Most people here must be too young to remember Roy in his prime, or just haters.

First of lets get this straight, after the Ruiz fight roy dropped something like 20 pounds of raw muscle to make 175, at the age of 36, he looked pale and tried.
Look at fighters like Dawson and Canelo when the have to fight 4 pounds lighter, Canelo looked like he was close to dying at the weigh in, and he is 22.

And the only reason why he was the favorit in that fight is because he has made anyone he shared the ring with before hand look ******.

Besides that Roy beat prime Tarver fair and square in there first fight.

Now if we go back to his reign at 160 and 168, have anyone ever seen anyone that fast and powerfull ?, he makes sugar ray look slow IMO and ameteures.
His is the only one i have ever seen that has ability to possition himself so he could nail you with full on powershots, and the apponent being completly unaware were the punch came from.

His only real enemy was his own superiority, he was soo good at beating up his apponents in his day, that after his body started to break down he still belive in himself.

Keep this to yourself. It's like talking to Victor Ortiz, no point in elaborating further. Your logic will be continually shot down

joke? floyd is nowhere near roy's level

floyd has never fought a prime atg only shot versions and he has still struggled many many times in his career, jones dominated everyone he ever fought like never before or after, mayweather has only done that to marquez

mayweather is a hypejob, roy jones is a monster

He will never be ranked in the top 20 because I the bias towards older fighters. He should be top 30. It's a shame he completely fell apart after the Tarver loss. He did beat Tarver though. Just think if he retired after that win he would be considered too 15 most likely.

In reality JCC, Hagler, Arguello, Monzon are not better than Roy to me nor do they have better resumes. But people like to overrate that era so what can you do?

Of course Roy could have beaten 60 scrubs and padded his record like Chavez then maybe he would be considered greater.

Roy may be in the TOP 5 head to head but his resume is not that great. You need to clear out your division. I know it's hard today but until someone takes out ALL the other belt holders its hard to call him an ATG.

Why you ask? Isn't it obvious that Roy would beat "fill-in-the-blank"? Because upsets happen. Styles make fights. In baseball, football, basketball we always see upsets. In baseball you always have exampes of an average hitter "owning" a hall of fame pitcher (or vice-versa). What if the Green Bay Packers did not face the NY Jets in Super Bowl III due to contract issues? We all *know* that Green Bay would have destroyed the Jets. Right?

Ultimately there were too many excellent contemporaries that Roy Jones did not face. This diminishes him in the ATG standing. The same holds true for Floyd Mayweather and anyone else who doesn't clear out their division.

Case in point - who's the best middleweight? Martinez, GGG, Sturm, Quillin? I think most agree that it's between Martinez and GGG but who knows? They have to fight for us to find out.

He beat the best Middleweight of his era in Hopkins and the best Super Middleweight at that time in Toney. The only Light Heavyweight he did not fight was DM and that was all politics.

Hopkins was not the best middleweight when they fought. Hopkins became the best in later years. It wasn't until he beat Trinidad in 2001 or 2002 that he was considered the best middeweight around. Now I agree that RJJ beat the best when he fought Toney. But there were a lot who he didn't fight.

                  Nigel Benn
                  Michel Nunn
                  Chris Eubanks
                  Joe Calzaghe (prime)
                  Herol Graham
                  Michaelacweski

A lot of good arguments can be made that he fought X but not Y or that politics got in the way. I understand that. But still - with all these belt holders not fighting each other it takes away from their ATG ranking when compared to earlier years when the title holder was almost always the undisputed BEST in the division.

I was a big RJJ fan. I'm a big GGG fan. But RJJ not fighting Nunn and Eubanks is not good when you make ATG rankings. If GGG doesn't fight Martinez or Quillin or Sturm it will not look good when comparing GGG to other great fighters.

And that should have been a thread ender. People who haven't watched boxing for very long don't seem to have any idea just how stacked the competition is for those top-20 p4p all-time slots. No knock on Roy, the competition is just that tough.

Didn't vote in the poll because the "Not even close" is an extremely ****** option for this.
