I dont think the catchweights is as much of a problem when it helps to create a mega fight betweem two evenly matched guys at different but congruent weight devisions. But when catchweight is used to give some legitimacy to an otherwise very visible mismatch, just to make it appear as even fight when it is not, say for example a supermiddleweight prime Roy Jones Decided to fight prime or not so prime welterweight Oscar De La Hoya at 160, then there is a problem in the eyes of some. Looking at the concept of catchweight instead of the actual circumstances is giving a ligitimacy where it should not be given.
How do you feel about heavyweights? There's no cap on that but Klitschko beat Chagaev in a championship bout THIS year outweighing over 20lbs. That's not an advantage? Haye will fight Valuev, and will weigh 215ish, while Valuev has come over 300lbs. That's not an advantage? Why is it acceptable for heavyweights, but we get so much flack for 2lbs in Pac Cotto fight. Ridiculous.
Cotto stans need to let it go, this is a great fight and both fighters will be fine at 145.
I like this guys thoughts:
"Wladimir Klitschko outweighed Ruslan Chagaev by almost 20 lbs in their heavyweight title fight but we won’t hear much of that since that division, unlike the lighter classes, does not parade a number that’s tied to the division (147, 154, 160, etc.) so we hear less of it. Later this year when David Haye battles Nico Valuev, their weight disparity will almost be in the triple digits. Haye tipped the scales at 215 when he ousted heavyweight gate-keeper Monte Barrett. Valuev, on the other hand, has been as high as 349 pounds on the scales."

Add in Diaz vs. Malinaggi at 138.5 this freakin month on 8/22. A feather fisted Paulie is coming down weight into a fight stacked against him in Houston vs. Baby Bull but I don't hear the outrage for Paulie.
He's a great ambassador for the sport, and is a big part of bringing back to mainstream.
His fights always deliver, his body of work consistently has shown he takes on the best, and the bigger the challenge the higher he rises to the occassion. He's not unbeatable, but who is, and I wouldn't pick more than a small handful of people to beat him (with caveats). Pacquiao beat who he beat because is the REAL deal, and it takes a special prize fighter to de-pants someone in front of whole world like ODLH or Hatton and expose them for who they are. That's what great fighters do.
He may be non American, but his gee aw shucks "I'm just doing my job, it's nothing personal" is all-american, mom and apple pie type stuff. In a bear market recession where financial markets crashed and people have lost their jobs, a lot of people have been humbled and people are just generally more conservative. The whole bling bling attitude gots to get mine Ocho Cinco or Mayweather attitude is so 2005. He's just like Oscar and PBF, at his core he's a good dude, but people will always find faults with him. I think he's right man for time.
The physical advantages will shorten for PWill, though he still has a crazy reach advantage but Pavlik will get inside enough times and eventually put him down.
Gonna be the greatest HBO 24-7 ever. The press conferences are gonna be comedy gold and straight out of Borat, and make you go "WTF?" Unlike DLH and Hatton, Pac's gonna be first guy that Floyd doesn't get under skin. The cross cultural differences will be surreal. Floyd is gonna be straight out thug with the wife beater shirt and cap, and all that is gonna fly over Pac's head who will just smile and laugh along with Floyd. Floyd is gonna be showing off ridiculous stacks of hunnies on his kitchen table, and then HBO cuts to Pacquiao setting up a $26 million dollar economic zone in Philippines that has a cancer treatment center and retirement village which Pacquiao is personally funding out of his own pocket. Are u kidding me?
This fight is a marketing DREAM.
I'm off the bandwagon. Marley was right, he should move his training camp to Big Bear or somewhere else if he's serious about being a prizefighter. He's a big fish in a small pond in Youngstown.
I lost respect for Roach. He's quoted as saying Marg should be banned for life, now he wants to train him? Didn't Rashad Holloway tell him Marg busted his orbital? Isn't that guy one of his best sparring guys? I put this right up there with him training mma guys.....pffft
Didn't someone do a count, and Hatton averaged something like 20 clinches a round vs. Lazcano? That's at least more than double the average fighter, and just gamesmanship to take that away.
Trainers typically make 10% off the fight, right? So Ricky is guarenteed at least $12 million of which Joy should cash 1.2 million. That's for 10-12 weeks or little over 2 months. 2 months of work, and he reportedly shows up late for more than one session? I don't know about you guys but I know ton people left and right who are being laid off nowadays. This guy's at Taco Bell in first 24 7 . Hatton and his team have been in this game a long time, and are the cream of the UK boxing scene. I don't blame Lee Beard and co. if they think he's a wanker.
This is all about the legal definition of assault with a deadly weapon which Bob should know since he's a lawyer.
Safety of the fighters is the #1 priority.
Jackass.
They all suck.
But it's the legal definition of assault of a deadly weapon which makes loaded gloves worse. If someone died, they can be trial for manslaughter.
Steroids is cheating just the same, premeditated just the same, but you can't be tried for manslaughter for cycling but you can for putting a foreign object.
It sucks, but that's the way it is.
Pacquiao style if frenetic and not textbook many times, but there is method behind that madness. Pacquiao is a very saavy fighter and a long time vet, and his offensive fighting style and variety in which he delivers his punches is more sophisticated than Gato can ever attempt to understand.
My guess is Gato was clowning like this video (about 1:10 and 2:30min in).
The "odd angles" he was giving was probably just too crude, really freelancing, and he was likely being a punk... just like this video.
My guess is Gato lacks any sophistication, and thinks being "wild" is emulating Manny Pacquiao because that's all he's capable of, but couldn't be further than truth. Pacquiao will give you the biz, but it's a controlled aggression, with specific moves, behind a gameplan and he's shown to be very patient in picking and choosing spots.
That's not preparing Cotto.
Get his ass outta there, and Cotto doesn't need to give a reason or not, it's his camp.
Get off your ****ing pulpit, and stop patting yourself on back as if some boxing purist.
You wish they'd just get fight over with?
You're sick of it already?
Maybe you should give yourself a break and stop posting everyday, and it might not affect you as much.
Congrats on turning a positive thread, into your own personal bullshit.
Overall good for boxing.
Don't forget, DLH is also getting jump to sign future fighters for GBP.
Personally, think great business strategy, and can't knock em even if they are evil empire.
This is how they should use influence. Boxing is really deficient at local level, tho, and where like to see them get involved next. There's no boxing gyms, quality training, etc. across America. That's where I would like to see them putting efforts.
Buying Ring Mag and using as propaganda is where they turn me off..
He cut his teeth at 126-130 fighting MAB, EM and JMM all of whom I consider better boxers than Cotto.
IMO, that was THE division of the decade. These are not one off fights either that other boxers can say. He's had a Trilogy, and faced the other two TWICE. That's a lot of big fight experience with the best, and that little dude is more sophisticated than you think. Pacquiao is a very disciplined fighter. He still high energy, but fights in controlled spurts now. Moving up he's had to change style since guys are a lot bigger, and discovered his feet. It's funny seeing JM and Pac move up. JM is changing a little to more offensive, and Pac is rounding out more defensively.
Cotto is a very good boxer himself, but is he any better than MAB? The difference is Cotto combines very good boxing skills, and strength which Pac has never seen before.
How is Guzman the future if he is already 30 years old? Not hating, just saying he's already 4 months older than Morales. I'd say he's in his prime, and he's got skilz, but I guess I wonder if he's reached his ceiling already. Problem is, we don't know because he hasn't fought anybody other than Barrios.
Dude, Ali is one of few figures who transcended his sport and was born out of one of the most important periods of this century (Civil Rights movement).
Stallone just made a great movie.
The USA also has not officially recognized the Armenian Genocide. This is due to their obvious political ties with Turkey.
Look at this BITCH Condoleeza Rice talkin about it... how well she avoids the word Genocide
The U.S. has bases in Turkey, that's why they don't officially recognize the genocide. I've seen genocide pictures with skulls stacked one on top of other, pretty sickening. I think a only few politicians like Bob Dole come out and recognize it. Isn't there a big rally in Montebello? None of the local L.A. stations give it any real press. Huge Armenian communities in Glendale and Montebello. All the Armenians I know HATE the Turks.
No fighter that small will ever be a real PPV headliner unless he really has somethings pecial and for that he needs and all time great opponent...and NO VIC IS NOT THAT GUY. were talking legend status.
Bingo. 'Nuff said.
Ler is a boy bitch. Yeah, he's blocking all the punches, but only throws 2 counters and just walks away. WTF? Fuck you pussy! Too much posing when he walks away, too. So what? Yeah you can take Arce's best, but fight muther fucker.
PBF can be a clown, but it's all part of the show. In Baldi fight, he came out looking like Marvin the Martian in that stupid giant gladiator outfit wearing pink gloves....was he disrespectful to homo cartoon characters everywhere? Haha. If you're gonna offend a nationality, I think it's real disrespectful when you boo national anthem...and Latino's have done that many times.
Haha...Brazil is a world leader in treating woman like shit. They have like the highest incidents of rape and violence towards woman according to UN and human rights groups. Do you see Popo laughing? He ain't worried about shit. The machos rule that culture, and that's just the way it is. The difference being, if he was in Japan, they'd blindfold him and swap out that fine ass bitch last minute with a Sumo wrestler because the Japs are sadistic like that.
Pac still has a coronation party to attend with MAB and JMM, then Joan Guzman and Valero got next which won't be easy. It won't be two years till we see him move up, still good fights and lots of unfinished biz left @ 130.
