I've seen a few films in my time and was wondering what you folks think the greatest and worst boxing films of all time are. I don't think there are many good ones it seems as if boxing movies have always had pitfalls.
Recently watching that horrible piece of trash "Dempsey" had made me think of posting this. Have fun.
That Bugsy Malone bit made me laugh so hard thought I blew out an ulcer. Personally I really enjoyed the A****a No Joe movie based off the manga of the same name. Also enjoyed Cinderella Man, think Ali was good but I honestly don't remember it that well watched it when I was much younger.
I personally think the Rocky movies are highly overrated. Of course maybe its an age thing but they seem really corny to me when I try to go back and watch them. Other bad boxing movies would include Counter Punch, and Teen Wolf Too hehe.
all the obvious films have been mentioned, so i'll trow out a couple of forgotten ones:
play it to the bone, with woody harrelson and antonio banderas
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0196857/
diggstown, with james woods and louis gossett jr.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0104107/?ref_=sr_2
both were entertaining if my memory serves correctly, but it has been quite some time since i've seen either.
thanks bro, I have seen play it to the bone and is fun movie to watch as well but I have yet to see diggstown...

for most of us movies are for entertainment, that's why rocky the movie were great movies, well at least for me rocky 1-4, this gave a lot of attention to boxing, heck Stallone is in BHOF for these movies...
Million Dollar Baby was good watch but did not like the tragic ending..
Raging bull is the best movie associated with boxing, the rocky films are the most fun too watch, but for me the great white hype is my favirote. The dynamic between Rev. Sultan and Julio escobar ( Jackson and Marin ) is exactly how I believe it was between don king and don Jose suliaman in the 90s.
Raging Bull is the greatest movie that has anything to do with boxing.
^^ This. "The great white hype" is alright, so is "the fighter". I like the rocky movies for entertainment, but they don't have anything to do with boxing. "Ali" was also alright.
Oh, and "Cinderella man" was surprisingly good. The story of Jim Braddock is very underestimated as one of the greatest upsets in HW boxing history. "The hurricane", not really boxing, but still a great movie.

Against the ropes has got to be the worst.
I love boxing films......the rockys take some beating for the fun factor.
But all the ones mentioned above were good films.
Would love to see Denzel do a Don King film.
i really dont like boxing movies, they are incorrect in so many ways it just starts to annoy me after a while.
the rocky movies are ****, i dont understand how ppl involved with real boxing can reference them during fights. they showed boxing in a terrible light imo in addition to being completely unrealistic.
there have been a few boxing films i enjoyed though, mainly because of the story outside the ring. those films would be raging bull, ali, cinderella man and the fighter. they all had compelling storys outside of the terrible fight scenes, being true storys made it better of course. great white hype and undisputed were alright too.
Cinderella Man is probably my favorite.
Touching story based on James J. Braddock a fighter who just fell down from the top from like a 20-0 record and just started losing and became a former shell of him self. Got his licensed removed, and during the Great Depression got a chance at a comeback and in turn became the Heavyweight Champ.
Great, great movie.
Great white hype was funny in how it poked fun at so much that is wrong with boxing.
I remember spitting out my water at damon wayons telling his trainer
" I will be in the ring in a second, I just wanna finish watching the sex scene in dolemite"
or
"My blackness wont let me lose to that kid"

The one I like best, and for me the most true to life story was the "Set-Up" which starred Robert Ryan. An advantage in this film was that Ryan had had considerable boxing experience. It's black and white.
The Great White Hype is the most underrated boxing movie of all time~
It is funny but you probably can't get closer to the current state of boxing than that~
I came in here to say that lol
