Irrelevant many champions have ducked mandatories the mandatories don't get awarded title defences. Golovkins defences are fake.

I've read several accounts of this story. Sturm and the WBA were either both ripped off by some German con man acting as an intermediary, or the WBA did get the money, but as it was a shady deal, no records exist of it being paid.

The point is, they pulled the super title out of nowhere because they were offered money to do it, and denied GGG a chance to fight for it for the same reason.

Golovkin won the WBA MW title - the same title held by Hagler - and he earned the right to fight for it by becoming the WBA No1 contender and staying in that spot for 2 years, then winning the interim title.

Of course his record of title defences will have an asterisk next to it, but it's still as legit as it could possibly be, given the fukked up state of the corrupt era he is fighting in.

No, he wasn't "elevated" to anything by the WBA.

He won the interim title, then the actual title was declared vacant when Sturm was elevated to super champion.

GGG then fought for the vacant title against Tapia and KO'd him in 3.
