This is the purpose of history and having a history section that talks about the "long view." A fighter is never completely evaluated, but as history progresses, there comes a point where perspective is the best it is ever going to be. Meanwhile we get a pendulum swing... Holmes for a long time was swinging from the pendulum... "pinheaded copy of Ali" "greatest Jab" which is it? lol.

Tyson was a bull out of the gate. Was going to be the new model for heavyweights... paired down, no socks... brutal with a lisp just to make it interesting... so scary opponents went down before the bell...

He cleaned out the division in the late 80s but it was a weak era. Unlike Wlad and Larry his run was short. He beat Larry Holmes coming out of retirement. He beat Michael Spinks in impressive fashion but Spinks is a all time great light heavyweight, not heavyweight.

He got upset by Buster Douglas and save me with the "Past his prime" talk cause he was 23.

He had some good wins after and regained the title but lost his career defining fight with Evander Holyfield.... TWICE.

He had some decent wins after but never got the title back.

He's extremely overrated, especially by casuals who say he's the best heavyweight ever .He's not even the best heavyweight of his era. Evander Holyfield is.

And this whole "Prime Tyson beats anyone ever head to head" is nonsense. No he wouldn't.

He had one mode. No ability to adjust. He's a Cus Damato pre programmed robot.
You aint wrong about him being overated. I agree with all your points. I will say this though, Tyson pretty much got addicted to coke as soon as he got his first pay day. And this is probably the reason his “prime” ended.

we never actually did see Tyson in his best form vs another great heavy. Tysons aura comes from how promising and dominating he was against c and b class competition, I think most people assumed he would do good against the very best. Problem is we never saw it.

but if we look at fighters w coke problems they all seem to come out the gate hot early in their careers then sort of stagnate and fade off badly.

            - -Sound like one of them spec miners in the hills barreling into town with a bag full of fools gold trying to buy up the town.

The timeline is irrevocable. After the core of his HOF team passed, R.I.P. and DKing and Givens tag teamed him along with convenient psychiatrists putting him on daily Zoloft dosage, he was kaput city with a series of 3 ring circuses in his corner as he became a 4 round circus sideshow better'n any other main event as far as the public was concerned.

Was U in diapers then not to know this?

Tyson also made another bad decision he later admitted to, which is listening to Don King, who somehow not only convinced him to take him on as a manager, but to get rid of Kevin Rooney, who always had Tyson prepared and at his best every time out. You can see Tyson's decline begin after the Spinks fight, which is the last time Tyson and Rooney worked together. If Tyson stays with Rooney, I could see him fighting a classic trilogy with Holyfield, with Tyson winning 1 by either late TKO or decision.

This is the only section worth posting on - NSB is either just a reprint of news you can get elsewhere or is a collection of self proclaimed experts who are almost always wrong or a bunch of fan boys who post bias misinformation.

The interesting conversations occur here, by knowledgeable posters steeped in history. Post here more often we often bring a historical bent to the current fights.
