Exactly! Lets use common sense: If I know I am going into a situation where the conditions encourage grappling, and where my competitors practice grappling, it would be foolish not to adapt my situation accordingly... regardless of the art. And yes karate has a built in strategy of not attacking from a distance, it is a fundamental part of the art. In Okinawan Te most of the actual techniques involve grappling while hitting. Lol, used to drive me nuts! I was taught to grab the Gi when throwing a reverse punch, to control the person... I would get disqualified every tourney but did not want to alter muscle memory.
Yes you and I both have had experience with others claiming to teach and teaching crap... It is very sad. The fighter always makes the art and the reason the art evolves is because of how those in combat have succesfully used it.
