How's it going, everyone? Long-time lurker, first-time poster here, and I feel the need to be transparent about where I'm operating from before you read on. I've been a casual fan of boxing my whole life, with my interest getting much more intense during the Mayweather/De La Hoya fight up to now - and I've watched quite a few archival (complete, not Youtube clipshows) fights since then. I'm not claiming to know all there is to know about boxing, so if you're looking for a fight with me on a message board, you won't find it here. If there are any intellectuals in the house that just want to discuss/debate boxing and this issue in particular, then by all means, proceed.
So it's no mystery that there's a ton of mud swirling around the Pac/Cotto fight and the WBO Welterweight Title, currently occupied by Miguel Cotto. While I'm in total agreement that the WBO taxing Cotto where it might not be necessary is obviously unjust, I feel like the weight issue itself as it relates to this fight should be a matter of fact/rule, and not up for debate in the first place. From Wikipedia:
A welterweight boxer weighs in at between 140 pounds (63.5 kg) and 147 pounds (66.7 kg).
Now, regardless of the fact that Cotto won the belt at 147 lbs., the catchweight of 145 lbs. is still within the welterweight limit, and thus making this a legitimate welterweight fight, from where I sit. So with taxes and fees aside, why shouldn't this be for the WBO Welterweight Championship?
The pactards are the one's complaining about 2 little pounds.
Let the man weigh in at his weight and quit bitching.
Catchweights are for pussies.
then Julio Caesar Chavez is a pussy too
Why is Pacman being called a "bitch" for moving up in weight to face seemingly much larger man in Cotto? Because he demands Cotto to come in at 145 instead of 147 and to defend his title?
Assuming this makes perfect sense, you all should be calling Cotto a "bitch" when he comes in 10+ lbs more than Pacman come fight night...
Both men should be praised for their courage and giving the fans what they REALLY wanna see. Both men made sacrifices in making this fight. And I'm sure there will not be any excuses or complaints between these two men after the fight, unlike some of us nagging about every tiny little shit about the negotiations...
if both parties settle everything from purse split to title defense, and agree to whatever they settle on (by signing the contract), we don't need to complain. Can't we just let'em fight?!
Exactly! stop complaining like little bitches!
Cotto doesn't care about the weight, his team thinks they can use it as a bargaining chip to get more money. Even moronic cotto stans should understand this.
It was never about the weight, its all about the money.
If team pac gave some money to cotto for the belt all these idiots would shut up quick.
i agree this is just a bargaining chip to either get money or make the fight at 147. i doubt cotto really gives a **** about the belt he just doesnt want to come out of pocket to defend it and now that he sees that arum and roach really want it he and his advisors are trying to see what they can get to put it up. no he is not scared to defend it and when you idiots claim he is you come off as haters and you look stupid

ok. but don't you also think that sice the "welterweight" limit is 147 lbs, making it 145 max doesn't make it a "welterweight" fight?
A WW fight is anything between 147 and 141 lbs, there fore a fight with a 145 lbs limit is still a WW fight.
If it wasn't then srl would have never been a lt HW titlist when he won it fight at a (gasp) catchweight!!!

So cotto should walk away from $15 million then???
Pacteam: Why is cotto waving that puertorican flag?
Ref: He is puertorican
Pac team: We only want filipino flags in arena.
Ref: What do you want me to do?
Pac team: Go tell Arum, he'll do anything for me
Michael Buffer: In accordance with pacquiao/Arum productions, we ask all fans to PLEASE not wave any puertorican flags or Miguel Cotto will be deducted 1 point every round we see a puertorican flag
Cotto: Damn....that too !
So cotto should walk away from $15 million???
STFU cum-gobbler!! Cotto won't walk away from an easy $15 million but what's next? You know pac team is going to demand something else. Pullcounter...you know they will.
So what is cotto gonna do about it? You want him to walk away from $15 million because of the stupid vacant wbo strap???
He won't. He'll show up at 145/title fight with no cutman, no bottled water and no chair in corner and pac team will complain....HEYYYYYY.....COTTO SHOWED UP...and they ask Arum to get title but cotto has to leave...lol I love the pac team. I have never seen pac team put sooo many conditions in any of his fights....love it ! 145/TITLE FIGHT ON 11/14/09

good post. even casual fans understand how it works. i dont know why theres so many people who complains about it
Cotto DOES want to fight Paquiao at what they agreed to...145/non-title. Manny is holding everything up by demanding fight be a title fight
So cotto should walk away from $15 million???
