But.....Weaver WAS the WBA champ after Holmes KOd him in spectacular fashion as though he'd been shot. And Weaver went on to be one of the few anti Popes to actually make a title defense. "You can't fight Joe Frazier every 4 months" - Muhammad Ali.
I submit that after Ali; Holmes, Tyson, Holyfield, Lewis, Wladimir, Vitali, Fury, Wilder and Joshua all took Ali's advice.
Just sayin'.
Weaver became the WBA champ after KOing Big John Tate who had traveled to South Africa to outpoint Coatzee, taking that lucrative fight that Lar ducked.
Thanks for the reminder!!!

John Tate was a US Olympic Medalist with more gravitas to speak politically, and he spoke to the South African populace with his fists.
Lar never made the Olympic team after getting beat up and knocked out by Duane Bobick who also won an Olympic medal. Everything spewing from Lar is about his insecurity, not the betterment of mankind...

I don't care how you personally feel about Holmes, I just want to know when he could have fought the conveyor belt of WBA titlists that couldn't hold on to a belt? If someone believes in something it doesn't matter if they're newsworthy or a political figure. That is called integrity. Something you obviously know nothing about.
But most promoters usually threw there lot in with one scantioning body or the other. Negating the possibility of a unifaction bout.
I know King had Holmes under contract but does anyone know which promoters were handling the various WBA champions during that period? Did King ever have contract control over both fighters?

There were a half dozen WBA champs in Lar's title years, ie a half dozen chances to sign to fight them, and nary a single attempt was ever made to my knowledge though their was a slapstick arrangement with King to have him fight Coetzee after he upset Doke's Homecoming. By that time the $$$ had disappeared behind Gerrie and King wouldn't invest his own, so the fight was just a phantasm in fight history.
