Did GGG beat better MIDDLEWEIGHTS than B-Hop.

All of those fights all were seen as controversial here when they happened and I see why even if I didn't always agree.Comment

Yep and he lost to Taylor twice at the end of his MW run.I respect Hopkins as an individual and for his longevity and accomplishments as much as any fighter in history, dude is a true legend. Obviously overall his career is far greater than Golovkins given all he went on to achieve at LHW but taken just as MWs there really ain't a great deal in it.Comment

Good breakdown.None of Hopkins best wins ever did anything much at all at 160 though, which I think is the point the TS is trying to make. JDJ was a fantastic JMW but never really did anything great at 160 - maybe Jacobs or Derevyanchenko level at best, similarly with Glen Johnson who only had a handful of fights at 160 in his early years and beat no-one of note despite his notable successes (and losses) at higher weights. Keith Holmes was a decent fighter who managed a coupla defenses before losing to Hopkins but nowhere close to any kind of legend, Eastman of a similar level to the likes of Macklin or Murray. Joppy, decent but again no better than Jacobs at best I'd say.
I'm still inclined to put Hopkins slightly ahead cos he's got some names that accomplished much in other divisions even if they never made waves at MW (where they were mostly at the tail ends or the very beginnings of their careers), but just comparing MW accomplishments of their opponents and there really ain't much to pick.Comment

Curt I have great respect for Hopkins. I don't like his fighting style but he was a winner and strong minded. What he achieved is amazing during his boxing career and after it. He deserves to be in the HOF He is a fighter and comparisons to other fighters are part of it. If fighters are being compared there is no other way but to look at who they fought versus the guy that are being compared to. its not simple its not easy but it is what it is. So please explain to me how they are to be compared. Floyd, Leonard, Duran, SRR, Willie Pep, Marciano etc, get compared to other fighters every day on boxing forums. Hopkins is no different. Both guys share a record for title defenses last time I checked. Both guys have one loss at Middleweight. Comparisons are inevitable. I said Golovkin has a great chance to beat Hopkins. He is tough, he has a great jab, solid boxing fundamentals, never been dropped and he hits hard. He has all the tools to have a reasonable chance to beat Hopkins. Claiming anything else is not realistic.heres the thing with b-hop and golovkin...
too many want to try to tie golovkin to hopkins...because of hopkins standing and stature in the sport...
if hopkins stopped fighting after his MW reign he wouldnt be a legend and his resume could/would be picked apart...its what hopkins accomplished and tried to accomplish after MW that makes him the legend he is....combined with his lil MW run
golovkin fans are desperate to paint golovkin in the same light by comparing MW reigns.....its not that simple or easy and doesnt work that way at all
hopkins isnt a legend of his MW resume alone.....dont forget that gggroupiesLast edited by TonyGe; 04-24-2020, 07:48 PM.Comment

The Taylor fights are a stain on his career. Taylor was raw with so many flaws to exploit, and Hopkins did almost nothing in there. If we are talking level of competition fought...it's probably close...with BHop a slight edge at the higher end...fighting a prime RJJ even in clear defeat gives him a good lead, and then JDD and (undefeated) Glen Johnson, along with Taylor twice and ODLH and Trinidad as well.
But GGG's level of competition being a little more solid on an average basis...BHop has 7 fights vs Segundo Mercado, Robert Allen, and Antwun Echols...hate on GGG if you want, but at least he dominated any guy that level or a bit above and never had rematches with them.
BHop's level of competition post 160 is about as good for 15 fights as any I've seen though...but at 160, GGG's is bit better or at least more consistent.
Just as far as wins go...let's look at top 4 wins...GGG has Jacobs Derevy Murray and let's say Brook or Lemieux as his top 4 probably...BHop has ODLH, Trindiad, Glen, and JDD...Bhop better name value but ODLH and Trinidad are not real MWs either...I'd say those 4 fights/wins for each are similar enough...BHop did stop all 4 though while GGG just stopped 2 of those 4.
I listed top 4 wins for each though because Idk who would be BHop's fifth best win at 160 lol...GGG would have Brook, Monroe, Geale, Macklin in his next crop...I just think GGG's level of comp., fight in fight out, was better than BHop's at 160...BHop kind of coasted in there between the beginning and end of his 25 fights or so at MW...and GGG sure as hell wasn't going 12 rounds with guys like Echols and Vanderpool and Simon Brown and Howard Eastman.Comment

So we're counting some fighters who fought below the middleweight limit as "real middleweights", but an undefeated three weight division (154lbs unified) champion coming off a devastating win over a respected middleweight champion and competing for all the titles at the middleweight division is not good enough to be considered a real middleweight?
I get it, Hopkins' biggest win at 160 is not a career middleweight, but that smallish middleweight was a better middleweight than most of GGGs title defenses.Comment

Yeah BHop had some bizarre performances in his career imo...I struggle with how to rate him sometimes...for such a smart fighter, those 2 fights are perplexing to me, even nowComment

But at the same time...who did Tito beat at 160...he beat William Joppy and Mayorga...so saying he is a better win there than Jacobs or Derevy or even a couple others for GGG...I mean that is a fair opinion, but it is just that...an opinion. So we're counting some fighters who fought below the middleweight limit as "real middleweights", but an undefeated three weight division (154lbs unified) champion coming off a devastating win over a respected middleweight champion and competing for all the titles at the middleweight division is not good enough to be considered a real middleweight?
