I was surprised that it was stopped initially but watching it again Taylor was basically out of it and took a terrible beating. Steele did the right thing.

Not quite true Chavez was putting money in the bank with body shots and was making the fight closer as the fight wore on and I have no doubt if the fight was a 15 rounder he would have stopped Taylor.

Taylor should have ran in the 12th round but he was too much of warrior for that and that probably contributed to his early decline as a fighter as after this war he was basically shot.

He was able to win the WBA welterweight title but he never looked the same and was annihilated by Terry Norris and Espana.

His state these days is beyond sad.

I actually started fight tape trading/buying because I couldn't watch this live. I remember the media went nuts on Richard Steele but he did the right call it was no different than Nady stopping the Tszyu vs Judah unification fight and Judah doing the funky chicken dance and falling down twice against Tszyu.

I havent watched it since it happened, all I remember it was real good fight and Taylor had it won, dont matter who wins over 15, or who wins a running race in the car park, it was what it was Taylor was very unlucky to have lost the fight.

Chavez is by far the better fighter just he had this one lost if a miracle didnt happen, it did.

Well, if Steele would have left the fight finish and Taylor would have gotten the decision, it's pretty clear that Taylor lost the fight. He was forever changed.

Yeah true he got damaged, so did Chavez just a different level of fighter, they say a guy only has one to the wire battle in him, well that was Taylors.

Yep. Horrible stoppage in that first Ruddock/Tyson fight. Tyson said in his biography that king told him once that he had the refs in his pockets. He never said who, but he had to be talking about Steele.
