Duran doesn't even seem to know why he quit. It's truly baffling. He was definitely in the fight, otherwise the fact he quit wouldn't be so controversial after all this time. It would be easy to explain if he was losing every round and had no chance. It's still somewhat depressing that so few NSB'ers have actually watched this fight (or Duran/Leonard 1 for that matter) and instead rely on documentaries like this, 'Beyond the Glory', or 'Legendary Nights' to give them their (often biased) dose of boxing history.
Duran was in this fight. I'm not sure why he quit (nor is anybody else), but he was very much live in this fight on the official scorecards prior to doing so.
The only thing that really bothers me about the quit is the fact that it made Duran into something of a punchline among non-boxing fans and your average NSB ****tard who's never even watched more than a few Duran fights, if that. Very few non-boxing fans actually know what a monster this guy was.
I missed this documentary, but I'll be checking it out hopefully soon : Duran is one of those athletes (and boxing has quite a few of them throughout history) that is just ridiculously charismatic and fascinating, regardless of the language barrier.
I wasn't even alive when this fight happened, so I can't speak to the truth of this documentary or any bias it has, but I thought it was pretty good.Comment

Duran was an incredibly slick fighter himself. If you watch Duran operate on the inside, you'll always see him slipping, bobbing and weaving - even the punches that do connect don't have full steam on them, because he was brilliant at rolling with punches. He was a master of anticipating shots, defending against them and coming back with a counter of his own (usually a right uppercut to the body.) His ability to transition from defense to offense is as fluid and as good as you'll ever see from any fighter in history.
Forget about the macho crap and this image of him being this marauding brawler; the dude is one of the most intelligent, well-schooled technicians in the history of boxing. There's a reason this guy was still competing at a world class level long after his legs and his reflexes had left him.Comment

i had to go to bed right as leonard got to panama. i was up at 4:00 this AM, and driving to bean city.
i got it on my DVR, and will surely watch it several times.
what i did see, though, was amazing. amazing. holy guacamole was it good. maybe it's just me being a boxing dork, but i couldn't get over how f#cking amazing that movie was.
i love ray leonard. he's NE top 4 for sure, along with joe frazier, jermain taylor, and micky ward. duran may very well round out the top 5. i would have to hash out my top five favorite fighters, first.

One of my absolute favorite small things to watch a fighter do was how Duran would duck under hooks and come back up with his own punches. The way he would invite that hook, like he was begging his opponent to throw it, love it.Duran was an incredibly slick fighter himself. As I said yesterday I was a kid when I watched this fight live. My best guess-Duran knew he was going to lose and frankly just didn't care since he had won the first one. SOme other things I took away from this documentary which was really good IMO:Duran doesn't even seem to know why he quit. It's truly baffling. He was definitely in the fight, otherwise the fact he quit wouldn't be so controversial after all this time. It would be easy to explain if he was losing every round and had no chance.

-Ray seemed to do this only because he was still mad the headlines read duran quit and not leonard won. The press conference where he reacted so strongly was interesting as well. Such a great fighter has been bitter about the newsheadlines for almost 35 years. QUite telling.
-The money they paid duran to fight in November. he went from $1.5 mil to $8 mil. Thats moretha 500% increase. whenever a poster starts to debate about "competition" and "legacy" over money keep this in mind.
-The sheer happiness in Panama when duran won the first fight.Comment

AH the memorys hahaha
You know what !! They both were in their primes. I didn't like Leonard and wanted him KO'd ! I wasn't a kid , so after having seen the first fight, I thought Duran would get him ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,UNLESS LEONARD RAN !
its amazing to see the perspectives of long ago and today. The only runner I really liked was Cassius CLAY ALI,,,,,,, he fought like H### !! all the while he slipped shots.
Let me point out that Duran Leonard Hearns Benitez Hagler all fought each other in their primes. I don't think Ben fought Hag.
Their legacys will last until its all over in the boxing annuls of time and glory. IT won't be so much about who won, it will be ABOUT that THEY were prime elites and didn't DUCK one another !!!!!!!
May JR had better do something for his legacy, the die hard old boxing fans KNOW BETTER than to be fooled by his antics over the past ten years. JR has AVOIDED ALL THREATS
There is ONE that can revive his LEGACY,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,"""""MAYBE"""""??????
JR needs a rivalry and it should have happened 4 years ago with Pac.
Jr needed it more than Pac.
Pac has done more in boxing than anyone in boxing history even if he gets KO'd in the Rios fight !!!!!!!!!! Personally I think Rios gets KO'd and if he does there will be a revival of lets see Pac vs JR.
Every generation should get to see great rivalry's like the LEONARD DURAN era.
Whens its ALL OVER , its good to see two men let it go embrace and go their ways
They gave us great drama and great fights
we will see one Sat nite , I have the Siberian EXPRESS !!!!!! by KO of courseComment
