I won't go as far as naming a great retired fighter, but in recent times I could name a few. But, one that truly stands out was a card that I attended. Hopkins vs Cloud at the barclays center. The main event wasn't the disappointment. The undercard was Keith Thurman vs Jan Zaveck at 154 lbs. I was very excited about Thurman and Zaveck had just loss his welterweight strap to Berto. It was a good boxing bout with plenty to offer from a purists stand, but I was expecting something else. Still, I was very impressed by Thurman in what I feel was his best win to date.
First and foremost, I'm a huge fan of manny. That being said, I would heavily favor Kostya Tszyu. Especially due to styles. Kostya possessed several great qualities. Great strength and accuracy, he was a very responsible athlete and was always in great condition. And above all, he was very strong in mind and spirit. Manny certainly has similar qualities, but this is when we need to pay attention to detail. Manny is a genuine ballsy brawler who has since upped his game to legendary status and polished his craft. But, much like the young man we first saw win on showtime, he's still willing to fly in with blistering flurries all while lunging in. And it is one of his best weapons as a south paw. Tszyu on the other hand was deadly accurate with his punches. A dedicated jabber, with quality head movement. But, imo his best weapon vs pac would be his devastating right straight. He measured it almost perfectly and threw it with lethal intent. Very much a natural jr welter, his thick frame gave him a balance advantage, making him a master of sitting on that technique. Tzsyu by ko.
The defensive technique with the right is also a viable option but that'll server you better inside with your lead foot on the outside of your opponents back foot. It'll lead to different counters as well and from this position I feel a uppercut to the body is safest for you to defend yourself after and will inflict the greatest damage on your opponent. If your lead foot is inside your opponent then reaching with your right hand isn't the best choice. This is when weaving or rolling would suit you best, depending on your abilities and fighting philosophy.
I would say meeting the right with your outstretched left will have mixed success at best, unless parrying is really your forte and you have a solid grasp of how to displace force. Problem is you are meeting their strong hand thrown with leverage, with your weak hand from a more isolated position. You could sustain an injury to your arm/shoulder trying to do that, or just plain miss the timing and get clocked.
Should view their right as a potent weapon that's better to slip or dodge with footwork than just soak up on your guard. But I'd definitely suggest the high guard. Catch and shoot with it, as soon as that right is soaked up shoot the jab, or fire a left hook if they are in close.
Despite its risk, obviously a parry is advantageous because you can see your openings better, and even create new opportunity with it. It's just the riskier move and requires a higher level of skill to not backfire on you
You make a very good point about leaving a jab out. I think that the right whole he met with the left and cut short of it's potential. The catch and shoot technique is also good but as you said a more risky style. I think it really depends on distance and skill level. I'm not one to disagree, but I personally perfer to parry what's thrown at me a few times before deciding on what kind of counter to throw or if I'll try to weave away. There are endless options for this as each situation is different. But, blocking the right with the right just seems fundamentally wrong to me unless it's from one or two positions.
There are several ways to work off the cross/ straight. If both fighters are in a conventional stance at a reasonable range of engagement, then blocking with the left would serve you better. With a open palm you could stop it with just your hand then counter over the top with a jab. It should be kept in mind that during the open counter one should not drastically push the punch down, but should meet it half way and almost hit/ deflect it down to quickly counter with a jab. If you decide to use your left forearm, then you should hit/ deflect it up and away in order to counter with a straight right. It's really a matter of range to determine what defensive technique is approximate for the situation.
Canelo has a ton of options. Any of the champs at 154. Smith is probably the front runner. Canelo will probably continue to fight at 155. But Bradley and kell Brook could be next
The fight doctor, ferdie Pacheco was at a fight once, and a fighter died after being ko'ed and his head bounced off the canvas very violently. Pacheco was convinced it was because 3 ropes weren't enough to save a fighter when they are unconscious and falling back. He petitioned to have it universally changed and that is the why there are 4 ropes. To break the fall of a knocked out boxer.
He can still do a lot in the sport. He just needs to be sure the match making is smart. If he's going after money fights, they either need to be with punchers, or someone that will make a loss financially worthwhile, like Pac.
I feel like he needs a few confidence builders and maybe even a regional title. That Postol defeat did a lot to him. I agree with the poster above, a guy like cano is a good place to start.
I was at this fight with my sister. It was a great show. Curtis stevens fought Derek Findley in a hard fought 8 rounder. Then Fury and Cunningham absolutely stoled the show. The Knicks were playing the celtics in game 1 of their playoff series in the arena, so the whole garden was packed. Great afternoon of boxing.
I was at his only fight in America at MSG. And let me tell you I had the time of my life. He's such a fun personality. He really gets the crowd involved. Him and wlad will always make dreadful fights. But with smart match making he can really put on a show. Come on home Tyson!!!
Broner is going to fight someone like hank Lundy next. They won’t give him a top name right now. That’s the kind of future opponent broner is looking to fight.
Sure seems like it to me considering PBC/fans want to ignore or discredit him.
Ali: "Joe Frazier is an Uncle Tom. He works for the enemy."
Ali: "He's the other type Negro, he's not like me," "There are two types of slaves, Joe Frazier's worse than you to me … That's what I mean when I say Uncle Tom, I mean he's a brother, one day he might be like me, but for now he works for the enemy"
Thoughts?
I wouldn’t call him the new joe Frazier. There are too many differences in 60’s/ 70’s America and today. Plus Frazier and Ali and all those guys made fights with each other no questions asked. As far as the shade he gets from some fans, it’s a matter of preference. I don’t think PBC fans ( if such exclusive boxing fans even exist) think of him as a sell out. But the politics of sport to today may paint as being complacent. But I don’t think a former undisputed champ( 140) isn’t chasing greatness. Bud is a very good fighter and very respectable champion. Granted his reign isn’t the best in welterweight history, it’s far from the worse reigns there’s been in recent boxing at any category.
Or will he start complaining that he deserves a shot on Fury -Joshua winner?
He shouldn`t get a shot than. he should be pushed to fight Whyte for WBC mandatory.
If he loses I see him taking a easy fight with a relatively quick turn around. Then in a perfect world he goes after whyte. And winner gets the champ. But he probably just takes a easy showcase and the WBC somehow ranks him in their top 3 again
Sugar hill imho is a much better trainer because Banks plays it safety 1st & SH plays it offense 1st which is exactly what ggg needs,he should never have been dumb enough to think he can become Canelo late in his career. Before Canelo he would say defensive fighters were pvssies after Canelo he despite saying he won, decided to do a complete 180 on everything he ever stood for or fought like. Just my "biased" 2 cents,
Btw I think ggg can never beat CURRENT Canelo because Canelos too well rounded, but I think offensive ggg at his best & with a lil better strategy (especially if trained by Hill)he could continue to convince many ppl he won & maybe would even get the ko by going all out blitz, but Canelo imo will have easy work vs Banks trained ggg,ggg will never be anything but a great pressure/power fighter who relies on athleticism as much as a great jab,but who has average defense
To me he should accept that & use it to the fullest it will take him,til wheels fall off sorta speak, he's won't be unbeatable like he used to be vs lower tiers but only .1% of fighters ever have stretches where they seem unbeatable, imho if ggg had just honed his skills & stayed the same only Canelo beats him at mw,he would still be a favorite imo over 99%
Really spot on analysis
Post and discuss.........
It really depends. No good for title fights. But if it’s a couple of guys who want to fight for the fans and need to meet somewhere in the middle I’m all for it. Maybe a attraction type fight where both fighters are getting a nice payday and everyone knows they’re going to throw down.
Larry Donald was robbed against Valuev as well. I think Valuev is getting destroyed by the Klitschko brothers. Wladimir-Valuev is probably
an interesting fight at the time though given how vulnerable so many people considered him to be.
I think you’re right about him being destroyed. Wlad size and athleticism would really trouble him. I see it similar to his performance vs Wach.
So Adrian Broner is demanding 10$million for his return to the ring
Has made this known to Al Haymon and Showtime
Would also be willing to hear out Eddie Hearn if he has interest
Has Broner gone off his rocker ?
Is he in dire need of money ?
I certainly don’t think he is very deserving of this but I’m sure someone will come a knockin’ unfortunately
He’s asking for way too much. He desperately needs to string 2-3 wins together. 4 lower profile fights wouldn’t be out of the question at this point. The top guys are too good for him at the moment. And he’s going to struggle even with the b guys. But those b guys is where he currently belongs. $10 million is ridiculous
I get Tank being like wtf, but hasn't Tank turned down coming to work with someone at Mayweather's Gym that would likely include consulting with Floyd much more often in the past? Can't get THAT mad about sh^t when that's the case & you wanted to stick with your people.
That said he could probably get Floyd training him full time if he wanted to now & all this Devin stuff would stop on a dime. I just doubt he wants to reallllllly. Devin definitely seems more dedicated to staying in shape & learning than Tank is. Tank is already getting sidetracked by the celebrity of his status. I doubt when/if Devin reaches such heights he'll be coming in overweight multiple fights & seemingly be as unfocused during training camps as Tank is rumored to be.
Tank is most definitely getting sidetracked. It’s effecting his weight, which in turn will effect what his camps are dedicated to, weight loss camp or skills training camp. But as far as his actual skill set goes, I can understand why he’d decline Floyd. His coaches seem to be doing very well with him. But I don’t believe that’s the main factor to his decision to refuse to go to Vegas. His celebrity status in the DMV is probably the driving force behind staying. His emotion is both warranted and unwarranted. In the end it makes for a interesting future for all parties involved.
The WBC Board of Governors will meet Tuesday to decide the numerous requests from fighters seeking a shot at the 168-belt left vacant by David Benavidez. Requests are in from @Canelo @CallumSmith23 Benavidez, Azizbek Abdugofurov and Avni Yildirim.— Lance Pugmire (@pugboxing) August 17, 2020
Hmmmmm.............
Maybe Canelo vs Yildirim on the horizon
I think this is a decent fight if Kell Brook can make 147 safely. Brook is past his best but I don't buy that he is completely washed up either. Of course I would prefer to see Pacquaio-Crawford but Kell Brook isn't a terrible opponent.
Brook isn’t at his prime but he’s better then Crawford’s few opponents. He’s game and knows his way around the ring. He should give Bud a hard fight. It’s a good fight for tv
Canelo isnt stopping Ryder I'll tell you that much now. I'd see something like 8-4 Canelo as Ryder is big and Canelo will outbox and probably fight off the ropes especially early and middle rounds to conserve energy for counter shots
I hear what you’re saying, but canelo is stopping him late in this one. It’ll be a damned war with both men coming out different. Ryder is tough as they get and skilled but he’s out in 9-10.
🇲🇽🇬🇧 John Ryder has now put himself forward as a potential opponent for Canelo in September. The Mexican's team are reportedly seeking a cheaper option given he may have to fight behind closed doors and Billy Joe Saunders has ruled himself out.— Michael Benson (@MichaelBensonn) July 2, 2020
Would be a fun fight tbh......
Agreed. In the phone booth
