I think he makes top 10 I'd guess around seven or eight. I think longevity is a big deal and people who rank him below a lot of ATG heavyweights don't take his physical characteristics into account. He is, in my opinion, the best giant to ever grace the ring. Unlike most men of his size he doesn't seem to possess a lot of the physical drawbacks that come with the height. He's not built too thin, doesn't have weight troubles, doesn't have bad stamina, and his hand speed is tremendous for someone that size. I think he would give most ATG competitors a lot of trouble, including everyone's highly lauded Tyson who always had trouble with actually skilled taller fighters who fight tall. Tyson has said himself he doesn't think he could have beat him.
Personally I don't see the backhand as being effective, the hammerfist is only going to be used from a mounted position like in MMA. Both bear significant chance of injuring your hand.
That said I don't think the back hand should be illegal because I don't see any extra risk to your opponent and alot of guys hit with backhands by mistake when throwing unorthodox jabs. It wouldn't change the game because its a useless strike and it would cut down on unneeded penalty calls. Hearns is a good example, that flicker jab had to hit a couple of people with the back hand every now and then but it was probably too fast for the ref to tell.
I think that the styles make fights card is less likely to win Khan a match against Floyd than it is to make him lose, despite the fact that Khan is better than Maidana in almost every way he is also is in possession of a style that was tailor made to give Maidana a loss. I honestly don't think its a style that works well in the other matchup since it requires beating Mayweather in a straight up boxing match on points.
Khan more than likely can't knock him out, and would get outpointed by a narrow margin most of the fight. I think Money would be a lot more cautious with Khan as well. That said Mayweather's reflexes are waning and Khan is a fast guy so I could easily see it going to a close decision in the other direction.
I have always thought that Mayweather would be more vulnerable to someone who could cut off the ring and lure him into a brawl. Maidana could have won if his footwork and ring control were better.
Second Go
Okay don't no if anyone is checking, but yet again I appreciate all the feedback. Your guys' advice was extremely helpful. Here are the results I noticed from my second session.
-Head movement worked to a tee, opponent could barely lay a hand on me and I had much more success coming forward and landing a variety of punches from sway. Even managed to land a counter straight at one point.
- Head movement sapped my energy and caused a good amount of pain in my feet and ankles?
- Setting up the body shots with jabs and feints led to me landing a large amount of body blows and I also started throwing straights to the solar plexus after some reading (this worked well).
-I had a much easier time seeing the punches coming (maybe I was less excitable idk)
-Opponent still used lead hand to push me as I was coming in and hit me with combos.... I don't know what causes it, it's like I'm losing my ability to see his punches as I duck in or something.
-Guard changeup plus rigidity worked wonderfully. Couldn't feel a thing through my guard but did get my arms punched a lot more.'
Verdict- I still suck but I'm getting better. My conditioning is crap, and I gassed a lot quicker because of the increased activity. My balance sucks, like really really sucks and is worse with the head movement. I almost fell over after I landed a straight to the body because he rolled with it. I got elbowed in the forearm when I went for a shovel hook to the body and let me tell you that was not fun. It still hurts to tense it or move it.
No it was his first time sparring too, I just only mentioned the things I did wrong because those were the things that bothered me about it. He kept leaning into my left hook which in a real match would have had him down at the least, and he got cornered easily which led to me landing a lot of body shots. I do plan on working the head movement drills as much as possible because I noticed that he missed me a lot when I moved my head naturally rather than trying to dodge, it was more of a timing thing I guess. It looked like a dodge but really I was just moving my head right before he threw the punch...if that makes sense.
And I'll try to keep my guard tighter/ closer to my face at times with more rigidity.
I don't think I went full retard but it just seemed like all the things I practiced stopped working so I stuck to the basics. Honestly I could have refined my techniques more during the session instead of abandoning my more complex tools because I became discouraged.
It wasn't precisely a gym war but we did go harder than we should have probably.
Thanks for all the advice guys, if you have anything else let me know I'm looking for tips anywhere I can and trying to keep an open mind.
As far as Broner making more money than Maidana well lets put it this way, money can't get you better fundamentals, or make you a better boxer.
Boxing isn't about money.
The guy had less training than me and was a little wild in the way he threw, he also switched stance from regular to southpaw twice mid round which was weird. Yeah my balance was ****e, and my conditioning/ strength are pretty mediocre. I think my jab is pretty good and the thing I have worked on the most. I do definitely need use it to set the table more often sometimes I lead with my back hand without thinking about it and like you said Syf I think I was giving away that I was going to the body way too early (didn't set up with the jab kind of went in with my head down each time which was a clear sign). This guy I was sparring had a real natural fighting instinct so I think he could see my intent alot easier than I could see his.
Your advise was very concise and useful Syf I'm gonna have another sparring session soon with the same opponent and I'll let y'all know how it goes.
Thanks for the advice on Arthur Abraham btw I just watched his match with Jermain Taylor and his guard was simple, effective, and became an easy reference point to practice my own.
Any one know of anywhere to watch the fight he just had with Jesus Angel Nerio? I don't know what happened but I'm trying not to find out without watching.
Much as I hate to say it I see Money winning a majority decision here. I mean I love Chavez he's one of my favorite fighters but Floyd would just hold him at arms length and outpoint him most of the fight. Cutting off the ring is nigh impossible when he does that crazy duck and run maneuver of his (which I'm suprised he hasn't gotten caught on). Maybe if Chavez could accumulate enough body blows and slow Floyd down I could see some real damage settling in but by that point in the fight it would more than likely be too late. Still I'd give him 2-1 odds.
I've heard most coaches say that about the chin tucking. I find it weird that you don't see it more in the Pros. A lot of guys, even some of the best, don't keep it constantly tucked. I've been working on that though. But oh well, even if I don't have that natural granite chin and end up not being able to do anything besides train or maybe do some amateur competition I'd be happy just to learn. Boxing is amazing.
Yeah, I don't think I have one of those faces (durable looking), which kind of sucks but I won't let anything short of getting knocked out easily discourage me. I know that as of yet none of the guys mentioned have quite the short thin jaw or chin that I posess. Its not like I have no chin, but every single boxer I've seen has what seems to me a huge jaw compared to other people I've seen....even the glass jawed ones.
you've got to make the leap between a man being "durable" and being strong, but i generally think that's appropriate. is it really so much of a stretch to think that stronger men take a better shot? of course not. that's common sense.
Makes sense to me. Its too bad there is no data about what makes a person take a good shot, since obviously the experiment would have to be silly. Whose gonna risk brain damage by allowing you to knock them out for the sake of data? I'm not worried about strength though. I've always been sort of a strong guy. Of course I'm too short to be as heavy as I am in boxing, I'd have to cut a lot of weight so who knows how that would affect me. I've heard that many boxers with weak chins have gotten better at taking punches after moving up in weight presumably because of thicker legs and necks (Miguel Cotto)?
I have worked on a lot of neck strengthening as I've always heard that its important. I do neck bridges.
I have noticed there are a lot of guys with pronounced jawlines and chins who have a glass jaw. But I wonder if anyone can come up with a guy who has relatively no chin or a weak jawline who can take a good hard punch...cause like I said it seems to me that in general I cant find any really successful boxers who have small chin/jawline. Good point though.
This just seems to further my belief that guys who have wide ass jaws are hard to knock out and that it is mostly about face shape. Maybe the fellas who have wide jaws but are glass just have bad nerve placement?
I literally LOL'd at "Julio Caesar Square Head".
I'm so easily amused. :lol1:
Its funny cause its true. Wow! I've never seen anyone with a face like that...freak of nature. LOL
You know Marvin Hagler doesn't have that large of a chin (it is a wide chin though) or wide jaw but he was impossible to knock out. Only hit the canvas once in his whole career and it looked like a slip but was ruled a knockdown.
However I've also heard that he has a natural cushion of muscle enclosing his entire head (like a built in helmet). Freak. One of my favorites though.
Hearns broke his hand on that skull.
That Bugsy Malone bit made me laugh so hard thought I blew out an ulcer. Personally I really enjoyed the A****a No Joe movie based off the manga of the same name. Also enjoyed Cinderella Man, think Ali was good but I honestly don't remember it that well watched it when I was much younger.
I personally think the Rocky movies are highly overrated. Of course maybe its an age thing but they seem really corny to me when I try to go back and watch them. Other bad boxing movies would include Counter Punch, and Teen Wolf Too hehe.
