Chris Arreola vs Raphael Butler
What does it say about Chris Arreola's confidence, or his manager's confidence in him, when his next victim, er, "opponant", has won only one fight of his last 7? Raphael Butler is 1-5 with 1 NC going in against Arreola.
I posted somewhere else on here about big names padding their records with guys who are in reality, no-hopers.
I'm sure there are sharper, more worthy opponants out there for him to fight. Mismatches should be called "exhibitions" since we just about already know the outcome before the bell rings.
Not counting premature deaths such as Stanley Ketchel getting shot at age 24, Salvador Sanchez, etc, my #1 vote goes to Tony Ayala. Ike Ibeabuchi is up there also.
I'll always take Adamek over Arreola. Adamek would never risk coming into a fight as out of shape as Arreola has at times. I think the will & desire are deeper in Adamek.
It'll take a few more fights to see if Arreola is serious about his career. Releford had zero chances against him, nothing to hold him off with & was there just to get Arreola some work. The good side about it, from Arreola's point, is that he IS staying active. Time will tell the story.....
Yes, I'd watch this fight. If everything miraculously worked out where they ever did get into a contract signing, the press conferences alone would be a real hoot! Mayorga running his chops, Antonio "Cement" Margarito saying he didn't know his hands weighed 3 lbs more then normal (each)....& if we can get lucky enough to have Don King be the promoter.....oh yea! The sound bites would be great! I always loved listening to Don King talk. He'd make up words as he went along..."trickeration" comes to mind. He always added a nice WWF-like atmosphere to the goings on.
As for the fight....this has "slobber-knocker" written all over it! Bell rings, cornerman aims 'em at each other & they collide somewhere, anywhere they find each other. I can see a slower motioned Mancini vs Chacon type bang out. I like both of these fellas equally so I'd like it to end in a draw so we could do it all over again!
Let's keep our fingers crossed.
Am he would fold more due to the left hand jabs and big right hand landing on his face all day rather than the number of people in the attendance.
I agree.
He can't back out now. It would be his 3rd time against the Ks so he pretty much has to get in the ring and "face" whatever happens......
The crowd will just make the whole evening that much more unpleasant for him.
I always was a big fan of Big Daddy. But, this shows that his attorney's defence in his kidnapping case that Bowe was suffering "brain damage" was a lie. Or, are the boxing commisions not going to test him now?
Too late for Riddick. He was taking tremendous head shots in his two fights with Golota. So 12 years later, his brain has healed itself???
Sad story...
One of the best fighters of ANY generation. We were lucky to have seen him in our time.
Also, I love his WWF (WWE) type interviews. He's said some funny stuff over the years.
Haye is just getting his feet wet in the heavyweight division. A brutal KO over a fading Monte Barrett is another nice notch on Haye's resume. He has nice potential to go far.
But to be picking him this early in his heavyweight stage over someone who has been a heavyweight their whole career, AND, who's faced some big hitters himself and done well....I don't get it.
Seems like lots of guys are forgetting that Vitali was off a long time, came back against someone who lots of bandwagoneers claimed was the 2nd coming of Tyson and when Vitali KOed Sam Peter, well, now they're on David Haye's express.
David Haye is a dangerous puncher who seems like his head and his heart are both focused. I like him a lot. But being realistic, let's not bury Vitali Klitschko just yet. You're only as good as your last fight, and Dr Ironfist looked awesome last time out.
Lets see David Haye against some more heavyweights before we crown him the P4P best in the world. Personally, I'd love to see him against someone like Juan Carlos Gomez next. Each time Haye fights one of the big boys, we get a better idea of where he's at and where he's going. Right now, too early to crown him the King.
i had a dream about it last night,..... as Vitali's leg fell of during training.
Davros,
That's some funny stuff! You made me laugh out loud. Good one!
I'll be thinking about my wife's leg(s) when I get in bed later, but that really was clever!
I agree with you and there's no rush. I'm just asking to see if you guys think he can go up in weight and be competitive at the new weight? He should probably stay at LHW and try and rule and dominate the division like Bernard Hopkins did at MW!
I know that PB1, you was just asking opinions. It's a good and interesting thread you got going here!
And I concur with your assessment as well.
From Carlos Zarate, Alfonzo Zamora, Wilfredo Gomez, Ruben Olivares to Duran, Julian Jackson, Gerald McClelland, to Sonny Liston, Foreman, Shavers, etc., each division has had its natural born killer hitters.
How about skinny guys like Breland in the amateurs, and Hearns with all that leverage! Hearns put guys on ice.
Why not stay at lightheavyweight and build a legacy? Unify titles, clean out the division, fight hard, fight often and dominate. Isn't that how legands are made?
Moving up to face the super-sized heavyweights of today would negate his tremendous skills. He'd be mid-level at best. If others could do it so easily, then it would have been done more often.
If he's as good as everyone is saying, he may be the next dominant fighter. But, at 175.
I can see him moving up to Crusierweight towards the end of his career, but why now? What's the rush? Unless he's having trouble making 175, I think he should build from where he's sitting right now.
Yes, but he is kind of right: Cus wanted to build a Great Champion; the Youngest HW Champion. That's something to remember in history and Cus wanted to be a part of that. He let Tyson in because of his natural talent and size. He put Teddy on Mike to build a Champion. Mike would get in trouble and Teddy would want to discipline him and Cus would let it go...which he had never done in the past...according to Teddy. Cus was going against his own principles for the sake of having One last "Great" fighter that would make Cus remembered. Cus thought Mike could truly be the Greatest ever as long as Mike stays the course and stays motivated.
This isn't to say Cus didn't care for him, because I do think he did...just like a lot of trainers/mentors can start to build that type of relationship with their young fighters.
You can say that Cus's fighters were his kids.
Torres and Patterson all said Cus cared for them; that's the type of person he was. Rooney was close with him as well and had great respect for him.
I think in the end, Teddy felt betrayed Cus sold out his own values for the sake of this young brute named Mike Tyson. But Cus was desperate at his age.
Boxing great,
Mugwump and Benny Leonard pretty much nailed it on the head. If you read teddy Atlas's book "Atlas", he goes into great detail explaining what mugwump and Benny Leonard just said.
Cus cared for the guys he allowed around him, but because of what they could provide him. Personally, I feel like Cus turned on Atlas because Cus figured he could get more out of keeping Tyson around than Teddy, who demanded Tyson abide by all the rules Cus made that everyone else there had to abide by. Everybody that is, except Tyson.
My bottom line is that as long as Jimmy Jacobs and Kevin Rooney were in the picture, Tyson at least made an effort to be decent. After all his original guys were dead or fired, his new crew (Rory & company) did their very best to pat Mike's back, rub his belly and tell him how great he was. Tyson bought into the lie that he was too great to have to train, and he gave a large part of himself over to the gangster life that he really craved all along.
No more barriers, no more rules....no more greatness.
"Here's a guy that when he knocks out fighers, he wins a lot of fights" - John Madden. "Boom"
Never heard that one dans01234, but it sure was funny!
My pick, ain't nobody but me going to like it. I'll miss Lamps, but I'll miss Larry even more. But my dream pick after they're gone would be Teddy Atlas & Max. They rag each other a lot, both love the sport and know it inside out.
There would be insightful commentating as well as back and forth good natured cracks at each other, which I always like hearing.
r.i.p that name sounds very familier, 2nd referre in my time to take his own life, r.i.p
Really, the 3rd. Richard Green, Mitch Halpern and now Toby Gibson. Very sad.
Seems like if you seen one John Ruiz fight, you've seen em all. Punch and grab, punch and clutch. Close, ugly disputed endings.
I'd like to see some fresh faces. Ruiz is winding down anyway.
Arreola is more exciting, but Ruiz has all that experience with big names. Right now, ruiz W12 (split, of course). Another few fights for Chris, I lean towards him.
Since W12(S) is not an option, I'll muddle the waters and vote "Draw". :)
why is it mostly HW's
Good question. Does seem to be a disproportionate amount of heavy's w/ issues than the lighter guys.
I remember Bruce Curry (Donald's brother) having mental health problems. Charlie "Devil" Green, a lightheavyweight from the 1970's had a breakdown and killed some people if I remember right. Middleweight Randy Turpin, who fought Ray Robinson, killed himself, as did lightheavyweight Freddie Mills.
Tony Ayala is not right.
As for heavyweights, don't forget Trevor Berbick.
i thought the future of the heavyweight division was ike and tua wars fighting for each others titles...... silly me.
here's ike's last pic i know of:
http://fightnews.ru/mt/archives/Ibeabuchi%20Ike.jpg
That picture blew my mind! I can't believe how he porked up!
How about a future in the UFC?
Anybody know what Kimbo is doing next year??? :boxing:
Ok justched the vid of Benn talking on fighting Roy Jones, well game eh!?
But Listen to this, no Bull Shit, I met Nigel years later at my local Nightclub where he was DJ'ing and got talking boxing to him for a bit.
I mentioned that it was a pitty a Jones fight never came off and do u know what he said? "Na im glad he'd have killed me!"
And he was serious, he added he woulda fought anybody but now knew that Jones was on another level. Jones hadnt lost to Tarver at this point by the way. Very Honest i was impressed
I have three thoughts on this....
1. Isn't is something how, after a fighter is retired, they can open up, relax and let their guard down, not having to always talk smack and brash and bold. The older version of George Foreman never talked smack, but was humble and even funny. And he still beat people up good!
The Nigel Benn at his peak would have NEVER admitted that publically, even if he thought it was true. Active fighters have that machismo going 24/7.
Humberto "Chiquita" Gonzalez would have said he could have whipped Sonny Liston when he was active!
2. It's nice to see that Nigel has found some sort of peace outside of boxing.
I agree that RJ would have beat him, but it would have been a great fight.
Nigel Benn was always someone I enjoyed watching fight.
3. Now, if you can get some kind of rational statement from Chris Eubank about HIS chances vs RJ, THAT would be something! :)
ike would **** up kimbo.
I believe he may KILL him!
If a guy like Ike fought the guys that Kimbo fought in some back alley with bare knuckles like Kimbo did, I say Ike ends up KILLING somebody!
Can you imagine some bad a$$ prison gang leader who never followed boxing getting in Ike's face?
I bet big money that the prison guards made some kind of announcement over the loud speakers that the big dude getting off the bus with the tweety birds circling his head is NOT to be bothered! :dead:

Naw he is too old and too crazy.
He would be considered mentally unstable and would get denied a license.
What duh???
They gave TYSON a license!! Ike CAN'T be crazier than Mike!
Thanks fellas.
I didn't know he gained that much weight or that he was going to be deported. Good info that I guess spells "The End" of what could have been a nice career.
KImbo's ko from a ballerina jab is probably one of the most pathetic kos ever.
Didnt he beat Mercer because he took Mercer straight to the floor rather then stading there and trade which is the only Gameplan mercer and the world thought kimbo would do?
I didnt see the fight myself just heard he took him down almost straight away
Here's the link to that fight....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UcmIQ4xLrY
I was SO disappointed when Ray lost.
KImbo's ko from a ballerina jab is probably one of the most pathetic kos ever.
I couldn't have said it better. Plus, how did he EVER beat Ray Mercer?????
Mercer was one of my favorite heavys because of his toughness and chin.
Then, Kimbo seemed to lay down to say "screw you" to CBS.
The "punch" that kocked Kimbo down made the puch that Ali floored Liston with in Lewiston, Maine look like Razor Ruddock's "smash"!
CBS will probably try to hype a rematch to squeeze one more "fight" out of him.
What would Fedor have done to him???
He's not arrogant at all i dont know where u guys get that from..Their's alot worse out there
I agree. Joe is NOTHING like Naseem Hamed.
And personally, I like it when a fighter shows some bravado and does some smack talk. Ali, Ricardo Mayorga, Mike Tyson, Fernando Vargas, Roberto Duran all talked smack leading up to their big fights. And as soon as it's over, they're hugging the guy they just tried to kill.
We got a great sport, with all kinds of personalities. That's one thing that made the WWF (WWE) so popular. The personalities, feuds and storylines made it sort of like a soap opera for men.
Boxing could always use some more pizzazz. Some of that smack talk not only is some funny stuff, it helps attrack new fans to our great sport.
I would favor Golota in this. yep. nut punches all day, baby.
plus Golota is better than Ruiz, and Ruiz gave Valuev all he could handle...ok yea, Golota is 40, but...
I agree here.
Imagine Andy swinging for Valuev's midsection. Valuev's cajones will sound like a pair of speed bags!
I also think that Golota is better than Ruiz and a match up with Golota WILL sell tickets because it's a two-for-one deal. You get to see a fight PLUS nobody ever knows how Golota will snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
Besides the two Riddick Bowe fights that he was winning, remember how great he looked against Michael Grant. Then, Golota's brain told him he was in danger of winning, so he shut it down again.
Golota is one of the heavyweights I will always enjoy watching & I'll root hard for him also. He's a character just made for the WWF (WWE) and we in boxing get him!
