I don't have to read it again, Cotto's face or the fact he had to be taken to the hospital after the fight were not because of AM's chin, it was because of his fists. Everybody knows AM is going to have problems with skilled & fast boxers at first, but by that token, he outworks them to even things out in the later rounds. With your theory then Mayweather was lucky to be born with all that speed, PWill was lucky to be born that tall, I guess every elite fighter is lucky to be born with their talents. Bottom line is every elite fighter gets to where they're at because they dedicate themselves in the gym and use their god given talents to the best of their abilities.
He wasn't born with talent like Mayweather, Mosley, DLH, Tyson, etc. But on the other hand, he does use the most of what he was given, Chin, gameness(will to win, no matter what the circumstances might be), add the fact that his conditioning is second to none, and that's what offsets his deficiencies. He's never going to outbox anybody, no matter how hard he works in the gym, so he works harder on what has made him what he's right now. He'll never be flashy, but he'll outwork you.
I got to see his fight with Juan LaPorte live. I was about 15 rows up from the floor, so I had a real good view and close enough to hear the punches. I still have the ticket stubs somewhere, he'll always be my favorite boxer. He was one of the most brutal body punshers I've ever seen, he didn't have the 1 punch K.O. power, which made it more brutal because he literally broke down his opponents. I still remember like yesterday, when the news came out that he was gone. Very sad day.
I take JL in a late rds TKO, Gomboa is quick and might try to force the pace, but Linares is a very technically skilled fighter that will dissect you with body & head combos. I also give the power edge to JL.
I don't hate Tony, I just think he's getting a little too much attention from the Cotto win. People are now matching him up against all time greats and giving him great chances at winning.
Honestly I have nothing but respect for him. He's a throwback fighter who's earned his keep. What he lacks in talent and technique he makes up for with balls and heart. He's not afraid to fight anybody, and even when he loses he just dusts himself off and comes back big.
I agree with you Bringer. Nothing more I can add on this.
I don't understand why people make these kind of statements, PWill & Marg are big WW's, but they work their asses off to be at this weight. If Cotto was to work his ass off like both of these guys, he would have big advantages at JWW. Both PWill & Marg are known for their superb conditioning, it's not a coincedence that they have advantages over most other opponents. I give props to both for their true dedication, to coming in at their absolute best.
well it nothing personally
only business.
gaining profit.
Why didnt Arum try to make Paul Williams vs Margarito rematch?
Because he saw more money on a fight between Margarito vs Cotto. Arum has always put 2 stars on the same card in "tuneup fights" to build up the hype for the fight(it didn't need the hype for this fight). If Arum thought that Margarito wasn't that good, he would've never put him in against Cintron. Cintron was a very dangerous opponent, but Arum felt confident in Margarito's ability to win and set up a mega fight with Cotto.
This fight makes the most sense for Oscar's "swan song". Fighting another Mexican from the same area in Dodger stadium in front of a sellout crowd. I think Tony would were down Oscar and maybe stop him late. I would definately watch this fight if it was to happen.
I can't believe these so called analysis that Cotto wasn't being hurt by Margarito's body shots, unbelievable. I guess Margarito had no say so as to who was going to dictate the pace of this fight. Cotto had no choice but to try to match Margarito's workrate to get him off. Cotto will not beat Margarito in a rematch because although he can try to improve on his cardio, he won't be able to stop Margarito from walking through him and taking what he wants. This fight broke down Cotto physically, as well as mentally.
I agree with everybody in here, this should be a very entertaining fight. The first couple of rounds will determine how Diaz attacks Katsidis, if he takes his punch well, Diaz should have a UD dec or even a late rd stoppage. I think Diaz gave Nate too much respect which effected his style of fight. I don't think Diaz will make that mistake again, unless he gets hurt. I also like both of these guys, but I think Diaz has a little more on the skill side and will pull it off.
Why does anyone care about red or green k?
LOL its not money. What does it do?
Well.........If you need someone on this site to give you props for you to feel good then I guess its importnt.
I agree, who cares about Red or Green K's. I'm here to talk about one of my favorite sports, everybody has opinions, that's what makes this sport so cool. I don't bad mouth people in here, but if I step on somebodies toes for speaking my opinion, oh well, they'll get over it.
I think Linares has the potential to stay undefeated the longest, this kid IMHO has all the tools to stay there. Not disrespecting Pavlik or Calzaghe, as I think very highly of both. JuanMa, is also way up there in my book. I think JCC Jr., is way overrated, he should've lost his last fight. Once he steps up in comp, I think he's going to lose, he has 1 draw right now.
Tua, you set up a very hard poll, I was torn between Monzon, the original Sugar Ray, & Hagler. I took Hagler, by a hair over Monzon though. Very good poll.
Why would he want to go up in weight when he has alot of options at WW? He still has a few big fights left at WW before he thinks of going up in weight. He's 7-0 against guys shorter than him, why would he give up that advantage?
He looked awesome against DeLeon, very impressive. I think if he was to fight Rafa next and won, he could set himself up for a big fight against Izzy. He definately has the tools to clean out the division.
How can you say, that Margarito wasn't hitting hard? Margarito hurt him in the 2nd rd with a bodyshot, then broke his nose with an uppercut, and finally cut his eye, all in the same rd. True, Cotto was landing some extremely hard clean punches, but he was also taking some hard bodyshots. An accumillation of bodyshots will take the legs out of just about any fighter. And I think that's what happened.
All of these had more than just a great chin, but their chins helped them a great deal on quite a few of their wins.
Salvador Sanchez
Azumah Nelson
Ray Mancini
Antonio Margarito
Evander Holyfield
Ricardo Lopez
The loss to Cotto, I think took alot out of Zab. Clottey is going to be in his face, plus Clottey has the chin to walk through Zab's power punches. I see this one a UD for Clottey, maybe even a late stoppage.
P Will @ 147 or Martinez @ 154 are the biggest fights for Mayweather, besides Pac. Bradley @ 140 or 147 could also be a good one, depending on how he does in tonights fight @ 147. Anything less is dissapointing.
For the sake of all things good in this world, I hope John Duddy KO's Chavez!! Fuuck the WBC and Jose Sulaimen!
I agree with you, Chavez Jr. hasn't done shit to even be considered a top 10 fighter, much less the #1 contender. I hope Sergio stays at 154, so that IF Jr. wins, he has to fight Sergio if he wants the WBC title.
Good list, but I'd swap Salvador Sanchez with Wilfredo Gomez. Remember, Sal made Wilfredo quit in his corner, he totally dominated him. I know that Wilfredo went up in weight, but Sal was the better fighter.
