Good thread! A lot good ideas being thrown around, and everyone has a valid point. Being in the medical field, I believe having a good competent physician will help reduce severe injuries and the burden of the trainer/team making the tough decision. You need a physician who will monitor and evaluate in between rounds and if need too will perform quick testing that should take no more than 30 seconds to perform (pupil, eye muscles, and peripheral check). These tests are routinely done in Ophthalmology (and Neurology) setting to test brain to eye function. I don't know what type of doctor is in the corner evaluating fighters, but it needs to be a SPECIALIST not a primary care physician who may not be well rounded in evaluating fighters who need immediate care..... Someone like a Neurologist-who is the best option; but an Ophthalmologist or ER doctor can do too, both are FULLY capable in recognizing early signs of neurological impairment.
Joshua to me hasn't fought with the same confidence since the 6th round with Klitchsko. Even though he won the battle, I don't think he won the "war". He has been somewhat reluctant to commit or engage, and has struggled since beating Waldmir.
It depends on Andy. If Andy comes in motivated and determined again, Joshua is not winning. If Andy comes in unmotivated and already "satisfied" attitude that he already "won" by winning the first fight, then Joshua has a chance to win by circle, jab, move (control the distance), right hand-which he was so reluctant to throw last night, follow by left hook......rinse and repeat until stoppage or decision.
I won't be suprised if Adonis and Kovalev end up fighting next. Adonis now sees weaknesses in Kovalev and will try to capitalize on it. Since Kovalev lost in such a baffling way his marketability in fighting Adonis would not be affected in my opinion. If I'm Kathy Duva that's the direction I would shoot for. Its a winnable fight where Kovalev can make $$ and become champion again. For Adonis, he has the chance to CLEARLY beat Kovalev (preferably by KO) and somewhat erase his doubters.
Andre Ward-Not much left for him expect to unify with Adonis but I cannot see Haymon and Roc Nation working together. Also cannot see Stevenson winning against Ward due to their styles.
Rigo-Just be active!
Main event started way too late (east coast time). You can't expect casuals or even boxing fans to stay up that late for a fight where we already know what the outcome will be. Its a shame though, Loma is really talented and fan friendly.
What type of retinal detachment or "break" did he have? Was it partial or full detachment? Macula on or off detachment?.....depending on what type of detachment (and post op recovery) will determine if his career will continue or not. I don't think any responsible ophthalmologist will clear him to ever fight again because Spence will be "at risk" of having another RD (retinal detachments) with his type of occupation. Man I really pray for him and his family. I saw this fight live and I will never forget his ring exit walk. He looked incoherent and a women (mostly likely his mother) was holding his hand. I told my wife that he didn't seem right and might be having a medical emergency. I'm in the medical field and he had all the red flags of someone not medical fit during his walkout.
One thing that still bothers me to this day is the fact the crowd was booing him during the fight and after the fight. People thought he was looking for a way out of the fight and just quit after his corner unknowingly removed his gloves after the 9th round.
I hope he pulls through one day.
Forgot to add I saw and chatted with Williams after the fight. A real nice genuine guy. His "cut throat" antics during the fight did not reflect the person I talked too.
2-3 year ban from the sport and fine is the appropriate action in my opinion. I understand emotions get in the way but this was premeditated. He intended to attack Jose the minute he walked to his corner. Every time I see the Dirrell brothers fight or in the crowd they seem to bring a negative energy.
I think HBO should have showed Loma vs Walters first and then show the reply of Kolv vs Ward.
A couple of my friends fell asleep and missed the fight watching the replay of Kov and Ward.
It's funny how the two most popular fighters in UFC cannot stay in their lane without mentioning or dissing Mayweather who was/is the face of boxing.
Currently Thurman is the man in the division but Spence is a half a step behind him. After his fight with Jessie he needs to pursue and unify with Spence. Porter rematch does nothing for him at this point ( i know he's the mando) and he may lose that fight to be honest.
Him losing to Spence will not impact his career compared to him losing to Porter or someone else. Look at Danny Garcia, he had all the momentum, name recognition, etc, after the Lucas fight. He could've gotten a Mayweather fight before he retired, but him and his father wanted to create their own lane, legacy, whatever. He could've made millions and a loss would not have impacted his career, but no he ended up losing to Thurman and since then his stock has taken a hit.....Thurman don't be that guy.
I don't doubt that his corner did not know what round it was.
I was there live and during the entire event they never displayed what round it was. No ring-card girl, etc.
I can hear others asking each other what round it was during each fight.
Walters you did quit and this is coming from a fan of yours. The inactivity, taunting and outboxing from Loma proved too much for him. His corner was pathetic last night, very disorganized. If he had an experience corner behind him he probably would have continued. We haven't seen the last of Walters, he will get another shot at another title or well known fighter.
smart decision on his behalf, but I think he will be back soon. No excuses on not maintaining some sort of basic training while on layoff. He really needs to fully commit himself if he decides to box again.
