  • After beating Sharkey ,Jeffries defended against no hoper Finnegan 4-2-4 and Corbett who had not won a fight for 6 years.
Jeffries reneged on his promise to give Sharkey the next chance at his title after their second fight....

  • Why do you keep making that idiotic remark? It has no relevance to anything.

I don't have hate for any boxer, you do,and Jack Johnson is your prime target, you made this thread a while ago and got a desultory response then, why would you think it necessary to make it again?

  • Sharkey was not an aging ex champ coming out of retirement, neither was he a white stumble bum he was the number 1 contender having beaten both the men,[ Corbett and Ruhlin,] Jeffries subsequently defended against inside the distance. Do try and keep up!...

  • William Muldoon of the NYAC made appropriate noises in favour of the fight, but privately did not want it.
We will probably never know the full extent of the Machiavellian machinations that went on behind closed doors regarding a Wills v Dempsey fight.
My gut feeling is Rickard himself did...

  • Jeffries retired because he could not make any more money fighting old, white ,ex champs of the previous era coming out of retirement for a pay day,and white stumble bums for gimmee defences, and he was not prepared to risk his title by fighting the best of the black contenders.
    You really should...

  • Tunney had no intention of fighting Wills, who had already qualified for a title shot by winning two eliminators, and he knew Wills would not chance a fight with him whilst he himself was in pole position for a title shot, why should he?
Who deserved a title chance, more Wills or Tunney?
    Which...

  • People wanted the fight? Is that why Jeffries purse for the fight was less than half what he got for defending against Sharkey?
Bottom line, Jeffries chose a man whom Sharkey had beaten up in his previous fight which was a year and a half previously....

  • Stop with the lies! Jeffries said in the event of Johnson winning ,which he expected him to do, he would not fight him.

  • You wanted black ranked challengers Godfrey was ranked.Tunney didn't really have any intention of fighting Wills and Harry had already won the eliminator to fight Dempsey, but was by passed. Tunney could have fought Kid Norfolk when they were both ranked at Lhvy in the early 20's....

  • So according to you a man who hasnt won a fight for 6 years, and that victory being over a man weighing 165lbs, deserves a title shot because he was champion those 6 years earlier?
A title shot in front over the 2 men who had most beaten him, in his most recent two fights one a light heavyweight...

  • Jeffries made his last defence on 26th of August 1904 against no hoperJack Munroe,it was a financial flop.
Johnson did not fight Hart until the 26th of March 1905..Jeffries had already publicly stated that, if Johnson won he would not fight him....

  • You stated Sharkey went into a quick decline after the Jeffries fight

.I proved he didn't,he won 5 fights on the trot ,all by stoppage, including wins over Goddard and Choynski. All in1900.
Tom Sharkey had beaten both Ruhlin and Corbett in1898.
Tell us what Corbett had done...
