Like I said, the reason is irrelevant. He didn’t want to fight Cocoa Kid and that’s why he turned it down on two seperate occasions.

He signed to fight him in May of 49, and didn’t turn up to the arena. So what are we talking about here? Why sign to fight him and then not fight him? Because he didn’t want the fight obviously.

Its not a knock, some fights just don’t happen.

Mayweather didn’t fight Margarito, he fought Baldomir and Judah who were ranked higher than him, he even fought Mosley who knocked him out, but he still didn’t want that fight with Margarito.

This is Boxing, fighters rarely get everyone and often turn fighters down for whatever reason.

    Robinson turned down Cocoa Kid.
On Jan14th 1944 Cocoa Kid who was in the Navy was placed in a Hospital for a month ,back on duty for a short while then placed in a
Hospital for the remainder of his service.Honourably discharged his medial notes read Diagnosis Dementia Pugilistica.
In1943 now a middleweight,he had wins over a journeyman a draw with Holman Williams and a great win over Jack Chase, then he lost to Aaron Wade.

In his next fight ,on24th Nov 1944 the Kid took a dive against Oakland Billy Smith ,his $600 purse was forfeited and he was never allowed to fight in California again.
Archie Moore knocked him cold in7 rds,
Bert Lytell was killing him until the Kids trainer stopped it in the 6th.
Now to the part that will interest you.Robinson signed to fight Gene Burton but the fight was cancelled when it came to light Burton was suspended in another state.
The promoter of the proposed fight then reached an agreement for Robinson to fight the now retired Kid on August the 17th 1949.Robinson never showed up.
The Commissioner recommended that Robinson be suspended until he fulfiilled the contract or reimbursed the promoter.
Robinson agreed to fight the Kid on May24th but did not turn up for that fight either.
The Kid was now 35 and relegated to earning a living as a sparring partner.
In the summer of 1949 the Kid sparred with Robinson in New Jersey during which session he knocked Robinson down with a right hand.
You were entirely correct on both your statements!
What remains a mystery is why, after agreeing to fight him twice Robinson did not fulfill either date?

Basora the no 4 th ranked Middle ,to a draw.
McDaniels the number 4th ranked Welter.
      Dellicurti the no 10. Middle.

NB from 1943 onwards there are no MURDERERS ROW fighters featured at Welterweight in the top ten end of year rankings !
Wasn't Costner considered a top shelf talent gong into their 1945 bout? 6ft tall, dangerous.

And he would make more for a re-match if the first fight was close or he lost.
Why don't you post figures and dates refuting my posts?
All we have had from you so far is your own personal opinion!

Well, yeah, that's the question isn't it.

Like previously mentioned and now adknowledged, turned it down once, signed to fight him the second time and didn't turn up.

Why? Who knows why but the fact remains that he turned it down in one way or another multiple times.

You're the best poster on here for my money mate. It's rare that I learn new things considering how long I've been watching boxing but with your posts I do.

                Great discussion.

Coming from a poster I respect I take that as a real compliment! Thank You.

Why don't you accept the facts? They are not an opinion! SRR did not fight the murders row, a talented group of fighters raging from welter to middle or Archie Moore. When he did fight talented black man in Turpin he was 1-1, and cut both times. And he would fight a middle when he was a welter. See Jake LaMotta.

All you do is post garbage that he would fight easier marks and list the rankings of the times which are not exactly fair to the black man. In hindsight we see they were HOF fighters in may cases.

He avoided him! Plain and simple. Just like he avoided Moore and Burley. Facts need not apply to Ivich.
