it's also important to note that Schmeling was a 3-1 underdog and Louis was on a long string of victories. He self admittedy underestimated Schmeling and I believe him based on 2 reasons:

1: he iced him in the rematch - one sidedly

2: he was beating Schmeling handily early on - and Schmeling almost feigned like he was fading - then out of nowhere landed a howitzer on Louis jaw. He landed flush and Louis could never recover. It was this just as much as his Cross over the jab counter he always brings up. Louis totally underestimated him.

Tunney is good enough to beat Louis - but if I had to bet prime for prime for all the Marbles I edge Louis to get Tunney. Louis jab is too good Tunney would lose a decision I believe.

yet but tons didn't fight on the big stage for the world to see. The stage was small back then and Jack Johnson left a sour taste in everyones mouth. just read biographies on these guys - some of them were totally not racist - it would be a travesty to call them a racist beyond the grave when they cannot defend themselves.

No, it's justice. Upholding the system while claiming no personal responsibility has been the calling card of the racist since the day they lost their race war.

Andrew Jackson claimed he never agreed with slavery he only did it because he thought that's what God wanted. Not a racist? Just a Christian man in a time when he could be confused? Louis is not a shuffling slow footed man. Hes an extremely agile man who is hiding his speed with short smooth movements. They called him the panther. He creeped up on you and when he let his shots go you couldnāt even see them. Thats how he registered these legitimate knockouts. Blackburn was a master and taught him this style

When matched vs. guys who had decent to great feet and a decent to great jab, Louis' shuffling feet struggled to catch up and was down on the collective scorecards on Schmeling, Conn, Charles ( okay Louis was 36 here but active ) and Walcott despite having an advantage in size.

Shuffilin' Joe I saw was gift wrapped a win on the score cards vs Wallcot, and would have LOST at least one fight to these men on the modern 10 point must score system for 12 rounds!

And Louis did not fight any swarming types. Did he fight any Southpaws? Nope. And Eastern Europeans fighters which have been as a group on top of the heavyweight division for the past 20 years? No again.

But we have hashed this out already.

You can't really find black opponents who can claim they were grossly overlooked, or ducked by Louis.

Louis had five White HW Champions to KO, he did (5-1) in six fights. My God, what's a 'color boy to do.'

The money backers where not big on black-black fights, the color line still dominated the South and West. Even with Louis's rise in 1933, was still hard in the 1930s.

Before the Louis-Baer fight, the announcer lectured the audience on racism, for a solid five minutes. Lots of 'may the best man win' and 'clean sport' pleases! were shoveled at the audience.

Unnecessarily I might add. You can hear on the radio broadcast that the audience was all in. But the week's leadup to the fight, in the newspapers, had not been.

If it was racism it was systemic; it showed at the gate more than in the public eye.

It was Louis following the money.
