Yet jr is still not banging on Warren's door to make the fight. I wonder how many more cans Eubank is gonna thrash before fighting somebody with a pulse.
Promoter: why isn't this fighter choosing to make more money right now instead of perfecting his craft so that he's truly ready for the big fight?
Lol... promoters man. Always after the quick dollar.
+1
It's also a bit disingenuous to suggest Blackwell is simply a domestic level opponent. He's won and defended the British title a couple of times including a win over John Ryder. Drawn with Khomitsky too and has a #15 rank with the WBC. I definitely consider him a European level middleweight.
Jr will be a decent favourite but it's a real fight.
It would seem like this guy lost before he defended the title a 3rd time would be the issue. Blackwell seems like a competitive cat & typically competitive guys don't want charity which is what this would be if we are being honest.
They can always give him some honorary belt or something can't they?
Well it's very likely Blackwell will never fight again after an injury like that. Yes he clearly lost to Eubank jr. But there is a good chance he would have gone on to reclaim the British title and win it outright after Jr vacates it. Something he probably won't have the chance to do now.
We're talking about somebody who won and defended the title twice and showed incredible toughness and courage in his tragic third defence. We're not talking about any old Joe here who didn't even hold the title. If that's not enough for an exception to the rule, I don't know what is.
A May return for Haye? He won in less than a round without taking a single notable punch!
He should be out again much sooner like late March, he's 35, with no time to waste.
But if he waits until May it needs to be an eliminator or solid top 10 opponent. I'm guessing he'll end up going for Martin or the Chagaev/Browne winner eventually.
Boom hope this happens. It's a real good fight to see where Joshua is at. Chisora is the perfect gatekeeper. Loses to world class fighters and beats anything less.
I'm not sure that he is "elite" class but: Beating Bika > A close fight (with early stoppage) and a KO loss to Froch. If Dirrell would just amost beat Bika second time or he would got knock out then Groves would be ahead of him, but since Dirrel beat Bika, Groves isn't ahead of him. Simple as that.
I don't think anyone is saying Groves is above Dirrell, but I would say they're similarly ranked. Taking Micky Mouse titles out of it, they're both mid top10 contenders.
Groves isn't ranked solely on losing competitively to Froch, he has also beaten DeGale (Olympic gold medalist and Froch's mandatory), Glen Johnson and even Paul Smith has an alphabet title shot lined up.
I'd still fancy him to beat anyone not named Froch or Ward. Assuming of course he bounces back the same fighter.
I don't see him fighting Ward or Golovkin, Ward is unrealistic with his demands and Golovkin isn't enough of a draw.
If he fights again Hopkins at 168 could be interesting, or move up and challenge Stevenson for the light heavyweight title if he's interesting in trying to add to his legacy.
"a million pound don't go far"
Yeah comments like that are definately going to improve his image...
He's in a very privileged position, loads of people in the country would give anything to be in his position and have the opportunities he's had. Then he makes out it isn't a big deal. A bit of humility would go a long way.
Khan by decision.
Doesn't mean ***** for getting Mayweather though. He'll do as he pleases when it comes time to pick as he's shown before. I'm increasingly feeling like Mayweather doesn't want to face quick fighters too.
Wouldn't be shocked at all if somehow it was Danny Garcia, a rebounding Shawn Porter over an overrated name (like what happened with Maidana), or dehydrating the ***** out of a name from 154-160. 150lbs Golovkin or something :lol1:
It is one excuse after another for Mayweather to not fight Khan.
Fair enough if it is Pacquiao next, but we've been teased with that fight too many times for rumours to be taken seriously, besides Pacquiao isn't the same fighter he was 5 years ago anyway.
I really want to see Mayweather fight someone quick next, if it's not Pacman, it has to be Khan. Otherwise Khan should fight Kell Brook at Wembley, with the winner all but guaranteed the winner of Pac-Mayweather.
Pacquiao not the same as 5 years ago ? Neither is Floyd. Wait, are you already cooking up excuses for when Floyd wipes his a** with Manny. Stop it. Khan fighting Brook means more to the UK at this point, thats who he should fight.
Pacquiao's declined more than Mayweather, quite clearly. You're deluded if you aren't going to accept that.
Both of their legacies have been damaged from not fighting each other when they should have. I'll watch the fight if it happens, but from a legacy point of view.... this fight is nowhere near as meaningful as it would have been when they were both in their prime.
This guy is ridiculous already! He took over as the lead clown of boxing! Str8 chump. He didn't deserve a shot back then nor does he now. Dude fights two fights at 147 against forgettable opponents and he's demanding Floyd. FOH
He hasn't reached the heights of beating Andre Berto yet. :pat:
They need to take some kind of action, it's happening far too frequently. Perhaps shorter fights so less sustained punishment. 7 or 9 round bouts maybe.
I'm only interested if this isn't boxing
This Japanese fella looks much smaller so I'm hoping that's a sign Floyd wants to try K1 or MMA. Highly sceptical though
Amazing how often these ridiculous scores come up in the big fights from the (alleged) top judges
Which always necessitates a bigger, more lucrative rematch
I wonder why it keeps happening.... $$$$$$$$$
There's an interesting video of the ref's reaction to the knockdown floating around the web.
I'm not a conspiracy theorists but I think it's worth a look. He legitimately steps away, turns and looks to someone, then proceeds to jump on the ground before he starts the count.
It's an interesting video. The Joshua glove tape incident and the Wilder cut check are other examples of strange happenings in the ring.
Yeah, it certainly happens elsewhere too
I suppose in the case of any popular fighter there's going to be people that don't want to fall off the gravy train
There needs to be major reforms in the sport, not just in the amateurs but pro game too
But again, who's going to want to do that when the rematch is going to pay everybody involved handsomely
Yeah, such incredibly stupid logic, even by pro boxer standards.
I guess Booth wants Groves to follow the Haye approach of talking himself into fights rather than earning them.
Correct me if I'm wrong but the article says he's ranked no.1 by the WBO, he's 19 fights into his career and has wins over DeGale and Johnson. He hasn't talked himself into anything. He's hyping a future fight and making a name for himself just as most boxers do. If you've been following the sport long enough you'll remember Froch being the same annoying prospect to Calzaghe. Froch has every right at this stage of his career to consider himself beyond fights like Groves, just like Calzaghe did back when Froch was a prospect.
Look at Stevenson, he's had 2 more fights than Groves, lost a fight, and fought opponents with lesser reputations than Groves opponents. His next opponent is Dawson... my point is Groves is entitled to be targeting a world title at this stage of his career.
Lol no.
There's a few idiots hanging around the forums that play the race card in response to any sort of criticism. Let them, they're embarassing themselves.
I think the best decision he can make is venture Stateside for 12 months. Spar with their best amateurs and professionals, not to mention it's a hub for other great amateurs/pros to gain experience from. He doesn't need to turn professional in this time but adapt his style to that of a professional boxer.
Come again? The best amateurs and professionals? In America? Not right now they're not. Professionally the UK has a far superior heavyweight scene currently. America barely has anyone you could argue was in the top 10 in the division (Arreola maybe) despite substantially more exposure. He will get far better quality sparring around the UK let alone Europe than he would in America. As for the amateurs America is coming off its worst performance at an olympics ever? While team GB had its most successful one ever (OK team GB had home advantage, but thats rarely acknowledged when a UK fighter fights an American in the states so I don't want to hear any moaning about that) The funding, the facilities, the coaching, the sparring are all in place over here, and the WSB's a great option available to him. Why on earth would he go to America :S
I hope he doesn't wait until the next Olympics before turning pro, get some more experience in the Amateurs and try and become world am champ, get some WSB experience, spar all around Europe against the top guys in the world and then go pro. He has so much potential.
I don't buy all this stuff about him having no chin, I'm not saying he can take a punch like Carl Froch but someone with no chin doesn't survive the fight with Maidana and doesn't get up after being knocked down by a big punch from Garcia, it's defense and brains he lacks, he's been way too easy to hit and too easily brought into a brawl.
I don't have too much of a problem with the fight, it's only his second fight with Hunter, and only the fight before last he got knocked out. Besides as people have said they tried getting a ton of better names over to the UK but they weren't interested. I expect to see Garcia - Khan 2 by the end of the year though.
Wow only 4 pounds over 30 days out?? That's crazy. He could obviously make 154 even if he shouldn't have to.
He's gonna be giving away huge amounts of weight come fight time if he ever moves to 168.
I'm down with Khan-Mayweather & Groves-Jack.
Mayweather isn't a puncher anyway, which is the only thing Khan really struggles with so could be a good fight. If it's not him or Thurman I'll be disappointed.
If Khan doesn't get Mayweather it has to be Brook, he's got to face somebody who can punch eventually.
I think it's a no brainer to take the rematch and retire if he loses it. Who's he going to fight in the meantime? And what just hope he gets another title shot soon after (if) he wins? Never going to happen. Only way is by releasing Usyk with guaranteed shot at the winner can i see that happening. He's not going to take another fight and risk the belts being split up or having to wait a couple of years for another shot and then having terms dictated to him. Seems more likely he'd retire than let that happen
He was well beaten though. Usyk was more skilled, faster, had more heart, better cardio and a better chin.
If you're trying to find hope for AJ, it's that he started far too slowly, got his tactics completely wrong and did the eye injury discourage him? So there's things to change. I think Usyk just has his number though
This could well be fight of the year. Hopefully the winner fights Mark Heffron next!
Heffron???
The winner should be looking at a world title eliminator, not looking back at domestic level.
I wouldn't even be surprised if Hearn fancies putting the winner in with DeGale if he gets past Bute.
Talk about throwing stones in a glasshouse.
I'm sure he'd love to find Canelo a new weight class for taking on McGregor.
He knows that Canelo ain't getting the McGregor payday so he's just salty.
Is them santa cruz or frampton willing yo fight Rigo or he will duck like is usual lately?
Haha turned up expecting racostaa tears, didn't leave disappointed. I think its time to get over that these 2 will be fighting, especially when your boy is still under Top Rank control for the time being.
:bottle:
If you want to post more constructively, think who Rigo can fight on the last fight of his contract, and once he's got that out the way then try and get a fight with the winner out of the reach of Uncle Bob. Moving up to Featherweight would give him quite a few potential opponents.
I can't help but like Canelo, we need more fighters that say sod the belts, I want to fight for the prestige of beating them.
They said he was cherry picking weak opposition, they said he was scared of Lara, so he fights Trout, Mayweather, Angulo and Lara in a row.
If he beats Lara I hope he moves up to 160 shortly after where there would be loads of other good opponents.
