They all fought for championships at catchweights.
So are they less respectable because of that?
What other boxers have fought for championships at catchweights?
I am talking from a point of view of common sense multiplied by some experience and education,
which still does not trump cotto and his teams intimate knowledge of cotto's physiology.
you just threw a couple of cliches, that are mostly not even backed by real facts.
10+ lbs is not a cliche... neither is the fact that there is a reason for weight divisions.
I am especially twisting at the point about Cotto's size.
c'mon! cotto is fukkin huge. he banged it out w/ mosley, clottey and margo (all of them are also huge WWs)!!! he fought guys that pbf don't even want to be mentioned. GET REAL!!!
Next thing I hear Mike Tyson actually outsized Lennox Lewis because he was more muscular.
that is assine, as there are no more divisions above HW and you know this man.
Anyway stop relying so much on what other people say, especially in boxing.
wow, you just pulled the rug from underneath your own feet.
Annie was right though, all the real discussion is left in team classic, this place's only good to start a flame war.
i agree, not many peeps on NSB actually talk boxing, they are just cheerleaders.
I answered them in your quote.
1) cotto and his trainer's specific knowledge of cotto's physiology > your general boxing knowledge
2) u act like cotto is not in control. Cotto can walk away from the fight at anytime. The contract has yet 2 be sign as far as I know. He can even fake a back or rib injury to get out of the fight.
3) cotto is a huge WW. He is not tall but he is very strong. He bodyslammed clottey like a rag doll and clottey is huge and can weigh up to 170 lbs on fight night.
4) there's a reason why there are weight divisions. 10+ lbs on fight night is a huge advantage compared to losing 1 lbs in the weigh in.
5) at the elite level 10+ lbs on fight night is a death wish compared to losing 1 lbs at the weigh in.
This whole catchweight thing is a non-issue. Even at a catchweight of 145lbs if the title is on the line Cotto will weigh in at 147. All the haters will look retarded. They are not going to cancel the fight because of 2lbs. Pacquiao will win anyway. If Cotto were to come in at 147lbs and the title is not on the line when Pacquiao beats him then his championship status will be completely hollow.
No I do, I didn't say I didn't. Doesn't make sense to me, on how you came with that sort of conclusion. What I'm saying is, we should change that.
So when did u conclude this position? Did u hold to this opinion a long time ago or just recently?
Exactly, and thats all there is to it. Doesn't mean that we've lost respect for SRL, B-Hop, JCC and Whitaker. Just stupid how someone would come up with that conclusion.
So when srl, bhop, jcc and whitaker and every other boxer that fought for championships at a catchweight weren't legit because they were at catchweight?
Look, what fighter says, and what fighter goes through are two big differences.
So u know cotto better than himself and his nutritionist?
But it is not even so much that one pound actually does make a difference when shredding off weight, because you will have to work a bit more and eat a bit less, actually concentrating more on weight maintanance work then boxing, and doing less boxing(because the fighter will have less energy) will all accumulate.
And u don't think cotto and his team haven't already considered this? U insinuating that cotto and his team are a bunch of amatuers?
But it is also a political thing, with pacman's team giving the terms on which they fight.
I'm pretty sure roach is trying to protect his boxer from a huge WW too
I am hoping Cotto does win, as I dont like Manny and dont like anyone associated with him, but still, Miguel is at a disadvantage.
Who's got the bigger disadvantage: cotto weighing in 1 lbs kless than he did against clottey, or pac giving up 10+ lbs to cotto on fight night?
I dont mind catchweight fights but I dont agree with the title being on the line. You gotta allow the champion to come in at the limit.
Exactly, and thats all there is to it. Doesn't mean that we've lost respect for SRL, B-Hop, JCC and Whitaker. Just stupid how someone would come up with that conclusion.
So u donot respect bhop, srl, jcc and sweet p and u don't consider their catchweight fights to be legitimate championship fights?
No I do, I didn't say I didn't. Doesn't make sense to me, on how you came with that sort of conclusion. What I'm saying is, we should change that.
I dont think the catchweights is as much of a problem when it helps to create a mega fight betweem two evenly matched guys at different but congruent weight devisions. But when catchweight is used to give some legitimacy to an otherwise very visible mismatch, just to make it appear as even fight when it is not, say for example a supermiddleweight prime Roy Jones Decided to fight prime or not so prime welterweight Oscar De La Hoya at 160, then there is a problem in the eyes of some. Looking at the concept of catchweight instead of the actual circumstances is giving a ligitimacy where it should not be given.
How do you feel about heavyweights? There's no cap on that but Klitschko beat Chagaev in a championship bout THIS year outweighing over 20lbs. That's not an advantage? Haye will fight Valuev, and will weigh 215ish, while Valuev has come over 300lbs. That's not an advantage? Why is it acceptable for heavyweights, but we get so much flack for 2lbs in Pac Cotto fight. Ridiculous.
How about for once, we don't take that bullcrap of having of having a title being put on the line, if its gonna take place at a catch weight. Although it has happend in the past, we shouldn't allow this to happen.
So u donot respect bhop, srl, jcc and sweet p and u don't consider their catchweight fights to be legitimate championship fights?
I was actually thinking in the lines of Mayweather - Marquez.
In Pacman's case the catchweight is used to have Cotto at his weakest, and use it to an advantage.
U know that 145 is only 1 lbs away from 146 lbs (cotto's official weight for the clottey fight)? Also, miguel is willing to fight at 145 lbs, in fact team pac gave into cotto's demand of 145 lbs. So what real advantage will pac really have? Cotto himself believes he can function at 145 lbs. Imho pac is fukked, there no reason for cotto to lose to a former 106 lber.
