after a tortuous start whereas Manny was on instant PPV as soon as Arum got him. Ali and Manny could wade into a crowd and get mobbed in love. l'l floydy can't hardly be seen in public without a ton of beefsters he has on permanent payroll, a couple he even used so he could beat up Baby Mama while they held the two kids in place for the spectacle. Seems his manhood and ego are quite fragile compared to Manny or Ali.
