Comments Thread For: Loeffler: We Expect Canelo To Defend Against Golovkin

Well I'll agree to disagree. Canelo has another big PPV event, fighting Amir Khan on Cinco De Mayo weekend in the new MGM Grand! GGG is fighting Dominic Wade. 'Nuff said.I'm not gonna break that down, but Cotto didn't KO Geale faster than GGG. Not to mention Cotto drained him.
Yes! And no! I agree with K2, a CW fight can happen, but not for 3 of the four major 160 titles. No one should get a shot at unification of an entire division, damn near, at no one pound above the weight class below.
Here is another reason why. Canelo comes in too heavy. The money may be good, but if you lose because your weig hit drained, then you lose out in long run.
Stay strong, eventually Canelo will have to come to GGG.
The purse split isn't gonna favor you.Comment

GGG and K2 have no leverage. If they wanted the belt so bad they wouldn't have agreed to step aside money from Cotto and to allow Canelo to have a tune up fight. The fact that Canelo is fighting Khan at 155 tells you all you need to know. If the fight with GGG was going to happen at 160 Canelo current fight would be at that weight.
GGG wants the belt but more importantly the pay day that a Canelo fight will bring. GGG is entering his mid thirties and this may be his last chance at a big money fight. Canelo will take the fight on his terms only, if GGG doesn't want it that way he can strip Canelo and pick up the belt from another nobody. Floyd fought at Oscar's preffered weight, Canelo fought at Floyd's catchweight, and Hopkins fought at Oscars preferred weight.
If GGG really is that much better than Canelo than he should truly embarrass him and beat him at his own game.Comment

You're putting too much weight on that "mando." This is prize fighting, and if you didn't know, let me help you out, the prize is green, but it's not a damn belt!Floyd would be around 150 on fight night, and GGG has no leverage with him at all. Neither did BHop with Oscar.
Canelo would be over 170, and GGG does have leverage there - his mando position.
You don't think that would make a difference to Golovkin's thinking on those 2 possible match-ups?Comment

Honestly if I was K2/GGG I would push for 160lbs and if Canelo refused I would have him stripped and have him hand over the WBC belt. Then I would focus on the last belt which is owned by BJS. The faster GGG unifies the division the better it will be for him in the long run as all roads would lead to him.
I do however have to say that Canelo has been a true warrior and has yet to back out of a challenge; I really like and respect this about Canelo. I wouldn't be surprised if he does fight GGG at 160lbs and they end up splitting the purse 65/35 in favor of Canelo. Even if Canelo loses he won't lose stock as he is very young and has already accomplished quite a bit so he would have plenty to do after the GGG fight.Comment

ggg lara should have been ggg's first ppv not lemule...now they ruined his star possibly..lara was a more asked for fight..no matter wat it would have done u have to agree that they went away from demand in order to chase a worthless title that lemule had...and yes i called the title worthless..GGG is the champ of that division and until u beat him u are worthless..simple as that to me..i dont need a strap to validate boxingFloyd was a polarizing figure because he knew that'd make him the most $$$. So he relishes it. Canelo's a clean cut kid. Canelo's also shown himself to be a risk taker while Floyd was the ultimate risk manager. Floyd's greatness surely contributed to that perception in that he made it look too easy against a lot of good comp. Even his biggest critics know this deep down inside.
I get that the Wade fight is a letdown even if it's a necessity. I'm frustrated that he's not getting in the ring until late April. I'm sure they would've liked to have him fight by March. But the two other "champs" didn't step up. Now, if GGG were five or six years younger, there wouldn't be a sense of urgency. I think they are looking at unification and $$$ right now over legacy. But at this late in the game, it will have to change soon. Though there's no reason to think GGG doesn't have at least a few years left at his current level.
As for Lara, I'd like to see it happen for the day-after entertainment value on this forum alone. But Lara's been getting over $1mil to fight pretty low level guys even though he isn't a draw. He's getting paid money from the fund. That's what GGG makes for a fight on HBO. You think he'll accept less to fight GGG? Of all the revenue generated by a Lara/GGG bout, what percentage do you think will be because of Lara? Where's the money going to be coming from? If Lara really wants GGG, he should step up and fight Jacobs - both Haymon guys so t's an easy fight to make. A win over Jacobs would give him a presence at 160, the WBA MW belt under GGG and some momentum with fans. Outside of hardcore fans who like his particular style, he has no buzz right now. Unfortunately, I don't see Lara calling out Jacobs at the moment. Why is that? There are real reasons this fight's not happening and it has nothing to do with GGG and his team.Comment

And in every instance, the smaller fighter was the cash cow, and in every instance the bigger guy accepted the challenge and got paid! And in B-Hop's instance, he dropped the weight AND dropped Oscar! This is what champions do! GGG wouldn't be the first and he won't be the last. On another note, salute to Amir Khan, an instance where the smaller guy comes up to get a crack at the Golden Boy. Maybe GGG will do that, move up for a big fight? Oh I forgot, he already let that go too!Comment

GGG shouldn't run away from fighting Canelo at 155, it's the biggest purse he can get in the sport right now.Comment

Belts = money.
That's why Canelo is trying so hard to hang on to his.
Losing a fight and 3 championship belts with it = losing money.
That's why GGG isn't going to drain himself down to 155 for Canelo.Comment

If they strip Canelo, what does that do for GGG's legacy and his pockets? So you think it's OK to say "I'm the best, I beat Lemieux, Wade, and Billy Joe Saunders!" If I'm GGG, I would rather say "I'm the best, I beat Canelo, Lara, and Andre Ward!" That's just me! The man is 34, time is not on his side.Honestly if I was K2/GGG I would push for 160lbs and if Canelo refused I would have him stripped and have him hand over the WBC belt. Then I would focus on the last belt which is owned by BJS. The faster GGG unifies the division the better it will be for him in the long run as all roads would lead to him.
