Ismayl's problem has always been his lack of head movement and just using his feet for defense. Grachev fight permanently damaged him. Don't feel bad, he gave it a good go. I just think fighting Kovalev at this stage of his career was stupid. Yeah, not the greatest promotional move by Roy Jones and his Square Ring guys (although I doubt Roy has anything to do with matchmaking or anything else for that matter). It was probably a chance to earn a bit more cash than he would have otherwise, and there was some small chance that maybe he could outbox Kovalev.

I appreciate GGG 10x more now. Adonis definitely has some craft to learn, but that power will make up for those deficiencies so long as his chin holds up. That's the remaining question.

I wouldn't say he's declined, but mentally, his drive is no longer there. Physically, he still has all his tools but it doesn't seem like hes got the same drive anymore. I wouldn't call that declined though, thats just a mental issue. Maybe due to being super religious now or having been at the top level has made his hunger disappear. People like to claim declined/physically deteriorated in order to validate the 40year old Marquez's brutal knockout and the fact that Manny hasn't KO'd anybody for a very long time. I think too much is made of both of these points. He hasn't really had a KO at 147 -- both Hatton and Cotto were either at 140 or basically at 140. His explosive power just never carried up to that weight. Additionally, the guys he's been fighting, as others have mentioned, have been iron-chinned or have absolutely clammed up into defensive shells after about three rounds. Hatton and Cotto both tried to fight with him and got caught. In terms of his mental state or passion, I just think he's doing what all great fighters do as they age. Look at Hopkins and Mayweather for instance -- at a certain point in their careers, they stopped relying on their physical gifts and stopped knocking people out. Likewise, Manny increasingly uses his intelligence, experience, and technical skills to beat his opponents. It doesn't always look as impressive -- e.g. Mayweather's victory over Cotto -- but it works and prolongs the career. Without question, Pacquiao has experience some marginal decline in his physical tools. But he should still be pretty heavily favored to beat anyone at 147 or 140 who isn't named Mayweather.

First off, good post TS, but Mexicans are definitely not known for head hunting. If anything, they're renowned for their commitment to attacking the body. I'll let my Mexican pride get the better of me and for the most part have rooted against pac when he fought mexicans, but I am a pacquiao fan. Heck, I was rooting for him against rios. In any case, like many Mexicans, I hated Pacquiao at first because he was blitzing our post-Chavez heroes. As a JMM fan, I was often rooting against him. But he's a sportsman who fights with dignity and courage, and that earned him respect and admiration from me and many others. He doesn't fight stylistically like a Mexican, but he has the same fighting spirit.

If GBP can't make the fight with Cotto, my money would be on Carlos Molina. Molina is on the short list, and he's been getting vocal about it in recent days. I'm not sure it's a credible PPV headliner (which is what Canelo's team is shooting for on March 8), but it's an easy and sensible fight to make.

I thought Tyson was great. He was very thoughtful and (to my mind) basically spot on. I agree with others -- it was nice to see him operating in a boxing context where he seemed exceptionally at home and articulate.

Naz was the top featherweight in the world for years, won every single belt at the weight. Broner hasn't done anywhere near what Naz did. You're right, but that's not really the question here. In terms of character and mentality, I actually think Broner is more susceptible to a complete self-destruction. It'll be interesting to see what happens from here out. I hope he doesn't get in any drunken car accidents.

But in this case, "exposed" is absolutely the right word. I know very few experienced boxing fans who thought Broner was a legit p4p guy. We could all see from a mile away his poor footwork, porous defense, difficulty handling combination punchers, and after the Paulie fight, the fact that he didn't carry his strength and power up to 147. And yet, there he was, on p4p list after p4p list. So yes ... "exposed."

Let's be honest here, a lot of people were just annoyed by Pac's fans, but as a fighter, Pac is much more respected and celebrated than Broner. There were a lot of people devastated by that loss. Broner losing is just a feel good story. You can't compare the two. As far as which fighter is less respected and was more deserving of a loss, it's clearly Broner. Agreed. I hate the unbridled P@ctards as much as the next guy -- in fact, the unreasonable nuthuggers of all stripes piss me off -- but there's no doubt that Broner is the more generally hated individual. Not that everyone hates him, but it's a big enough majority that it was damn near universal rejoicing on here. It wasn't the kind of mass phenomenon that JMM-Pac 4 was. This just felt like a purer kind of joy, though. You don't have the sh1tty questions about whether Maidana was juiced. Broner isn't a hero to an entire nation of long-suffering people (this is, in part, why I give native Pinoy P@ctards a little more leeway). Maidana running his fists through Broner's entire bullsh1t persona is a feel-good story all the way around.

That was definitely a gritty performance. He hung in there tough and made it a close competitive fight -- was not expecting that. Gotta give him a lot of respect. I also thought Orlando Cruz put up a gutsy performance in a losing effort last time out.

It's a strange thing -- I get the sense that Ward has a pretty substantial and loyal hometown following, puts up pretty decent HBO numbers, and is as widely respected as any fighter in the US (if not the world). And yet, there is constantly this question. In terms of the boxing community, insular as it is, he is very popular. The issue is that he has virtually no "crossover" popularity. I'm not sure why this is such a big deal -- only a handful of fighters have that kind of popularity and it isn't always tied to their ring performance (e.g. ethnic/national followings for guys like Hatton, Canelo, Cotto, etc. Not that they aren't or weren't excellent, but you get my point). How much crossover popularity does Hopkins have outside of Philly? What about Martinez, Mares, Rigo, or Donaire? Hell, Pernell Whitaker was plagued by questions about his popularity similar to those Ward now faces. He's a great fighter in a niche sport. To use one of my least favorite sayings ever, it is what it is.

At 152, Guerrero would just be too blown up and slow. Canelo would muscle him around and land the more impactful shots. I think he'd break Guerrero down to the body and eventually pull out a pretty comfortable decision, 8-4 or so.

Don't forget the injury. It required surgery if I'm not mistaken. That shoulder injury was absolutely horrific. He was limited, but powerful, as people have stated already. He had some potential and was a pretty good natural athlete. But once he lost that left hook, he had absolutely nothing to offer. Even his balls, which were huge and could pull him through any ordeal (again, consider that he fought 3/4 of that Tyspko bout with his shoulder basically detached from his body), evaporated after he ruined his shoulder.

Pac doesn't need to rematch Bradley as he beat him already and has beat JMM twice already. Beating him convincingly is a bit vague a comment......Pac beat his style nightmare twice that all that matters. If Pac can beat Rios more convincingly than anyone has beat Rios and then beats Floyd, is all Pac need to concentrate on now. Agreed. I'm not sure what a decisive victory over Bradley does for his legacy in the long term. That said, if Bradley keeps racking up victories, a stoppage or brutal beatdown of Bradley in a rematch would be another notch in his belt.

He would have fought Wills, and later in life, expressed dismay that he didn't. Dempsey even signed the contract to fight Wills. Tex Rickard (and Jack Kearns to a lesser degree) is to blame -- Rickard, for instance, refused to pay Dempsey in accordance with the Wills contract and essentially forced Dempsey out of the fight. Rickard wanted nothing to do with the so-called color line. Instead, he put him in the ring with Gene Tunney, and we all know how that turned out.

It's a little surprising to see that anyone's takeaway from the Pacquiao-Rios fight would be, in essence: "Pacman should retire."
