Probably the worst stoppage Ive ever seen in a championship fight.
Finally watched Meldrick Taylor vs Chavez

Cool story. Not reality though. You should watch the ending a little more carefully... Taylor was holding onto the ropes the whole time during Steele's count. He was absolutely in no condition to continue. By the way, Steele waved the fight off with 4 to 5 seconds left which was plenty of time for Chavez to landed a coma-inducing shot on a defenseless Taylor. Taylor took a ton of clean single shots all night even though he outworked and outlanded Chavez for most of the fight.Comment

One more shot could have had life altering results. The main job of the referee is to protect the fighter and that's what Steele did.Comment

Whenever I see someone say this about that fight I can show how much BS that is. When Steele was the ref for Hearns-Barkley he allowed that fight to go on with Hearns in much worse shape than Taylor. Watch from 10:38 of the video
This wasn't about protecting Taylor. He never made Chavez stay in a neutral corner and he never had Taylor walk to him like most refs do in those situations.Steele was protecting the Don King fighter. Nothing more to it.Last edited by joseph5620; 01-29-2021, 10:45 PM.Comment

Chavez couldn’t make it across the ring that fast unless he grew a pair of wings. Stop it.To add, watch the 12th round of Mosley Mayorga. The same exact scenario happened. People saying Taylor should have been allowed to continue don’t believe Chavez could have hit him again. Now back to Mosley Mayorga. The ref allowed Mayorga to continue with five seconds left. Mosley landed a knockout blow get the ko. Chavez would have seriously hurt Taylor more than he already had.Comment

Disagree, the punishment he took the remainder of his career wasn't on top of the punishment he had already taken that night. Fighters don't start a new fight in exactly the same physical shape that they were in at the exact moment their previous fight ended.Comment
