Is Roy Jones in the top 20 all time great?

I think this is a little unfair. Roy wasn't all mouth, because he actually went up to HW and fought Ruiz. According to his long time trainer Alton Merkerson, Roy kept his Ruiz physique, in the hope of fighting at HW again.

No, it's what he always used to do: claim he was going to fight so-and-so and then end up fighting some unheralded mandatory. Did the same thing when he stated he was going to fight Jirov and then ended up fighting Clinton Woods in a fight even his own network publicly trashed.

I love roy jones,, one of my favorite fighters to watch, but alot of smoke in mirrors in his career,,,
Never really took big challenges unless absolutely had to...

G-man, benn, eubanks for a MW title,, Nah, i will fight for a vacant on an undercard vs a tuesday night fights fighter club fighter hopkins at the time

Then defended vs no one,,,,

Finally took a big fight vs toney,, won, but then defended vs no one,, the division had benn, eubanks, nunn, watson, collins, G-man, liles, all champs but roy fought byrd, vinny paz, lucas, etc

Then went to lhw and beat a bunch of weak fighters and champs like ancient mccallum, old hill, old reggie, frazier, etc

Then when his lucrative HBO contract expired, he was forced to take big fights again so it was Ruiz at heavy, ruiz was horrible,,, and then no big fights vs tyson, jirov, toney, holyfield, lewis,,, but goes back down to fight tarver, and tarver owns him

Thats basically jones' career,,, He had fat crazy toney as his best win, then nothing for a decade in terms of meaningful fights...........................



I love how everyone says GGG, serg, ward etc they dont fight anyone but bums, etc,,, yet these same motherf#ckrs think roy is top 20 ATG and he did the same thing but worse..........

Didn't vote in the poll because the "Not even close" is an extremely ****** option for this.

Yeah. I didn't like that 3rd option either but chose it as I don't think he's close to being a TOP 20. RJJ isn't in the TOP 10 among MW and LH let alone all divisions.

Roy is a strange thing, he doesn't have the storied career of many greats, having only a couple really notable matchups against great fighters. Bernard Hopkins, and James Toney. Neither of them were competitive fights.

I personally think Roy in his prime was unbeatable. Too fast, too smart, too elusive.

not roy's fault that toney was headed into oblivion for a decade, but that win does not make you a top 20 ATG....
