  • Two Ton Toney Galento versus Marciano... Who wins?

I find this match up more interesting than perhaps many members here shall. We usually look at Marciano from the perspective of the one who would walk through a river of fire, and take any more such punishment, en route to victory. Galento is a fellow tough guy. He had his own aptitude to take a licking and keep ticking.

What if Galento could take Marciano's shots? Galento had an underrated left hook and could brawl inside with the best of them... This is a guy who Max Bauer made look like a punching bag, but alas managed to floor the great Joe Louis. Galento also had size... It is not obvious, his weight was average for a heavyweight, but his legs are gigantic and he had heavy hands. While Galento was very hittable, he had all the attributes of a big, strong heavy weight regarding his Left Hook.

Galento also was stout... Marciano could not come from under like he preferred to do... Galento would be eye to eye and had no problem fighting ugly, including on the inside...

I think this would be an interesting contest. I could see Galento at least flooring Marciano, and possibly even winning If Marciano did not find a way to neutralize the hook.

Is this a bad "styles make fights" premonition that could spell problems for Marciano? Thoughts?

Stylistically this makes Marciano struggle and not look as good, but there are levels & Rock is levels above. Also, Marciano's defense was better than Galento's and I feel like for every clean punch Galento lands Rock lands two.

My joke answer was gonna be that the fight is called after both men continually headbutt each other while leaping in and clinching.

When you see Two Ton Tony for the first time he turns out to be a better boxer than one expects.

I can see him putting Marciano on the canvas and even expect he might, early.

I think in the end Two Ton can't go the way Walcott or Moore went with Marciano, (footwork and angles) and will quickly be forced to trade with him.

Tony could throw bombs, but to borrow from H.L. Mencken, describing Dempsey's punches:

'Marciano's punches were not big, wide, fashly punches, that made a popping sound when they landed, (which excites the crowd,) but were short punches that landed with a thump, like a ferry boat b-anging against a wooden dock. You could feel the thud at ringside, not hear it.'

With Galento standing in front of him, Marciano breaks Two Ton Tony down by the sixth round, if not sooner.

Why is the word "b-ang" censored?

Tony might score a KD but Rocky would gradually dominate this with his work rate.He would also be in the rather unaccustomed position of being the taller and faster man.It certainly would not be a scientific battle of the jabs, more a close up, foul filled ,thudding brawl.

Both men were prone to cuts, but Marciano's superior conditioning would see him win this as Galento's tank is emptied in the latter stages of the contest.
A Computer Box Count Of The Fouls Would Be Interesting.

My joke answer was going to be the fight is stopped when all the local blood banks run out after trying to keep both men supplied.

I think you're right except for one thing. I think that galento hook is a monster. I really wonder how Rocky would take that to the chops.

Lol, Yes a foul count! I do think conditioning is big. I think Tony was better conditioned than people thought however, he did not have the conditioning of Marciano. Marciano has a very big advantage in this respect.

And yes like all the other things that get turned around here Marciano is probably more defensively responsible by a good margin than Tony.

Again, I just wonder about that left hook because he had an incredibly good punch there... And I'm trying to think of when Marciano ever dealt with a hooker. I know he never dealt with a gigantic heavyweight and galenta is not gigantic, he's a big boy compared to whom Marciano fought on the regular.

PS. I'm hoping one of you guys in the section does me proud and does not let me get away with that hooker remark without a pun, some quip based on Rocky's history outside the ring.

                - - Retired Jack Dempsey jumped into the ring in street clothes after Two Ton Tony started badmouthing him and promptly KOed him.

I think Galento would take a lot of punishment but ultimately been ineffective himself. For 2 reasons.

Marciano is extremely disciplined and gets stronger as the fight goes on. Galento is the opposite. So while Marciano get’s stronger Galento naturally gets weaker compounding the effect.

Galento is tricky but not skillful. He has tricks that worked well against taller guys, he would crouch much like Marciano does forcing the taller guy to punch down and lower himself, making them vulnerable for a leaping attack which is what Galento did. With his low center of gravity it works well.

against Marciano its an inside fight with Marciano beating him up bad throughout the fight, rearranging his face. Especially with them both being Italian I see Galentos mouthy attitude getting him in serious trouble. Thats my take.

Oh my another unsubstantiated claim from the king of palabrum. I'm guessing you have lots of sources for this alleged incident that you just won't share out of matter of principle. That principle being your a gin soaked idiot.
