People please list your suggestion other than the obvious, .
It's all too easy to say Buddy should have stopped it sooner.
One clue I found is that Buddy himself said by 2nd rd IIRC, Maxim wouldn't drink water--just spitting it out, possibly unable to swallow due to neurological impairment early on.
What other signs were there in the fight?
I think that EMTs should be at ringside. The moment a fight is stopped take him to the E.R. It was too long here after they stopped it before they helped him out of the ring. Every minute counts to stop the bleeding or swelling. If sometimes it turns out to have been unnecessary that's a small price to pay vs a warrior's death or lifelong disability.
What more can be done now?
less rounds is not the answer.
Less rounds is a slippery slope. 15 rounds was not the problem and it already killed a lot of the spirit of a champion fighter and a championship fight.
Most of the injuries statistically come in the lower weight divisions because of accumulation of punishment. Not sure there is much we can do. Fights today are generally less intense than they once were so the one thing we could ask is why did the old timers manage? Sure there were deaths in the ring...but they also fought a lot more rounds, with smaller gloves, and yet, people managed.
The one constant, the thing that changed is the level of conditioning that was normative for fighters. Being in very good condition in boxing, is a pretty good insurance policy. Maybe we could have more rigid guidelines in the lower weight classes (where most of these incidents occur) when it comes to the fighters being prepared as professionals.
There will always be those who have a defect somewhere and it is sad. It is a lottery really. We could all buy tickets to the fight at the sands and decide to have a site convey where we all drive together at 20 miles an hour on the freeway. That way nobody could get hurt on the road right? Most of us would take our chances and go 70 because we take that risk. Unfortunately in the lower divisions of boxing we are faced with the same scenario. Some people will die as a result of our society sanctioning boxing.
I don't see comments when I click on it. Are there actually people talking negatively about Max or something?
Just rampant ignorance and stupidity. Here are a couple examples:
"An absolute brutal Neanderthal sport. Even football and hockey players wear headgear."
"People love the barbaric violence. They act like, "oh my!" when someone is beaten to death. Humans haven't evolved since Rome. Just the same primitive bloodlust."
"And here I thought whites were supposed to be superior"
"White men can’t box! He tried and died"
"Boxing the sort of sport brain dead people watch."
"What else do you expect to happen? He got what he deserved in my opinion. Oh, he expected money and fame....my bad."
... and a bunch more stupid **** that was already deleted.
Good thread! A lot good ideas being thrown around, and everyone has a valid point. Being in the medical field, I believe having a good competent physician will help reduce severe injuries and the burden of the trainer/team making the tough decision. You need a physician who will monitor and evaluate in between rounds and if need too will perform quick testing that should take no more than 30 seconds to perform (pupil, eye muscles, and peripheral check). These tests are routinely done in Ophthalmology (and Neurology) setting to test brain to eye function. I don't know what type of doctor is in the corner evaluating fighters, but it needs to be a SPECIALIST not a primary care physician who may not be well rounded in evaluating fighters who need immediate care..... Someone like a Neurologist-who is the best option; but an Ophthalmologist or ER doctor can do too, both are FULLY capable in recognizing early signs of neurological impairment.
everyone is so cheap in boxing
the worst-case scenario should always be in the minds of those in power
there needs to be a doctor looking at the fighter in between rounds. if there was, then it would have been a huge red flag that he was not drinking water. instead they have some security guard looking to see if no rules are being broken. it is so backward it is unbelievable
immediate oxygen to the fighter
forget post-fight interviews in what is such a brutal fight
Finally: Someone who here lives up to his moniker: Voice of Reason.

I just realized that more education should not just be for refs and trainers. Should be for fighters themselves.
if Buddy had told Maxim inearly rds, "You can't swallow, I'm calling the fight" Maxim sure would have resisted, but maybe not if he had been told that's a sign that he's already sustained some brain damage or swelling and needs to get to a hospital asap.
To ban proffesional boxing is the only thing that could be done really.
How do you want to prevent deaths in the "sport" where the goal is hitting the other person in the head repeatedly until he/she loses consiousness?
Olympic boxing is the only relatively safe form of boxing.
They can set a limit on the number of punches that are allowed in the head & force the boxers to attack the body instead.
Its really hard to prevent this when the goal in boxing is to punch the other guys brain. A great start would be to have a competent medical team, trainers, and referee that can identify the early signs of brain trauma.
Anyways, im disgusted by this.
Holy crap the comments in that article makes me want to strangle every single one of those morons.

the girl who wrote it tho
she fine
:luvbed:
There were several fights like that even though I can’t think one straight off my head.
I've been a hardcore fan since the late 90's I can't think of too many.
However, I'm interested to see your huge list of fighter's that had lost rounds 1-8 and came back to win the fight.
Fox has gone national with this.

Poor guy was fighting to get green card and bring his family over.
His wife landed last night and was told he had a short time left, nothing they could do.

There is really not much you can do.
Everyone's body reacts differently.
That's the sport. Gruesome.
You're not supposed to get hit in the head. Yet this is a sport.
I agree. I don't really think there's much you can do. They're never going to lessen the rounds from 3 minutes, and sure you can make non-title fights 10 rds or less, but who's to say that a guy doesn't get hit right and something like this happens in round 7? Or round 5?
The right punch in the right spot with enough force, at any time, could put someone in serious trouble. Or worse.
How many fights have you seen whereby a fighter was down 8 rounds and came back to win?
For every Chavez-Taylor there's 1000 examples of the guy losing every round losing the fight.

Boxing is the theatre of the unexpected where anything can happen at any given moment. This is why people are drawn to the sport, no?
If you start putting too much restrictions, the competition isnt pure anymore.
That’s the dumbest thing ive ever heard lol

Trainers and officials have to be more observant, that’s all they can do.
Unfortunately, they have shown that they are not very observant. Fight after fight guys just get sent back out to take more and more punishment. Recently there's fights like Spence-Garcia, Dogboe-Navarrete 1 and even Ugas-Figueroa which were all one sided fights that nobody (ref, corner, commission or doctor) stopped the fight. Larry Hazard was the only commissioner that would ever stop fights, perhaps he should give other commission's advice on how to stop fights.

A rule where they limit the shots to the head & force the fighters to go after the body instead.
If a fighter loses every round on all scorecards going into round 9 the fight is automatically stopped. I remember the Jesus Chavez-Levander Johnson fight where Chavez won every round of the fight before the ref stopped the fight in the 11th. There's literally no point in fighting on just to take more punishment when there's no chance to win at all.

There isnt anything we can do to make the sport safer unfortunately.
Either ban the sport or just continue as is.
Somebody mentioned how championship fights should be downgraded to 2 minutes of 10 rounds. Why not just have them wear 30oz pillow gloves and football helmet while you are at it. What about no punches to the face?
Boxing is a modern day gladiator sport and it’s always been brutal. Im sorry that a fighter died but that dont mean we gotta change the sport and sht.

He didn't look so bad, he was fighting back, he just looked fatigue and the shots landing on him seem to affect him, Buddy stops the fights when he sees no point of continuing, he didn't look good when Buddy was questioning him and thats when I felt they should stop it, him walking out of the ring just made it really sad he fought his heart out, I knew he was really bad at that point more than just fatigue
