He most likely beats Chavez Jr. but I think Canelo beats Cotto. Canelo fights like a bigger version of Cotto.
Canelo fights like a slow, bulky, lost mma-version of a pseudo-Cotto at best. Miguel beats both these guys 7 days a week and twice on Sunday...
That's color theory 101, and you're correct. But that has little to do with what I'm pointing out here.
The shape of the gloves are entirely different from other Cleto Reyes gloves. If you take a look at past fights where Pacquiao is wearing his usual red gloves, the sides are rounded and smooth, whereas these yellow gloves have a hard edge and flat punching surface. The shape is different and it's plain to see. It's just unusual, which is why this is being pointed out in the first place.
The unfortunate part of this is that while there is an actual story here, it's being misconstrued to fit some ideological argument that someone might have against Manny Pacquiao.
The gloves are different. It's not up for debate, and I disagree with Eaner on this one. These gloves Pacquiao wore are unlike any that Cleto Reyes has made so far, and most certainly not like those white gloves you've posted pictures of. The hard edge of underlying material beneath the leather is far more pronounced and apparent in the yellow gloves.
We have ultra high definition images of these fighters and can analyze basically every facet of visual information that results from a professional prize fight. This is the result of being able to do so. I noticed the odd shape of the gloves immediately - the first time I saw them. I posted a thread about this and someone seems to have taken cues from that and posted this youtube video and now this resulting thread.
This is detracting from what started this entire thing to begin with, which is a simple question:
Why are these gloves different?
Yeah, they're obviously Cleto Reyes gloves, the logo on the gloves makes that obvious. What's strange is that they weren't shaped like typical Cleto Reyes gloves. They were more "square" in appearance than the usual Reyes gloves. They actually looked more like a 10oz. version of the Cleto Reyes training gloves...
Not nearly as funny as the time he was mocking Cotto a few years back with his hands on top of his head punching really slowly.
One of his entourage members was yelling "Hold on now, those punches cost money!" haha
Mayweather / Cotto this generation's Leonard / Hagler?
Seems like a good reference point for this upcoming fight. Obviously not exactly alike, since no one has Hagler's chin, but it seems like the matchup is reminiscent of Leonard and Hagler. Thoughts?
Blueprint to beat Floyd = Jab and feints?
We saw Oscar's jab give Floyd problems, and Shane feinted to the body with those lazy jabs to land the 2nd round overhand right (a la Tommy Hearns).
Seems like at least a glimpse of the blueprint to beat Floyd is to have a textbook, strong jab (we already know this, pretty much) but to also use feints.
Thoughts?
Miguel has the best chance of beating Floyd out of any opponent Floyd has faced since Oscar or Diego / Juan Luis...
But will he beat him? No, probably not. I hope I'm wrong though.
Wow this is barely a 2 minute clip and Floyd has already managed to contradict himself.
"I feel like if a fighter has already lost before, losing is in their mind, somewhere."
I thought Cotto was an "undefeated" fighter though? Well at least Floyd mentioned that he could care less about what Cotto is doing. I sense some trash talk which might make this 24/7 decent at best.
He considers him to be undefeated because of the circumstances surrounding his two losses. He's not saying he didn't lose both fights. It's very simple.
Physical feats
Lee's phenomenal fitness allowed him to perform numerous exceptional physical feats:
Lee's speed in terms of reacting + punching from a distance of three feet away was determined to be around five hundredths of a second (0.05 second); from five feet away it was around eight hundredths of a second (0.08 second).
Lee could take in one arm a 75 lb barbell from a standing position with the barbell held flush against his chest and slowly stick his arms out locking them, holding the barbell there for several seconds.
In a speed demonstration, Lee could snatch a dime off a person's open palm before they could close it, and leave a penny behind.
Lee performed one-hand push-ups using only the thumb and index finger.
Lee performed 50 reps of one-arm chin-ups.
Lee could cause a 300-lb (136.08 kg) bag to fly towards and thump the ceiling with a sidekick.
Lee held an elevated v-sit position for 30 minutes or longer
can norris do that?
Nope, didn't happen.
I always see the question asked: How will you attack Mayweather? How will you break through his defense?
I suggest a paradigm shift.
How about going in with a plan to DEFEND against Mayweather? How will Floyd feel when he can't hit you at will? When he can't get his offense off? When he feels uncomfortable because he isn't piling up points?
Now, you may ask :"Floyd's offense is not all that. Why should I be worried about his offense?"
That's the person from OUTSIDE the ring saying that. Once you get into the ring, those punches don't feel great. The guy has 25 KO's. Corrales, Hatton. Gatti. Good fighters. He knocked down Marquez. His offense had Shane completely discouraged. He isn't quite the feather-fist you imagine. Guys aren't trying to walk through him.
If I was going to fight Floyd, I would be focused on a BALANCED fight plan. I would be concerned with my defense as much - if not more - than my offense.
Believe me: Floyd expects every opponent to attack him. Judah did. Hatton did. Oscar did. Shane did. Ortiz will.
Flip the script. Give Floyd something to think about. Make him have to come out of his shell OFFENSIVELY.
For discussion....thoughts?

This is why Emanuel Augustus was his toughest fight. It's not so much the fighter's faults as it is the trainers. They watch the tapes and decide that they're obviously going to be able to get past his shoulder roll and catch him with a good shot, so they make that the game plan. Max Kellerman even stated to Floyd that it seems as though his toughest opponents are defensive-minded fighters. I don't remember what Floyd's response was (if anyone has the clip, please post it)
He would need specialized training first, even with this supreme knowledge and experience in other 'genres' of fighting.
Mainly, he would need to get used to the distance in boxing. Boxers need to be comfortable being much closer to their opponent than in mma. Also, the stance is different, you can slip punches differently. His opponent would be able to get away with defensive moves in boxing that wouldn't have worked at all in mma, so he wouldn't be used to seeing them or prepared to capitalize on them...
He must weigh, what... 185-195lbs. in this video? It's incredible how he was able to cut down and have such incredible stamina at 147 for all those years...
Cotto would give Thomas Hearns the most trouble. He never did well against brawlers, but didn't have trouble with boxers.
But this is all conjecture, since apparently, Manny wins in a streetlight with present-day Mike Tyson via KO.... so who knows.
1) Don't insult me.
2) When I say, "would give him the most trouble," - I'm saying that Cotto would last more rounds than the others, not win the fight. Emmanuel Steward said the same thing in an interview a few years ago when asked this very same question. Who trained Thomas Hearns? Emmanuel Steward.
3) Thomas Hearns is my favorite fighter, not Cotto.
He's training early for multiple reasons. The new thing in fitness now is the sodium cleanse. I've done it multiple times before bouts and before meets/tourneys in HS.
He probably walks around 180+ of water and sodium, the idea is to at least walk around 165-175 of Muscle/water/salt. About 6-10lbs of water/salt and the rest being abcess fat that he will strip off his frame to make weight. This will make sure he keeps whatever strength he has at 175.
Although on "roids", Mosley used this method of training. Walking around around 165-170 he was benching over 350lbs, big feat considering his size. He'd maintain the strength going into a fight.
This is a method of power, probably something new Margaritos team is doing as he's been known for endurance and accumulation, not power. Arizas method of training is simular, but it's for muscle endurance instead of maximum strength. Though weaker overall, they keep their strength going late thus making them stronger in the long run. I guess the idea is get his strength out of the way now, so they can handle endurance/technique/tactics during camp, and whatever else comes with their usual camp.
Seems they really want to get rid of any skeptics there may be about the first cotto fight. I'm definitely interested. Hope he doesn't overtrain.
Good insight. Thanks for adding that...
Looks like he's doing Crossfit exercises now. Does he have a new conditioning coach?
Box jumps, ring pushups, walking lunges, 70lbs. kettle bell swings... that's all cross fit stuff.
Kelly Pavlik wins this fight by KO. If they fight ten times, Kelly knocks him out ten times.
Pavlik has never had trouble with brawlers or punchers (Miranda) - he only struggles against boxers (Hopkins) and guys with super hand speed and reflexes (Martinez). He basically walked Miranda down, and Edison Miranda is a harder puncher than Arthur Abraham.
It would be an exciting fight, for sure, since both guys are brave, devastating punchers - but Pavlik takes it.
