  • 'I had him along the ropes, he had his head down and I was really measuring him. His head popped up and he let go a left hook that almost tore through my stomach. It hurt so much, I had tears in my eyes, like a little kid. I got the decision, but I learned that Jake LaMotta was some animal.'

Many fighters say that about themselves but with Duran it seems to ring true.

      • Two interesting quotes more than a century apart.

'The preliminary to all bouts is the handshake, and should never be omitted. Bear in mind that you are not going to engage in mortal combat. Boxing should train the mind as it develops the body, and the young man who loses his head or temper should indulge in some other branch or sport. A clear, quick brain is as necessary in a boxing contest as gloves are.'

        - James J Corbett
'You've got to have the right attitude, you've got to have the right mentality, always be confident but remain humble. Be aggressive in the ring but still have your wits about you and be cautious, and that's the way the approach has got to be in life.'

        - Ricky Hatton

--Sam Langford declining Joe Jennette's wish that they fight over a longer distance. Love the honest respect that is shown here. "Real recognize real."

          • "The public put a label on me as a dirty fighter, but I never lost a fight on a foul in my life. I'd give 'em the head, choke 'em, hit 'em in the balls, but never in my life used my thumb because I wanted no one to use it on me. But they accused me of that. I used to **** 'em pretty good. You're fighting, you're not playing the piano, you know." ~ Fritzie Zivic

Interesting aside: Oscar Wilde wrote a fabulous short story about a very talented guy who had two distinct talents: He was an idiot Savant x2, a virtuossa Violinist, and a crushing Pugalist. He had to determine which course to follow because his hands, would ultimately onlybe able to do one of these talents full bore. So Mr Zivic, maybe I am playing the piano! lol.
