All sports are dangerous. More kids die from football, and skate boarding than boxing. Maybe boxers should get wrapped in armor like football players, though they still complain about head damage. Running into somebody, full speed, with your whole body, helmet first, instead of just your fist. 11 guys jump on you instead of just one. Somebody once told me, when it's your time to go, you will run to meet it.
R.I.P. Scott Westgarth, you will be missed, much respect.
Condolences to the family. Tragedy and loss shape strength and power, try to remember that going forward.
THERE ARE NO "BUMS" IN THE SPORT as many as*sholes state over and over. Thoughtless casuals that have watched too many Rocky reruns. Usually it's some fat ass that couldn't lace up a velcro glove. Respect to anyone in the sport. Trainers too. Promoters the exception..lol!!
Indeed. Respect to anyone who laces them up and gets in the ring.
Very sad news and thoughts go out to fighter's family and also his opponent who must feel shocked. Interesting how this happens in the same week that Dale Evans retires, a year after the death of Mike Towell.
RIP.
They need to take some kind of action, it's happening far too frequently. Perhaps shorter fights so less sustained punishment. 7 or 9 round bouts maybe.
That might have the opposite effect. Brains will still bounce around inside the skull, but the extra padding will protect the opponents hands more. Like Gil Clancy once said, if you want to see far less deaths, go back to bare knuckle.
Interesting but pros are sparring with headgear and 16 onces gloves for a reason.
Extra padding will make you have a tighter guard, more padding to protect your face.
I can see the theory that with bare knucle fights the guy will go away faster and so will take less punishment, fair enough.
But here, there is a limit of 12 rounds, it's not like the fights are unstopped.
KO and KD are just the worst thing for the brain IMO and if we had boxing with MMA gloves, we would never see decisions.

RIP. And as some posters have said, it's pretty stupid to call someone willing to risk their health in the ring as cowards. This is a brutal sport and sometimes with brutal outcomes.
Hope he's ok. There's always room for improving safety. We should also think very carefully about certain names some of us call fighters, even when it get heated on sites like this. With the risks they face, none of them should ever be called cowards.
Very well said. Risk their lives every fight.
Hope he pulls through.

Maybe it's time to increase the gloves size.
You have hard knock out even at the lower level, with modern fitness technologies, dude are sharp as hell.
We should go from 8-10 ounces to 10-12 onces.
