I'n welter Margarito and Clottey both were striped to prevent unification in their fights with Cotto.
Also in Japan the IBF doesn't count as a major title. Only WBC and WBA.
The question should be:
Why we don't criticize Margarito for wanting an old and past his prime Oscar?
For the same reason:
Why we criticize Calzaghe for fighting an old and past his prime Roy?
Why we criticize Oscar for fighting a little guy in Pacquiao?
I understand that he can be pissed that Oscar doesn't fight him when Oscar said that he would like to fight the winner of Cotto/Margo but Money is what rules the world, not legacy.
Also, I remember that before the Cotto/Margarito fight, I read here that the next fight for Cotto if he would have won was going to be Clottey and provably in Puerto Rico so something was already going on.
Sorry for my english.
I think the body shots especially made difficult for him but of course the nose and having to move more than he usually does affected him.
I also think that the problem for Cotto was mentally. Land those clean shots to Margarito and not hurting him must fatigue you mentally. Every fighter he has faced had been hurt when he landed one of that punches and I think that he not expected that.
Also think about the pressure of the crowd against him.
Why he wanted to fight with 8oz. gloves if he was going to be the boxer? And why fight in Vegas and not NY if he was the star? It's pretty rare that in the biggest fight of his career he took all those edges away.
Pacquiao doesn't like to lose. And when he does, he comes back 10 times stronger.
Now I know why he destroyed David Diaz. It was because he lost to JMM.
WHY DO PEOPLE NEVER ANSWER THE DIRECT QUESTION GIVEN TO THEM, INSTEAD THEY RANT...!!
You still didnt answer the question
Why does Cotto always fights for vacant belts, and never fights the champions
for those belts?
Because it's less dangerous. It's low risk big reward.
Casual fans only look to the poster and see that he's a champion and don't try to explain to them all this thing that he doesn't have a win over a current champion.
He has a big promoter that puts him in good position in the rankings to get fights for vacant titles.
I'm a boxing fan only for about a year. And I downloaded a few fights of him because there was a lot of talk about him. I became a fan of Cotto. But now I'm a bit more knowledgeable and get the point of that post where you talked of Duran. I think he has all to be a great fighter. Maybe the greatest puertorican of all time. And I think that he is wasting all that talent.
I'm still a Cotto fan and think that if he win the rematch with Margarito, that is gonna believe in himself more than ever and will look only for the best.
Question like: Why does Cotto all of a sudden want to fight for the WBO belt now that Williams vacant it, Knowing all along Williams was really to fight him.
No Matter what you say. Cotto has not validated himself as a great fighter.
he has made a name for himself as a good fighter on the cusp of greatness.
but he has not validated himself as a great fighter.
THIS IS THE PROBLEM
he is still trying to make a name for himself instead of validate himself.
Even if I don't post to much, I spend my day here. And I have to admit to you that i disagree with a lot of your posts. But I'm giving you all the credit in this one. Maybe it's because it's Cotto and I take it more serious because he is my favorite fighter.
Imagine what a statement it would be for Cotto if having lost to Margarito he had told everyone that he only wants to fight Williams. That is the fight that, in my eyes, would solidify his name. Be the only one that can say that he isn't afraid of the guys that nobody wants to fight.
Maybe he needs to get some time to rest and think about all. He has been very active, fighting 4 fight every year since 2004. What do you thing about that warp?
If the rematch hapens I still go with Mijares.
and Cotto has always fought with 8oz gloves so why should he switch to some unknown aspect in the most important fight of his career to date?
Because I think it would favor him. Margarito can take anything from him with the small gloves but Cotto would take less punishment with the big ones.
I repeat that I have never put a pair of gloves on my hands so maybe I'm overestimating this point.
If there's anyone here who fight, could you explain if the gloves size make such the difference that I think?
so basically you are asking Cotto, who mind you wanted the 8oz gloves in the first place or lest we forget, to wear a glove size 1. he doesnt want to 2. has had very limited or no experience using in what will be his most important fight of his career?
I see jumping at straws is almost an Olympic sport with you
I know that he ALLWAYS wants the small Cleto Reyes gloves and with that wrap around the wrist very high so the glove has more pressure.
It could be bad for him because he has no experience and could limit his speed. I agree COMPLETELY with you.
I could not explain better because I don't know english very well. What I'm trying to say is that this could be a bigger handicap for Tony more than for him based on their styles. You as a fan of Tony don't think that too?
You don't see my point?
You guys are describing only technical aspects for a better gameplan. But there are another factors that I think are important.
If the rematch is in Las Vegas with all the mexicans Margarito have a lot of support. If it's in MSG, with all the puertoricans, Cotto may be to brave but if he is intelligent the public will help him.
Also, what I don't understand is the gloves choice. I have never boxed but the 10 oz. are bigger so you can defend better with them and they hurt less. This is another advantage for Cotto because it would be more difficult to Margarito to wear him down.
Calderon is the champ and should fight Archie Solis, the number 1 contender, but neither of these guys seem 100% interested in fighting each other.
During the Solis-Donaire fight the guys at Azteca TV said that the one who doesn't want the fight is Bob Arum.
I understand that either one doesn't want to go to the country of the other to fight there, so the perfect thing would be to put the fight on the undercard of Margarito-Cotto II.
I'll take PAC over Chiquita and Zaragoza
Toney was done when he went to Roach. And I find Roach the kind of trainer that can develop a brawler but he can't create a pure boxer.
For me Nazim Richardson is very underrated. He never gets any credit for what B-Hop has acomplished late in his career. For me he give's the best instructions in betwen rounds.
Uhm dude i'm not exactly sure if this is the one, but i got the first page with the word 'cotto' on it
http://www.primerahora.com/noticia/boxeo/accion_deportiva/ultimatum_a_miguel/251195
do your best.
It says exactly the same as the one posted here by BPP.
like i say..IS THERE SOMEONE WHO KNOWS HOW MANY FIGHTS DOES COTTO HAVE UNDER HIS CONTRACT WITH TOPRANK :boxing:
This interview was made before his fight with Randall Bailey (12/2004)
Read here (it's in spanish) http://espndeportes.espn.go.com/news/story?id=284889
The important question of the interview:
Another of the rumors that have been running is that Oscar de la Hoya is trying to sign you ...
I signed an extension of my contract with Top Rank, so I do not think that this might come about. My contract runs until 2008, and by then it is posible I retire.
