I've been training boxing for a few weeks and got kind of worried when I noticed something. It seems that every boxer I see who is famous has a fairly pronounced chin and jawline. I was wondering, if you don't have these things does that mean that you would be one of those people who have an innate glass jaw?
I can't seem to find a single boxer who, like me, has a jawline and chin that are rounded and short (and also not that wide).
Of course I know I won't really know until I get in the ring but seeing as how I won't be ready for that for at least a little while longer I was just wondering if anyone could shed light on the situation. (I have been punched a few times bare knuckle but never hit flush on the chin).
I've heard most coaches say that about the chin tucking. I find it weird that you don't see it more in the Pros. A lot of guys, even some of the best, don't keep it constantly tucked. I've been working on that though. But oh well, even if I don't have that natural granite chin and end up not being able to do anything besides train or maybe do some amateur competition I'd be happy just to learn. Boxing is amazing.
You know Marvin Hagler doesn't have that large of a chin (it is a wide chin though) or wide jaw but he was impossible to knock out. Only hit the canvas once in his whole career and it looked like a slip but was ruled a knockdown.
However I've also heard that he has a natural cushion of muscle enclosing his entire head (like a built in helmet). Freak. One of my favorites though.
Hearns broke his hand on that skull.
Lol, you mean he's a loser. 13 losses.
The most notable fight I remember him from was his bout with Pernell.
Could take hard shots to that block head.
lots of fighters have lots of losses. that doesn't mean that they're bad fighters. he'll be able to tell his grandkids about the time he had winky wright ready to go.
some of those argentines can take big shots.
Tyson best shot wouldn't even budge Jay Leno.
Every boxer would be head hunting Jay. That chin looks too delicious to abandon go to the body ...

This just seems to further my belief that guys who have wide ass jaws are hard to knock out and that it is mostly about face shape. Maybe the fellas who have wide jaws but are glass just have bad nerve placement?
I literally LOL'd at "Julio Caesar Square Head".
I'm so easily amused. :lol1:
Its funny cause its true. Wow! I've never seen anyone with a face like that...freak of nature. LOL

That jawline is ingrained in my memory forever more. His mom must've had a very difficult birth.
nobody is going to know who that is. the only reason i know who it is is because i am a loser.
for the edification of the forum, that's julio caesar vasquez, a former champion at 154 and an argentine. he's best known for a win over winky wright, who he had reeling around the ring during the early stages of wright's career.

Sponge Bob will suck you dry and spread your juices all over the canvas.
This cat's only been KO'd 3X his entire career (1987 -2009) ... You could ask to rent his mug for a week ...

If a guy with a chin shaped like this starts, don't hit him, you'll break your hand.

Strangely he has a similar bone structure to Rigo avi only on a larger scale.
you've got to make the leap between a man being "durable" and being strong, but i generally think that's appropriate. is it really so much of a stretch to think that stronger men take a better shot? of course not. that's common sense.
Makes sense to me. Its too bad there is no data about what makes a person take a good shot, since obviously the experiment would have to be silly. Whose gonna risk brain damage by allowing you to knock them out for the sake of data? I'm not worried about strength though. I've always been sort of a strong guy. Of course I'm too short to be as heavy as I am in boxing, I'd have to cut a lot of weight so who knows how that would affect me. I've heard that many boxers with weak chins have gotten better at taking punches after moving up in weight presumably because of thicker legs and necks (Miguel Cotto)?
