It was a sad site to see in the last few rounds but I have tremendous respect for both fighters, more so than ever. Only one guy gets to be victorious, but no one in his/her right mind can sincerely call either man a loser.
The best fought the best last night, boxing needs more of that.
How do you boxing extremists feel about a LW MMA champion beating a SHW Boxing champion?
Just sayin. Seeing how Sylvia-Mercer is such a big deal or will double standards start running loose? :dunno:
You mentioned Butterbean? Oh yeah, great fighter. I rate him just a notch below Ali.
prime bowe vs prime wlad
This would be a fight I would enjoy watching. I just can't get past my lack of faith in Wlad's chin and his poor stamina. For a big heavyweight Bowe had excellent stamina, his chin was good, but certainly not KO proof.
Andrew Golota did a hell of a number on Bowe with his own under-rated jab. How much credit you Golota for that probably depends on whether or not you considered Bowe to be shot at that point. For me personally, I know Bowe had been lazy at times in his preparation for some of his bouts, but I still think A.G. deserves credit for the things he did right in those two fights.
I don't think Vitali has a jab that is a textbook perfect as his brothers, but he still has the reach and that thudding power. I have to give Vitali the benefit of the doubt based on the fact his chin is strong, good work-rate, scary power, all in an oversized body.
The tough, bad-ass Bowe that fought Holyfield in their first fight probably goes the distance, but I don't see him getting the decision.
I give Vitali the edge but not Wlad.
First off...
This is my first post, but I have been watching the forums forever.
Anywayz...
So here I am on my sofa watching Saturday's fights...and here comes bum a$$ Cintron saying he got head bunted. It also seemed like he was gonna have a b#itch fit if the ref gave Martinez the win. The dude has problems...and on top of it he is a b#tch and a disgrace to boxing (and Puerto Rico).
Oh and then he has the nerve to do a victory dance, and say he was robbed! Hopefully I never run into this dude here on the island cause if so I'm hitting him with a coconut or something!:killyou:
Don't feel bad because Cintron is Peurto Rican. The dude is just an asswipe and every group of people has plenty of them. We can't all blame ourselves for the sins of those that look like, talk like, come from the place, or come from the same group of people as ourselves.
Cintron is just a mediocre talent behaving like an ass because he is full of shit by nature. The dude needs to get the **** out of boxing for certain.
That must be it! We have them in every race. I just think that he should keep his mouth quiet sometimes.
Now that is the spirit! Peace to you and all your Peurto Rican brothers and sisters from this (mostly) German-American. Peace to all.
I agree with the OP. Mayweather's "victory" over Oscar looks even less meaningful today. It wasn't very conclusive then and after what Manny just did tonight...who cares?
Yeah seriously, I am glad someone finally said it. I mean, what is with all the hype about this guy? So what if he is young, undefeated, and has lots of knockouts in some exciting fights? Who cares about a blue-collar fighter that works harder in the ring than at a press conference?
I think we can all agree that this guy would be more important if he was from another country than America, someone who spoke very little english and weighed 105 lbs. Especially when the middleweight division already has such a must-see, all action, dominant champion. Duh!!!
Pavlik is a waste of my time and EVERY TRUE BOXING FAN MUST AGREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anything else is just retarded.
What boxing really needs right now is more boxers that focus on making sure their robes represent hip-hop to the fullest and "them ringwalks be da illest eva. I want to see more spoiled brats that piss all over the truly great fighters of the past, only to then throw 14 punches per round in a mega-fight. I want to hear more fighters who will call themselves the greatest and fight a worthy opponent once every five years. I want to see more boxers save their best moments for negotiating their contracts with HBO, getting 10 billion dollars for six fights against four cab drivers, one high school physical education teacher, and a drug addict pulled from behind the dumpster over at K.F.C.
Unless you have some really clever trash talk for then next five years, or you are at least willing to send some "shout-outs" to the guys stealing little, old ladies purses in your neighborhood, I don't care about you Pavlik. Fo' real.
Poor Manny, he deserves a fighter that will respect his experience and knowledge of the sport. Someone who will always make his greatest effort to execute the game plan. Can anyone imagine what Wlad would look like in some of his recent fights if he blew Steward off the way Taylor does? Yikes!
I know Manny is far too much of a classy guy to ever make such a statement to the public, but I would be willing to bet that if Manny had his choice of which corner to work in a Pavlik/Taylor fight, I bet he would rather be with Pavlik.
It is certainly silly to think that one fight on per-per-view could bring boxing back into the mainstream, AND be the spark that rekindles the average joe's interest in boxing. However, this fight is the perfect vehicle to build some momentum in favor of boxing again with careful planning.
If there was ever a fight truly worthy of pay-per-view, this is one of the few that qualify. Should this fight turn out to be boring and make people pissed off at boxing/ pay-per-view, it will almost certainly be Mayweather's fault.
Floyd has said on the hardcore boxing websites that winning comes first and "looking good" comes 2nd. Casual sports fans are listening to Floyd in the mainstream media saying "I am going to put a beating on Oscar and humilate him." Therefore those casual/former/potential new boxing fans expect Floyd to fight with passion and take risks.
If Floyd decides to use his feet more than his fists, throw one-punch counters here and there, shake his ass and taunt, and grab De La Hoya when ever he gets close...this is going to a boring fight and have some bad repercussions for boxing.
If floyd Mayweather is half as awesome as he thinks/says he is, then he should be able to out-punch the "34 year old part-time fighter with one good arm and a cold defense."
That is what Leonard, Robinson, Armstrong, Duran, Hearns, Pryor and the true all-time greats would have done. That is what people outside the forums at boxingscene.com are looking for because that is what made so many people fall in love with boxing in the past.
If Floyd stinks out the joint then you can expect people to say "I told you so." Then those same people will rant and rave about the awesomeness of MMA, and how one fighter slams another dude on his back and punches him in the face until he is bloody...:soapbox:
lol. I can't believe some people said Oscar looks soft or some bullshit along those lines. I have never seen De La Hoya look so ripped. Any doubts about whether this fight is truly important to Oscar the fighter and not just about oscar the business man have been eraced.
I am curious about what Oscar's actual weight will be come fight time though. I am getting the feeling that Oscar might be only 158 to 160. I wonder if Roach is having Oscar go "light" to increase his speed and stamina?
I can't wait to see how this fight will unfold.
I love the idea of a post fight 24/7. HBO really needs to do something other than just show the replay a week later. What a let-down that is...
I also hope that HBO does not abuse the success of 24/7 by doing them in the future with far inferior fights for the sake of promotion. If an up-coming fight is good then it would be cool. But not for Jermain Taylor against a blown-up featherweight, or for James Toney against some heavyweight with 13 losses from the mid-west.
I would just like to say that I was quite a big fan of Mayweather until a few years ago. I have just been turned off by some of his trash-talking and thuggish antics.
Having said that, I would like to add that I am a white person but I never think that Floyd is tarnishing the image of black people. However, I do feel that he has really hurt himself in terms of being less of a star than he really should be.
Floyd could have been almost as big as Oscar is in terms of bringing mainstream people to boxing and making two or three times as much money. The only thing that would keep Floyd behind Oscar is the smaller k.o. percentage.
Anyway, I think it is important for all of us to remember that we can't judge another race based on the actions of one person, or this group, or that group of people. Some people just do stupid shit or rotten things to others. All the really decent/smart people I know are firm believers that race has nothing to do with it.
I certainly like Oscar far more than I will ever like Mayweather, but I will tell the truth and admit that Floyd won the fight. I believe that Oscar was very competitve despite his age and ring-rust but he let this fight go to Floyd.
To my eyes, Oscar looked very nervous early in the fight and probally burned up alot of energy that he could have used later in the fight. The later rounds were the deciding factor in a closer than expected fight.
It also seems that Oscar might have bought too much into all the hype about needing a knockout to win against Floyd. Why in the world did he stop jabbing when it is one of his signature weapons and Floyd seemed to have no real answer for it?
Sadly, I saw oscar even attempt a few Rocky Balboa-style-desperation hooks at Floyd's head. How can such a good fighter with so much big fight experience make such mistakes? I will give Mayweather some of the credit based on his talent, but I think most of the problem was in Oscar's head.
My only problem with the Mayweather fans taking a victory-lap right now is the lack of truth about Floyd's performance. I saw Floyd throw many of his punches right into oscar's gloves throughout the fight. Floyd landed some good punches to be sure, but not what anyone would expect given his "prime skills" against a 34 year old, less-active, robot with a one-arm strategy.
Oscar looked like a typical older fighter with reduced speed, poor reflex-time, and just waiting too long to do something to sustain or create momentum. Mayweather did not look like the fighter that promised to "ice that motherfucker," and the guy that thinks he is better than Leonard, Robinson, and Ali.
The blueprint to beat Floyd has been drawn by Castillo and De la hoya. A fighter with a good, fast jab that is willing to press the action both mentally and physically for 12 rounds, without giving in to Floyd's trashtalk, will win against Mayweather. It will take more than just an average fighter willing to try, but an A-level boxer will do it.
This was an excellent interview. It reminds me of why I liked Lamps so much before he began to sound like a cheerleader for the HBO house fighters like J. Taylor.
As for why he said he does not miss working with Big George, the answer is obvious. George is a great fighter and a really good guy, but his commentating was almost total shit. Lampley spent most of his time trying to do damage-control for most of the very absurd things George would say.
I don't blame him for not missing that one bit. :ugh:
Uh exuse me Mr. Violence, but what is up with your not so subtle racism? Bannana, tire lips and only a dumb ass ------ like tyson blah blah blah?
Do you think you are fooling anyone with that type of talk? Let me be clear, racism is the choice of mental midgets. I have seen nothing in your posts that demonstrate you are capable or representing "the master race" (lol) or even your own preference for mma.
This is the second time today that I have read the phrase "only $10M" and I am as flabbergasted now as I was the first time I read it. $10M is a shit-load of cash and he is being asked to fight in England not on the fucking Moon.
Thank you. Since when is 10 million dollars chump change? Floyd doesn't excite the casual fans nearly enough to try to demand Oscar De La Hoya type of money. It doesn't matter how great his skills are if they don't impress people beyond the boxing fanatics.
Floyd needs to start making some realistic choices in terms of his battles outside the ring, or STAY FUCKING RETIRED. Going to England to fight someone that has a rabid fanbase like Hatton is not too much to ask. It can't be done even once in Floyd's career because it is just oh so difficult to do?
Whatever happened to being the champion of the WORLD anyway? I believe most of the all-time greats made their way around the globe for a fight here and there. Those of us that are Americans have become spoiled and think everybody needs to come to "us' or else. It really doesn't work that way.
Wow. This is a great catch for the UFC and is probally good for mma in general. I always liked Wayne McCullough both as a boxer and as a person.
Does anybody remember his fight with Zaragoza up in Boston on Boxing After Dark? That was a highly entertaining fight to say the least. But then again, Wayne had so many of those...
Anyway, Wayne is a smart guy and a good writer too, both boxing and mma should be thankful to have him around.
I think Kellerman was a two at best, but Lampley was terrible too. The HBO crew has turned to shit. My girlfriend said it is like Lampley has his own talk show with boxing matches in the background.
Those guys don't spend enough time talking about the actual fight with any urgency, and they don't try to explain to viewers ( for those who want to watch but don't know the sweet science inside and out) why a fight is progressing the way it is.
I really believe that is part of the reason that some people are more excited about things like mma and the boxing on Showtime. HBO really needs to raise their game to a much higher level.
If you want to see some good MMA watch some Pride events. In my opinion they were lightyears ahead of UFC..Bummer that they went out of business.
Man, I really love the Pride fighting events, that is the most exciting and highly skilled mma I have ever seen.
ufc is alright if you like watching a bunch of useless street punks have a tussle.
I love boxing just as much as you do, but that was a very ignorant statment to make. I think in the early days of the UFC it was pretty common to get some guys with very sketchy credentials. If the first ten or so UFC's are all you have ever watched I can understand why you would hold that opinion.
I haven't watched an entire UFC in years, I only see some of the fights posted on youtube these days. The point is, that the fighters of today are very well conditioned athletes that know they must have a well-rounded fighting capability to win. Many of those guys have spent years learning different styles of martial arts to compete in a sport they love.
Awesome video! Thank you for posting this. I find it so cool to see that Bernard and Randy are appreciating each other for their combative talents.
Boxing and mma should really unite and work for more mainstream respect that the other "big" sports always get.
These days their netowkr consists of nothing but "Celebreality" shows. They take B and C rated, washed up hasbeen celebrities and give them their own shows. Flavor Flav, Bret Michaels, Scott Baio, basically guy's who haven't seen work since the late 80's or early 90's.
Alright, thanks for the info. Obviously I have not watche VH1 in a really long time. Wow. Last time I watched for a bit, the music on VH1 was much closer to what I like than MTV could ever even hope to be, so I was judging purely on that factor.
For the record, anybody who watches MTV is a moron, not a wigger. MTV is the most horrible cable channel to ever come along, with VH1 being right there up it's ass in second place.
I completely agree with your thoughts on MTV. I need to state that I very seldom watch VH1, I can't even recall when I last viewed VH1 but... Why is VH1 so terrible?
Possibly. but, ahhhh, if I'm right....If we find out that the little, pink man isn't on Floyd's level...
The "pink man?" Hatton is pink? Pink?
How is saying that someone is "British" classified as racial? YOU are the one making it racial.
Really? Have other people made this thing racial?
Talking about how an individual speaks is not automaticly a racial thing, so please don't use that as your answer. Sometimes the way people talk is just something that annoys you about another person. People are entitled to feel that way and they are not required to make exceptions for idiots, or people who chose to sound dumb.
the whole ppv concept is what really makes boxing not as mainstream more than showing a few highlights on sports center
Oh, I completely agree. I only mentioned it because pay-per-view is here to stay no matter how much I dislike it. Believe me, I hate it.
This stupid J.M Marquez vs R. Juarez pay-per-view is a perfect example of what is wrong with boxing. They need to scrap that piece of crap right now, or go and load it with 6 or 7 meaningful/exciting fights to keep it. lol.
I would complain less about pay-per-view if they were down to 2 or 3 per year, and LOADED with fights that are no-brainers for the good of boxing.
thats cute
if only you could back up that statement with some facts....
Well, I thought we were all talking based on our opinions in this thread. You always speak in terms of facts, and never state an opinion in any thread? Interesting.
I think you answered your own question but it was important to talk about. People/sports fans need to see some exciting highlights on the Sports shows in order to think, "hey, I want to see the rest of that fight too! I wonder if the next fight coming up next week will be that good?"
Once that happens you get a few guys getting together and chipping in to pay for the pay-per-view and they get hooked on the boxing experience.
I swear, I hope Pavlik knocks his ass out. I can't stand Taylor. He's someone that had his 0 waaaay too long. There's nobody I'd like to see take it away more than Pavlik. Pavlik has such star potential with his exciting style and crazy KO power. We need a replacement of Jermain ASAP.
Man, I coudn't agree more with what you wrote! My thoughts exactly. Thank you.
