Comments Thread For: Golovkin, Hopkins, Monzon: The Record at Middleweight

By Cliff Rold - This Saturday, middleweight Gennady Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KO) will attempt the 20thdefense of the WBA middleweight belt he has held since a 2010 victory over Milton Nunez. In the years since, he's added WBC and IBF belts with wins over Marco Antonio Rubio and David Lemieux. With a victory over 2004 US Olympian Vanes Martirosyan (36-3-1, 21 KO), he would tie Bernard Hopkins for the most consecutive title defenses of all time at 160 lbs...

I’m just gonna day this....if your type of person that recognises Manny as a 8 division champion you must recognise All of golovkin 19 defences so far.... personally I don’t, interim titles, ibo, wbf don’t mean ****....
And I just used manny as an example, he could have been a 8 division champ, IMO he would have beatin at least one of the champs in those divisions but he didn’t so hes not

They might fool the casuals, but boxing fans know many of Golovkins defences shouldn't/don't count. He's a media created hype job.

As for Hopkins and I'm sure everyone remembers Howard Eastman a name that will go down in boxing history... he had such credible title "defenses" does anyone really imagine GGG or
hopkins would have had a chance vs Robinson??? I saw Robinson it would have been no contest for both of them... it's about quality of opposition and different generations neither of these 2 guys would have beaten Monzon...

" For those who find the WBA title situations (hardly isolated to middleweight) absurd, and there are plenty, Golovkin’s 20 would ring hollow ".....
          I am one of those.....

and the reason why is because the following statement is wrong

" Golovkin would have defended something 20 times and that would be good enough "
" something " is not good enough

the IBO intercontinental champ is defending " something " lol

              hopkins 20
              Monzon 14
              Hagler 12
              Sturm 12 (?wtf really)
              Abe 11
              GGG 8
              Martinez 7

GGG is climbing, but long way to go to get to hop.

the issue here is that the other guy is hopkins, not eastman.

There is absoutely no issue with a world champion defending against the middleweight the european middleweight champions, stop messing around.

Unless you think muhammad ali was a soft touch for facing cooper. if u do, then you are a fool of the highest order.

This whole article is an excuse to say GGG's title defenses are legit and he does have 19 defenses. The article comes to this conclusion by brushing over the only fact that matters and that is several of GGG's defenses are interim defenses when the WBA's true champion was Sturm.

The author of the article excuses this by saying that because some fighters avoided GGG then his number of defenses are 19. I wonder what this author has to say now that it is GGG avoided and ducking contenders.

BTW Martinez did not avoid or duck GGG. Martinez was already on his way out and in his late 30's when GGG started to become a force at MW.
